soul is synonymous with nostalgia

I don't see anything soulful about that image

Because big titles had more efforts put into them back in the day than they do now

There wasnt a status quo

the five games are dkc and mario allstars

I carried the game booklet at school with me all 3rd grade and showed off the 3d modeled bestiary so many times I should be shot

>get your hand out of my fucking face you idiot before I throw you over the edge

Because you're a manchild.

Unironically the limitations
>Lower quality sounds to work with meant more care into making music catchier and more memorable
>Lower quality graphics meant that games that took the extra step to develop a "style" are memorable
etc. etc. There's plenty of old games that are shit but a lot of good ones too

Attached: DWpeNYBX0AAYDhb.jpg (1027x1200, 270K)

Smaller development teams, there was a connection between the people who worked on it and your input was valued.

Soul may be a buzzword to some, but you can really tell if a game has "soul" or is "soulless". Actually for a game to have soul someone has to put their soul into it, that is only possible if your actions matter, and obviously it matters more if you are part of a 10 man development team instead of a 1000 man orgy.

>be a dev for rareware in the 90s
>wake up in a cold sweat for the third time that week
>had the gorilla minecart dream again

Has something to do with having something to prove.

>one switch
holy shit they had switches back then???

Because you first experienced them when you still had a soul

>soul: buzzwords, buzzwords, and more buzzwords
>soulless: buzzwords that mean the opposite of the other buzzwords

I agree the original dkc trilogy is fucking great but nostalgia isnt soul.

I remember bringing the DKC1 manual to school and for a week straight me and my friends would look at it during recess and try showing other kids. I am pretty sure we were in grade 2 or 3. I totally forgot about this until you posted it. :(

Okay anons. Who all brought game manuals to school to show friends, use as a form of escapism for a place you hated, or just look at fondly and could wait to play when you got home. I remember taking the manual for ssb melee and wind waker to middle school a lot. Made a couple friends talking about the games.

DKC always fucking sucked you stupid fucking child.

Developers gave a shit. They weren't always trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator to maximize profits.

Soul is inherently something that can't be measured or observed objectively, so when you say something is objectively good because it objectively has soul, it doesn't make any sense. Soul can't objectively exist because you morons can't agree on a single definition for it. And that basically means that the concept of soul is completely subjective.

Attached: weeg.gif (256x244, 459K)

Bad games can still have soul idiot

Funny that the best DKC game is tropical freeze

Fuck off with your retard Twitter speech.

Attached: vwater.png (473x344, 173K)

Time to retire, Shigeru.

Developers had to work with stricter hardware limitations and needed to put in more effort to properly convey things using less sophisticated graphics and sound.

What is it about those old Silicon Graphics images that have so much more soul? Seriously, what is it? Why does it feel better?

Attached: 1527312009734.jpg (1500x1197, 574K)

What a sick burn, implying anyone with this opinion must be the most famous and celebrated game designer of all time.
Does a great job of bolstering your side of the argument.

A lot of modern games have a problem where they want to imitate a feeling of importance, "earned" achievement or merit, or realism and instead of focusing on each moment being as entertaining as possible they will pad it out with "necessary" bullshit. This is at its worst when you are wasting time to do mundane tasks. If you ever feel you're replicating your fucking job in a game something is wrong(walking and exposition disguised as a quest and so on.)

Sometimes the feeling of work before a reward is fitting. This can be fine if the gameplay is suited to it(i.e. gathering materials to build creatively, preparing for a difficult foe) but many games become soulless when they mistake run time for proof of quality. In truth a game has soul when it even a game of modest length can become a timeless classic because the player will constantly replay and enjoy it.

Attached: 1529439332034.jpg (936x1436, 331K)

No, it's the best game ever.

Because you grew up with it. You were a kid at the time and everything felt magical, new, and wonderful. Now you're an adult and everything feels like shit and all the magic is gone.

The soul vs soulless debacle is fucking retarded, and just makes me think less of nostalgiafags. The point they were trying to make is just lost already.

Attached: 1559772097270.jpg (473x587, 57K)

I worried this was true but I've felt the childlike wonder again recently. The trick is that it is much harder to identify games that will give you the feeling and you pretty much have to try many games consistently and hope you luck into it. Compound that with the reduced free time from having a job and the doldrums are very long when you're waiting for the next big hit that appeals to you personally.

Go to bed Miyamoto.

>32 megs
wait what? Many n64 game cartridges weren't even 32megs.

Attached: tom.jpg (500x445, 61K)

We can all agree that Super Mario 64 DS is shit, though, right?
Almost all the personality from the original was deleted for DS. Plus, it doesn't even look as good from a technical standpoint since there's so many blurry textures due to being an early DS game.

imagine
in a decade or so kids will be having the same argument about games coming out now vs. their future rehashes and sequels, some saying the games we shit on now are soulful while others saying its all buzzwords. do you think they'll even look back as far as SNES or the gen after that? we don't talk about coleco vision being soulful, unless its ironic shitposting. these games wont even be on their radars, will they?

Attached: 1536719899556.gif (499x428, 491K)

so?

>soul mines
Literally SOUL.

This was during the bit wars, you had to advertise with numbers, even if the explanation of how you come up with that amount of bits was debatable. Check out the Jaguar saying it was 64bit and it barely could render basic 3d shapes.

Donkey Kong Country games are overrated.

WHat the fffffffffffffffffffffffuck?

they got you lifetime warranty on snes??

A lot of games now a days are trying to recapture that child like wonder we use to have as kids, not realizing that it came from the fact that said games were the front runners of their frontier. They were made from original ideas, hard work, and people dedicated to making the experience something for generations to strive for. Not only do a lot of games just try to piggy back on success, but you now know game limitations and just how much effort a game developer can put into a project, unlike when you were a kid and almost anything could seemingly happen.

because they are completed games for better or worse

Attached: 1561267156293.png (420x420, 248K)

used to bring the DKC 2 manual to kindergarten... JUST...

It's just standard marketing, user. People like bigger numbers for the thing they're buying, even when they can't reasonably understand what it means.

Genesis and SNES are 16-bit. BUT you could buy a Jaguar for 64-bits! Other meaningless jargon to sell you shit is stuff like horsepower.

But yeah, you only need to know that it's a common trick to make people buy your stuff by saying it gives you better things for your money compared to THEIR (not as big) stuff.

I think it has to do with heavy experimenting in the medium. Games have developed at a rapid pace when you really think about it and I think we've reached a bottleneck of ideas that will require some talented individuals to fix it.

Attached: 1549139156931.jpg (1024x768, 117K)

These threads are made by DKC2 fags who are scared Tropical Freeze is going to replace it when it just exists to be a good game

i didn't know that the SNES could hold up to 32mbs of data, and since the n64 came out later and pretty much worked with 3d in all it's games you'd think n64 games would hold up to nearly three times as much data compared to the SNES system that only worked with, for the most part, 2d sidescrollers and games with wirefame-ee vertex graphics at best

Attached: dk donkey kong.png (778x885, 739K)

What are the other 4 games?

OLD GAME GOOD
NEW GAME BAD

Because expectations were lower then and they also had to try harder with the limitations they had.
Objectively wrong.
Games now don't make fun game mechanics. I'll take Jurassic Park: Evolution it's a fun game, but it lacks a lot of the qualities that are now expected from from a city/park builder game and hasn't expanded on new special features that dinos present to the game.

Modern creatives are also downright allergic to flaws, especially in visual design. That might sound silly, of course you want to avoid flaws in your art and design, right? Well, the closer you get to perfection is also the closer you get to predictability imo. People still love classic visuals from the past in a lot of series I've come to notice, and I don't think it's just nostalgia like so many like to claim. That's kind of the hard part about being a creative, you have no way of knowing if all of the "improvements" you develop in your craft will lead to something that an audience actually enjoys more.

Attached: 1552108174078.jpg (2984x3888, 3.7M)

Nobody really talks about the coleco vision and all that shit because when those systems were around, people used them as little distractions. Unless you were an ultra nerd back in the 80s (in which case you were probably gaming on PCs at the time, which are very fondly remembered) you probably didn't play games on Atari for more than 5 minutes and then turn the system off.

When the NES and Super NES came out, they completely changed the playing field, these games were so much fucking bigger, you could actually sit for hours on end playing the same game. That's why those eras are fondly remembered and the Atari era isn't. 20 years from now, people are still going to be fondly talking about NES/SNES games

It's Mario All-Stars, which is Mario 1, 2, 3, and Lost Levels.

>no World

LIES

I played DKC for the first time two years ago, so you're wrong.

Because they actually had to make a semi-decent game for people to buy it.
now they shit on a plate, give it to reviewers and popular "influencers", and it's GOTY.

imagine taking said crap seriously in the first place

Old games had soul because there were limitations to be overcome - struggle builds character.

You can hear the soul.
youtube.com/watch?v=kAbL8NjoRhI

Not OP, and I can agree with you. But in some cases, even if someone didnt play a game it still might have some nostalgia for the time said game was released

SMB3 for the funky tileset, SMW for the even funkier background.

Only one that looks worse to me on U is the last one, and that's only because the foreground doesn't stand out enough from the background.

Hey whoa, both of these look good. They look different, sure. But overall you can't point at these and say there's a problem. I don't like any kind of remake usually because they usually get a lot of shit wrong, but Sakurai actually knows how to do it in a way that feels good. Plus you can still play Melee, I do it all the time. I'd be much more worried about how different games compare to each other over time and not just things getting a rework as an optional buy.

Fuck no it's not. Soul is the overall art direction/sound design of the game which gives off a unique vibe. Gameplay too, but to a lesser extent.

Destiny for example is a modern game with plenty of soul, despite some people not liking it from a gameplay perspective. Same goes for games like Cuphead, Sea of Thieves, and Dark souls.

I remember in high school a teacher smacked one of my classmates upside the head for thinking such stupidity out loud.

sometimes you can have shit taste regardless of how old you are :)

The fact that the DS port is restricted to eight degrees of movement and some of the most retarded button mapping in a 3d platformer makes it shit by default before even looking at the graphical differences.

Try playing the DS game after playing the original 64 title, last time I did that I fucking quit the DS version before even getting the first fucking star, the port is so atrocious in its controls and Mario's excessively gimped movement.

I had no idea there was more to these images than what was on the cards.

Got any more?

I don't understand why they re-designed the castle when they could have just updated the old model.

Also, the soulless Yoshi house looks different because it isn't the same house as Yoshi's home on Dinosaur Island.

Fan painted the cards to extend the art on them.

Cope, soulcuck. No one will take nostalgia-giggled manbabies like you seriously.

Yeah no. The game felt uninspired and rushed with lazy writing/dungeons for the most part after the first arc. It had some nice art direction though I'll give it that.

fucking edgy

Because the developers had love for their creations.
Now game studios are owned by corporations, who hire indoctrinated termites from college who see it as a paycheck to pay the bills.
Since their love is not games, but their brainwashed agenda from college of trannies and niggers, this is what they consider most important for games now.
Shit happens.

look at all the soulfags replying to you, soul is just an all-purpose version of "the zelda cycle"

because you were 8 years old and ignorant of the world

Be glad that the Donkey King Country games still have soul. Tropical Freeze was gorgeous

Going to the soul mines, you guys want anything?

The whole game is made of plastic bro. Nothing soulful about plastic.

A big thing with games of old was that they were still experimenting with "What Worked"

Granted that phrase means different things for different people. It just so happens that for Nintendo, they wanted to know what worked for sales.

They now have a definitive formula for art, game design, etc. What they do now certainly isn't bad, but its proven again and again to work, so there is never going to be radical change like there was in the past.

Because they were made using assembly. Real man program

Peak SOUL coming through.

There was a hard line in the sand when games went from being a fruitful garden industry to a truly market driven industry. Developers and creative teams used to have more say in what they'd consider finished product. You bring investors into the mix and you've removed the potential for further consideration.

You give them an inch and they take every single fucking thing from you and demand more.
I remember in like 2009 we would laugh at the mentally ill freaks on tumblr and be all 'make your own games lolol'. Then some slut got caught out fucking vidya journalist shills for good reviews of her shit content and suddenly these fucking termites didn't make their own games, they took over the gaming studios and got the real devs removed.
Just great timing as corporations like EA was taking over most gaming studios.

Megabits, so 4 MB. Half the size of Mario 64.

No design by committee back then with billions on the line. It's so easy to answer. The more money an industry makes, the less soul. That's why rock and music in general is the way it is now.

Yeah, yeah, yeah "they took over" lmao. "SJWs" can't take over an industry that wasn't already pussified to begin with.

watch out you're summoning the contrarian newfags

I just miss manuals in general. They were packed with flavor text and cool artwork, I would always bust them out to read on the ride home, while anticipating playing it

Soulless

This. 100% this. I miss the N64 days.

Semi-right.
Most actual gaming devs back then were 110% fucking nerds that loved their games, its why they were so good.
It makes it so much easier to be taken over by women and turned to shit.
But the real problem was Human Resources departmens. It happened where I last worked as well before making my own business.
>Be HR department
>Be responsible for the hiring of employees and the discipline of employees including coming up with workplace policies
>Traditionally a department dominated by women
>Suddenly, uni grads now brainwashed with the sjw propaganda enter the workforce
>HR departments an easy way in for women being looked after by other women
>Start enforcing your agendas onto the company through HR, with hiring only fellow termites and creating policies to push your belief system
>Suddenly the company is overran, senior management don't give much of a shit until its too late because it doesn't affect them.
Many such cases. Sad.

I remember when they sat all 300 of us blokes who labour on the front floor down in large group sessions so HR fuckheads could talk to us about the value of diversity and how it will be a focus point 'going forward'. That was 2013 iirc.
I asked her when will HR department become more diverse because they only had 1 guy who was a poofter that used to a walking cane. The death stare I got from the bitch holy hell but I got some good laughs from the lads.

>Why are old games so much more soulful?

Developers were people with a passion working together with office suites trying to get a business going.

Nudevelopers are suites pretending to be artists taking out of place marketing research trying to create a long term product milking you for every cent possible

Old boomer here.

Gaming died with 3D. I would give anything to go back to the arcades in the early 90s. It wasn’t just the games. You can still play them now. It was the scene and the whole culture.

You can never go back.

I personally think it's just things becoming more mainstream. Before, gaming was a thing for kids and mega nerds, and even internet communities were kind of segregated like that. Yea Forums wasn't big at all, and most people posted on forums.

As shit has conglomerated into like 5 social media sites, you get more and more normal people getting into this shit, and the stuff is constantly growing, so naturally they market more towards the mainstream. It's sad, because the mega nerds are now replaced by people who call themselves nerdy because they either play a video game, or like some thing that is dorky, but it's not the same kinds of people.

Like if you look at SGDQ before and now. Before you had people like Blueglass who were charming in their own way, and slowly they got phased out, and now nothing is allowed and the thing is too big to have controversy so you can't have fun with it anymore.

Oh man it was so great hey especially early 90's arcades with the beat em ups and platformers.

What you said is also correct but gaming got popular and very fast yet it still stayed true to itself (pic related) until this decade now, especially from like 2014.
But yeah that has happened to a lot of things, in the media there were once many companies, now its 6 mega corporations. 10 years ago most traffic on the internet was split between several thousands of sites. Now most traffic split to just a handful of websites.

Look at GDQ, now its practically taken over by termites in the guise of forever offended trannies and other mentally ill freaks. Now they ban speed runners if they don't conform 110% to their belief system. Pretty bad stuff. They even had that 'femme fatale' session I saw advertised though I didn't see it. But I think I have only ever seen 1 actual female speed runner at GDQ, so again they reject everyone else but themselves being trannies and their 'allies'.
I like watching speed running especially ones that don't use huge glitches. But man, it gets taken over so fast.

Absolutely correct, soul is this generations version of nostalgia that they changed the word to try and validate it more

Just wondering, how old are you?

Back in the day prerendered 3D shit was considered soulless and new-fangled compared to traditional 2D graphics.
Pretty soon you'll have people saying how soulful Toy Story and Shrek are compared to today's CGI flicks when they were all soulless to begin with

Toy Story has more soul than modern post 2000 trash by a mile.

I’m sick of zoomers pretending that gaming only got popular in the last few years.

Gaming went mainstream since Pong and especially since the Golden Age of Arcade Games in the early 80s.

Evolution’s been getting better tho. They’re trying. That said, the leak that thus far has been 100% accurate across 3-4 games and several dlcs claims a JWE2 in 2021. Ideally they use the first game and what they learned from it make it what its supposed to be.

OLD GOOD
NEW BAD

Pretty sure that "soul" definition is simillar to "gesamtkunstwerk" definition. I mean, look it up.

Attached: 1446190435608.png (211x162, 54K)

Yeah man exactly. I remember in the late 80's, Nintendo, C64 and Amiga was so fucking popular where I lived. When Mortal Kombat arcade came out like 5 years later at our local video store, there was always like a dozen of us around 12 and older teenagers like 17 hanging about playing MK together at the back of this video store.
Great times man.

This guy gets it.
soul/souless may be a meme, but is actually true. Old games feels like art, new games feels like corporation.

Ori is a definition of shit devoid of soul. It got a faux-soul to impress shallow retards.

What do you think of modern games that follow a lot of classic design philosophies like dark souls/sekiro?

Rain World

Didn't this happen to Yahoo before it happened to all the other companies?

Attached: real quote.jpg (850x400, 67K)

Maybe in later years. I remember when they got that woman CEO she was very anti maternity leave etc.

It wasn't a mediocre platformer though and it introduced a lot of new platformer mechanics which were pretty hardcore. I haven't played it since like 1999 but I remember the bee levels where you would navigate from getting shot out of barrel to barrel around those fucking bee's.
Super Mario World is my idea of a mediocre platformer, where as SMB3 was innovative in platformers.

Soul is human creativity.

Old games were very limited technology wise so they couldn't replicate realism very well. This meant that developers had to fill in the blanks with their own mind. They had to come up with their own abstract version of reality that they gave to the player, a piece of themselves

The more technologically advanced video games become the closer to reality they get. Closer to reality means you lose the element of human interpretation.

Attached: soul vs soulless.jpg (1200x1841, 334K)

They're not "more soulful". They're just better.

well it was fucking ambitious for an early DS game.
3D games on DS always amaze me, no matter how bad they are

boy i really hate nintendo fans

Attached: kart_title.jpg (1180x920, 220K)

this stage was shit though

"Soul" came from the technological bottleneck

Even people in outcast circles took sanity for granted in years past. Now that there's almost no effort to contain faggotry on a societal level nerd circles have been hardest hit. Yea Forums is literally one of the only holdouts against it, which I think has a lot to do with its persistence against all the other web 1.0 sites. 95% of the trannies I see in public below the age of 40 are clearly lost dorks that would have liked Star Wars/Trek a bit too much or played Magic but otherwise had a decent enough life not even 10 years ago. A lot of them were pretty cool dudes before they got this mind virus, it's very sad to see how it's all developed. You can watch the old gdq vods and basically see the progression of the true transition happening in real time too, surreal.

This image redpilled me and got me to understand soul

DKC has no soul. The gameplay is terrible and it only sold well because of the graphics

>Pretty soon you'll have people saying how soulful Toy Story and Shrek are compared to today's CGI flicks when they were all soulless to begin with
They are though?

All you faggots claming nostalgia while ignoring new soulful games are retards. Passion-projects from talented people tend to have "soul".

Low tech lets imagination fill in the blanks.

>is terrible
Nah. It's just an average platformer. There's not much special about it beyond the characters , the setting and the graphics but it isn't bad at all. The SNES had some supremely shitty and generic platformers.

Almost all of Melee's stages were uninspired as fuck anyways.

Yeah man absolutely. Even though so many mods of Yea Forums seem against the opinions of normal people, this site and all its boards is one of the few popular free thought bastions left.
I think of gays, trannies and the retarded diversity push as this decades poser trend thats gone on for a bit too long. When I was an adult in the late 90's, the in thing was metal and goths. Nobody gave a shit about lgbt, diversity and all the rest of the inane nonsense of today.
I think today's poser phase really appeals to a lot of the actual incels whose lives only exist online, that became apart of this poser trend. Announcing that you are a tranny became a poser lifestyle choice because lets face it, they look like the absolute weakest beta 'men' imaginable, and their mindset probably was 'if I can't get laid then ill become the girl'.

Sad shit but in the end I couldn't care less about them, I just want things to go back to how they were but too many men willingly gave up their positions of authority in these industries. Then the rest were forced out and the rest is sadly history.
>pic related, a better time that appealed to us normal men that like vidya because normal men were in charge of marketing.

How come you don't see this kinda art anymore?
How come there aren't any games that look like this kinda art?
What gives?

Man Rare was ahead of their time since battletoads.
Its a pity they signed that contract with Nintendo, it was like their team was instantly bent over and buttfucked by Nintendo's nannying and incompetent business management.
I am really surprised that it was Sega that died instead of Nintendo, but Nintendo stumbled onto enough decisions that saved them despite their constant history of terrible business decisions that they still do to this day.

Man that Warrior land game on gameboy was so great, tho about as easy as kirby adventures was unfortunately.

Thoughts?

It's mostly due to inflation.

because the wear between nintendo and sega was really important and videogames grew up thanks to that war. Thank you Sega, thank you Kalinske we will nver forget you!

*the war sorry

I thought they looked amazing at the time, same with Killer Instinct, but a part of it might have just been the mystique of them being on a console that I didn't have. I made the mistake of choosing Genesis for my birthday instead of SNES, based solely on being tricked by the Sonic marketing, so that's what I grew up with.

A lot of the lighting in these old games makes me think that a big part of soul is the use of secondary colors.

>5 game crate
>actually only comes with 2 games (Donkey Kong Country 1 and Mario All Stars)

this looks similar to the bundle my parents got when I was a kid except it was NA and I don't remember a CD coming with it.

Smash Ultimate has SOUL
Smash 4 is SOULLES

Explain this

this is so fucking beautiful

they both soulless you fucking retard the last smash game that truly had soul was fucking brawl

sure is /vp/ in here

>Mario stepping on the gas
>Luigi breaking
Deepest lore.

DK render sprites looks like shit, that miyamoto gook was right

>Smaller development teams, there was a connection between the people who worked on it and your input was valued.

I think this is part of the problem for AAA development. I'm baffled when I read that some AAA teams consist of 1000 people. More people does not equate quality or better products. But the CEOs and management who run the AAA studios have convinced themselves that this is true.

Why do old people always think 'their' toys were better? I swear OP is turning into that one old fuck that thought playing with pebbles was peak soul. I raise you this, fag OP. Your gen's games are soulless, playing in the streets and having no need for consoles or videogames is soul.

Sometimes I feel like older games used colors that felt a bit richer. They seemed to be a bit darker and more intense and I think it creates a certain feel, like capturing those times of day of dawn and dusk. Modern games tend to feel much lighter, all the time.

Attached: 2B574EE2-50A9-4B3C-BDF8-7445140F5488.png (256x224, 13K)

I don't think this is 100% true, but there is some truth to it, yeah.

>Destiny for example is a modern game with plenty of soul
Fuck off, Destiny felt like such a corporate product at every level

Mario Kart 7 and 8 are miles better than 64.

Only thing wrong with this is it's hard to tell that link gets his sword struck out of his hand because ganons sword trail isn't as visible.

Older games were made with a small team lead by one strong lead designer
Most of the team knew each other and worked directly with the lead to produce one defined, clear image of what the game should look and feel like. The integration between a small group allowed a whole team to produce far greater tailored graphics, and more individual director's flair to the project.
The leads would also be knee-deep into coding the games, and creating the core game-play experience themselves, often being also involved in creating the music, the art style
Finally, the technology back then would often be completely scratch built engines for each game, therefore having far more scope on the visual style and unique technical features to give the games a distinct look and feel, as opposed to using an existing game engine as a platform like unreal or unity
It's why many indie games are springing up as modern classics, but AAA games are quickly being forgotten. Undertale, Cave Story, SMB etc all benefited from this type of strong direction
