When the act breaks, he proceeds to just lie down and cry until he finally realizes that, small-town bumpkin doofus or not, his friends need help, and he can help, despite how afraid he is.

You know how I can tell you clearly don't understand this aspect of a game? Cloud is never technically Zack you moron, he is always himself, he just has his memories all fucked up. He just thinks he was in place of Zack and all, but still as fucking himself. Thus his mannerisms are similar to Zack's (because that's how he behaved) but the emotions and personality is still original Cloud. That's why he is still a cold, distant asshole with giant ego (and clearly Zack was never like that).

Just like his rival, Sephiroth ... Cloud is only ever good in the original, but sucks ass everywhere else. AC ruined both of them and Square Peenix, for some reason, keep AC characterization for both of them, which sucks ass.

Tifa didn't care much for him romantically until later in the game, and at first only kept him around because he acted weird.

Aerith only liked him because he was essentially Zack 2.0, her old lost boyfriend.

Thing that bothers me with Sephiroth and even Aerith is how much their faces look different depending on angle. In one moment he's looking like overgrown baby (Kadaj) and in next one he looks like Satan (original Sephiroth). Then, you have render in which he looks like Aerith in the wig. Same goes for Aerith. None of them looks the same in next shot they get shown. Their looks are way too inconsistent.

Tifa looks inconsistent as well. I think that only Cloud looks somewhat consistent.

Cloud is a fairly normal guy with some memory issues. Not super serious and emo like AC would have you believe. Sephiroth was surprisingly normal behaving too before he went off the deep end. AC just set their precendence because it was flashy and new and easily accessible I guess

That's sort of the point. Cloud is rping what a badass Soldier first class should act like. But since Cloud's only point of reference is Zack he has to guess most of the time. You ever notice how at the beginning of the game you have a laundry list of choices of how Cloud can act in a given situation? You can make him a nice guy or a dick but you as a player have a choice. After Cloud gets his own sense of self back the only choice you have in his behavior is whether or not to kill the Turks. Other than that you're not given choices. Because Cloud is his own person again with his own concrete personality rather than a nebulous one from the start of the game.

I just notice people inject ambiguity into a game that really is never ambiguous. If it tells you X is true, it is rare X will end up not being true, and if X does end up not being true (like Cloud’s past) you are well informed of that fact.

Another one, which really should count as a red flag that there's something really wrong with Tifa and Cloud relationship, is if you take Tifa and or Aeris with you to gongaga Village. If you visit the house of Zack's parents, after they tell you they haven't seen their son in years in that he was in Soldier, both of them will leave. When Cloud inquires why Tifa is so upset Tifa will be adamant that she has never met Zack fair in her life and tells Cloud to drop it. Aeris will mention that Zack fair was the boyfriend that she was talking about, which if you remember she said her first boyfriend was in Soldier first class so Cloud should know him. It's a really great bit that rewards people who played through this game twice and realize how many differences there are between Cloud's account of what happened and actual story of what happened.

Well, maybe. It took her a while to realize Elmyra’s husband died I think. And Zack would have died recently. It’s a dangling thread that is not explained.

The Zack part comes from him basically assimilating Zack's role in the Nibelheim incident in his mind. Thats why even in it, he acts so much different from how he does during the part of the game that you hear it.

Tifa does give a reason for not blowing the whistle immediately on Cloud's messed up story. Initially Cloud's story was so far off from what she remembered that she thought she remembered wrong. After all she did suffer fatal injuries, maybe she got some details wrong overtime. Then somewhere around Cosmo Canyon Tifa is unsure that this person in front of her is even actual Cloud and not some weirdo using his name. Then while she's inside clouds head she mentions that she realized clouds psyche was completely unstable and she was afraid that if she said something he would break entirely. Which is supported when Sephiroth presents Cloud with a half-truth at the northern crater. Cloud says that Zack was the one who was actually there. And Tifa is screaming in the background that Sephiroth is wrong and Cloud's account of Nibelheim was right.

All in all Tifa should have open her mouth. But just like her feelings for Cloud she just can't. Which is probably why her last name is Lockhart. True feelings locked up within her heart? High quality stuff there Square

also take a look at all these Etika threads on Yea Forums right now. Aerith didn't have the benefit of seeing a news story about Zack's ID being found by Shinra police or whatever. All she knew is that he disappeared, not that he died

Tifa is basically gaslightin herself at that point in the game. She doesn't know whats going on with Cloud and whose memories are correct. She can't figure out how Cloud knows things that he shouldn't know for the Nibelheim incident.

Its easy to forget, but she also has missing memories of the incident. SHe doesn't know how she survived, but she may have been cognizant just enough to remember she had indeed seen Cloud did rescue her. She was questioning herself just as much as she was Cloud.
She was also trying to ignore her doubts because she wanted to just accept what Cloud was saying. That there was nothing wrong. It was hard for her to accept that something was wrong with Cloud.

and inversely Aerith can take one look at Tifa and know she can kick the shit out of Don Corneo easily, but Tifa's only known Aerith for five minutes to at first glance she's thinking she needs to go help her from being raped

The original games are strong on their own, I agree, but man there's just shit I wanna see with the capabilities Square Enix has now. The deck with the ghosts and spirits guarding the fire crystal. The ancient flying ship. The forest where Galuf fights and dies against Exdeath. Exdeath's castle. The big bridge sequence. The crazy last stretch you have to go through where you fight all those bosses before reaching the final area of the game.

And then there's the jobs, where each job not only affects your abilities, but your movement, which could encourage players to pick the less used jobs like Tamer and Dancer. Or jump like 500 feet in the air as a Dragoon. Fights with Gilgamesh where he uses all six or so of his arms to swing wildly at you.

Also, more dialogue between the likeable cast, Or watching people in the tavern sing and dance when you get better at playing the organ, and they're all cheering and clapping for you when you finish. There's so much, man.

People like to think Tifa is more noble because of this, but it may very well be a programming mistake. There was a debate on GameFAQs about this. I think the Japanese version had it right.

I like using Tifa since I feel she's appropriate for a lot of story scenes but not really a fan of her gameplay-wise.

I use new threat though, so for a first vanilla play through I'm pretty sure I went Cloud, Tifa and Cid for their multi-hit limits. Yuffie's good if you use one of her broken builds though.

If you do try the new threat mod at some point though Tifa's grit ability has saved me more than once.

Wasn't Cloud's trip through the Lifestream in Mideel him overcoming his past and accepting himself for who he was? He was pretty headstrong and filled with resolve after that from what I remember. I think because of that he shouldn't have approached his AC situation with such despair.
