Beta 1.7.3 was the last good update before the game went to shit but the beta 1.4 drama was when the cracks started appearing.
Everything since has been waiting 18 months for an update that just adds a single minor feature stolen from a mod plus a half dozen retextured blocks

people who say 1.8 because of hunger are retarded. outside of building a hole in the ground there was no actual survival in survival mode. hunger in itself gives purpose to growing crops and keeping animals for food which makes the game more fun. if all you want to do is build then just go to creative mode.

what killed minecraft for me was that the moment the game got big and went mainstream notch stopped developing the game almost entirely so it became stagnant. then when they did add stuff it was stuff we already had in mods that were better in the mods. horses for example in vanilla did not breed better offspring.

It's just an objectively worse game compared to before once it was added. A ton of people lost interest and went to play other games since it was a little more competitive back then, a few actual good games were coming out and communities were more tight knit so if a game slipped up it was over
