The central problem with video games is that the target audience are gullible retards with low expectations, no standards, and bottomless wallets.
These are the people unironically enjoying nuXcom, Fallout: New Vegas, Bioshock, Twilight Princess, Halo 2, and Persona 5.
These are also the people unironically enjoying Farmville, Fallout 4, Bioshock: Infinite, Breath of the Wild, Destiny, and The Last of Us.
So long as there's a huge amount of people who'll unironically buy a matchmaking-based game with paid cosmetics and lootboxes, where you can't make any custom maps and you get banned from the entire game for racism, then such games will be made, and they will be profitable.
You'll have to give people actual good taste before gaming gets better.
The only way to do that is via the slow painful process of waiting for humanity to slowly evolve its intelligence over 30 or so generations until people can tell garbage apart from non-garbage.
Or with genocide. Manually select 100 people who you trust to be the arbiter of good taste, have the lot of you manually select 50,000 people who you believe to have good taste, and then slaughter the rest of humankind and repopulate.

I mean, I agree that part of the problem is that most people will eat up whatever manure producers shovel down their throat if its shiny enough, but I don't think enjoying any specific style of games makes you a shit-taste retard. I myself can't help enjoying cookie clickers, god save me. But I also like exploration games, roguelikes, and any game with solid gameplay mechanics and a decent story.
The only way to save videogames is for enough people to get sick of games being designed for whales that companies can't expect to be supported by the currently hip microtransaction beating a dead horse whaling profit model. Then the way things are will crash and they'll have to find a new way to draw in paying customers, and that will hopefully involve games that focus on being games rather than games that focus on being theme parks. At least as the majority. Nothing wrong with a few games for shit eating retards and each gamer's specific autism.
