Yes. We had a thread just last Friday for Metroid in which a few anons went into why they liked her as a character, had a lot of solid reasons.

She has enough, she doesn't say a word in the Prime games but shows personality in her cutscene actions.

Most of the time, I find her fairly meh. Comes across as sorta chilly, but not terrible.

But she's perfect in Samus and Joey. I feel like pulling her out of the spotlight really let them make her into an inspiring paragon of virtue and a good mother.

This. She actually shows more convincing emotion than in Other M, like the cutscenes where she has to kill the bounty hunters in Corruption. But even beyond that, she is just generally cool in a Chief kind of way in those games.

Just do what Iga did and just make a fucking Metroid game. No new features or gimmicks, just 2.5d Super Metroid or 2.5d Fusion. That's it, that's all everyone's been asking for decades at this point, yet they refuse to listen. And no, Samus Returns was not enough. It had "budget title" printed all over it, and that does not cut it. Plus, it was a remake, and what fans want is a new instalment.
That being said, Prime 4 is good enough. It's not a new traditional Metroid, but it could be worse, as in, nothing at all.

I feel like Samus is kind of like Agent 47, in a way. In that she literally doesn't have what anyone could define as a 'life.' When she brings in another bounty, she doesn't go to the bar and order something, she doesn't browse the internet or read the paper; she just kinda gets back on her ship and starts tracking her next target. And because her job is really all she has, she doesn't have many opportunities to relax or even interact with people, which makes giving her a personality beyond that kind of hard.
Hell, her most concrete character trait is 'loves animals' and then it's just simple professionalism and stoicism.

She's a cool 80s action gal with a soft heart at times like many other Japanese characters from the period.

I enjoyed the bits of personality that you got to see in the Prime games where she often seemed to feel sympathy but was also somewhat alien from her upbringing in the little bits of personal thoughts that slipped into her logs.

Nintendo MCs were never about characterisation, all of them are supposed to be vessels for the player and Samus is no exception.

I find Samus to be much more fun, when she act like a rule63 version of Doomguy and is just a silent shell for the player to use, with the occasionnal cute and/or pin-up visuals you get when you beat a game. I guess Samus interractions with IA Adam were okay-ish in Fusion, but even then, it's basic as fuck and bring nothing to the game itself.

I really liked what they did with the Hunters in Metroid Prime 3 tho, especially Rundas. Talking characters in Metroid are fine as long as it's not Samus.
