I have absolutely no problem with them voicing and playing (mocap) characters. I don't really mind Keanu Reeves, he actually really fits the role. I did slightly raise my eyebrow at Jon Bernthal in whatever that generic shooter was (literally can't remember what it was*), and shook my head slightly at Forest Whitaker in that game that I can't remember either because it was so bland and generic.

* Modern Warfare? It was something where he played a "bad man" leader of a pack of killers/soldiers, and he's out to get you or something, and you shoot a bunch of dudes because even though you were part of them at some point, you can just mow them all down like toddlers in a bouncy castle, and then you'll have some boss fight with Jon Bernthal where you can finally shoot that faggot in the face 15 times before he dies.. I think it's that kind of game, I'm not sure.

Keanu is great, and he fits the role very well. He has genuine experience in Cyberpunk, as an actor. He's perfectly cast. However, the bad part is his likeness. Don't get me wrong, he looks fine, very fine, in fact he looks exactly like Keanu Reeves. In games, you have the ability to make your character look like anything, so that you don't have to star the same actor in 1 new, completely different game (movie) a year. So that's why I also dislike it a little - not only will you subconciously recognise that it's really Keanu Reeves, it's also tied to one actor, and that's bad for future installments. It means that they have to get him back every time, kill the character, or simply pretend that he didn't exist. It's not a real practical problem, but in the long run, not a great business decision.

With how this is selling, I guess they won't need to make any more monetary decisions for the next decade, though, so..

Keanu has been the poster child for Cyberpunk films from the Matrix, William Gibson's Johnny Mnemonic, A Scanner Darkly, and the Replicas, so adding him into Cyberpunk 2077 felt more like CDPR was paying homage to Cyberpunk as a genre and their films.

Have you ever played a James Bond or Mission Impossible video game? I remember near the end of the PS2 and Gamecube cycle EA released a Sean Connery James Bond game of one of the most classic films. I liked it and the graphics were amazing for the hardware used, but nobody cared.

I think celebs were fine when it was quirky and unusual like with Onimusha 3. A European Frenchman in a samurai video game when mocap wasn't even common tech and almost every other character was a pre-existing game character from the franchise. How cool was that? But it was the exception back then, not the norm like today. These days every AAA game has motion capture and actors. So adding big name celebrities behind it is definitely only done to sell through the celeb's name, not to show off tech.

But anyway, on the top of my head LotR BFME2 had you play as almost the entire cast of actors. Same with the Two Towers and RotK on consoles back then. Entirely actors.
