Dragon Quest XI
It feels good to have finally finished the game, but does anyone else think it took a huge nosedive in quality after the original final boss? The ending to part two really makes everything before it feel pointless, and part three is basically just a long list of chores. No cutscenes have any impact or matter post time travel and many of the emotion scenes from part two are abridged and dumbed down in part three. Things like your encounter with your father, Erik rescuing Mia, Sylvando seeing his father, etc.. are just so uninteresting in part three even within the context of the scenes. It feels like no one even cares about saving your father in part three and it is fully optional too if I remember correctly.

Every city and town is being attacked or needs help because well who knows and clearly no one in the world is capable of defending themselves. The party and the world itself going through what they did in part two and still fighting made me respect them a lot. All of that development is lost and we are left with the scooby doo version of the party. It ends up lacking any real tension or interesting moments after part two. I couldn't even take the big bad seriously. I don't think anyone really knew what he was or cared. They just stopped him because...he's evil or something. They can "sense" his evil.

I also really hated how much of the game was told through hearsay in general. It was way too easy to keep adding onto the plot whenever convenient. The end of part two establishing a some secret time temple and then IMMEDIATELY leading the party into it to go back in time was so shitty and last minute. The devs knew the game was on the short side so they just came up with the most halfassed way to reuse the areas and narratives to pad out the game. Way to end things with a whimper. All they had to do was make post game let us revive Veronica, but revive Calasmos on accident and have to fight and finish him for good. That was all that was needed.

In the ds version they didn't know what to write for Bianca's party chat I guess so she constantly brings up the haunted house section of the game in her party chats. On top of this the translation gives her an exaggerated country bumpkin accent making players find her annoying.

It's not that, but as with the ds translations the accents are exaggerated. The scripts in the ds versions are real awkward. For example, the final boss talks in this weird font that makes it difficult to understand what he is saying.

VII is my absolute favorite. That being said its a slow as fuck game about job classes that you don't even get for maybe 20-25 hours and the story is all episodic island by island until 40-50 hours in where things start to tie together. It will test your patience many times and its truly the game I think about when people complain about dragon quest. The worst one to start with but you're already playing VI so you should be fine. Its ridiculously long too.

II is only worth playing if you are directly going into III right after. You get to see them have all these genre defining ideas and fucking them all up in II only to go into III and witness a game made by wizards with how expertly designed it all is.

3 really is one of the best RPGs on the NES. Even better than 4 in some ways. Especially chapter 5 of 4.

Every game is more or less self contained. You can start anywhere, but this pic is a nice reference. Red stamp means it's a nice game to start with.

Self-contained but some games make references to each other, the most connected games are 1-2-3, and 4-5-6.

Start at I its only 5-6 hours long. III, IV, V, VII, VIII, IX, and XI are great games. A high majority of the spin off games if not all of them are worth playing.
It solidified nearly every idea that all jrpgs grab from. That on top of being a seriously masterfully designed game in how you progress through it just makes it one of the best games ever made in my opinion.

1,2,3 and 4,5,6 are their own trilogy.
You get more out of 3 if you played one first and 4,5,6 are all very loosely connected, but you'll get some cool nods and easteregss out of playing them in order as well.
All the games from 7 onwards are all stand alone exceot for one of them that ties back to one of the older games in a very cool way, but that is kind of a spoiler.
I'd say start with either IV or VIII.

All correct. Best place to play IV is on phones, you heard that right. DS version lacks party chat which is a huge component to a lot of the games and adds a ton of characterization to your party and just general good conversations.

-dq9 can use the save editor to get all the dlc

the first 3 phone ports are pretty cheap overall imo

I really didn't like XI as much as the other games. I enjoyed playing it and it was a very comfy experience. However, the third act did ruin it for me for similar reasons and I didn't like the really linear overworld that comes with this 3D game (VIII had a bit of it too but it wasn't that bad). I prefer most other DQs over XI.

I dunno why party chat has been shit for VIII and XI. Not only do they not really say much interesting since they usually only repeat the objective, but it's also ass to use.
It leaves a bad impression for people who play those first and then decide its not really worth checking when they play 4,5,6 or 7.

I guess because VIII and XI are more story oriented enough as it is.

The accents made me stop around chapter 3. It's way too thick to be enjoyable. And since DQ is about talking to NPC to having some idea what is next it starts becoming a chore talking to them and at times having to break their sentence down to figure out what they are saying because of how thick the accents got.

It falls off after a while mostly. It's only really bad early game. But hey, skipping one game isn't the end of the world

The games are a lot more cinematic abd your party members are a lot more involved in the plot than any games before them.
If something happens in an event/cutscene chances are your party members will comment on it during the cutscene/event itself.

No egg hatching time, can give armor to monsters in later games besides items, literally any move can be passed down by breeding, basic attacks require no MP, monsters sort of develop their own strategy and use different moves depending on what you tell them to do, they're always 3 vs 3, can know what tier a monster is in it's description, highest rank monsters are obtainable by breeding and not by specific location

Monster attack sprites okay sure but it gains way higher quality of music than the snes version so I also think that's a trade-off worth mentioning. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and desu if you don't speak jp you're in for a lackluster time with that fan translation. They did the best they could but it's no where near the polish of the mobile version.

Better music quality goes for all the mobile versions over DS.

Could not stand doing it in VII though. Characters outside your party don't get job points, there are more classes, battles take longer to finish.
Mastering every normal class in DQ VII could easily take twice as long as mastering every class in DQVI.
Then there are the monster classes. Thought you were done? Guess what, you didn't mastered even 30% of the classes, have fun grinding for another 70 hours.

Deborah is a great pick. She starts off cold but by the end she's progressed a lot and is really great. What I also like about her is that she never becomes meek and submissive, she stays headstrong only now she stands by your side rather than look down on you. It's really nice how she comes to respect the MC as she learns about his life and goes through adventures with him.

I think the games have several instances of anti-piracy measures. I remember VI for example had one straight at the beginning where the prologue at the bonfire get's looped and then a second time, where the second town has no NPCs at all.
But usually, on a good emulator/flash card the anti-piracy is never triggered or some flash cards have an integrated AP patch in the cheat code list you can simply activate.
