There are a few more (excluding DLCs here), and they're better in the sense of now they act similar to the tombs of older games.
Example: TR13 and RottR tombs were all dilapidated rooms and "you" had to "think outside the box" to find a way to the treasure even though the original, intended way is broken.
In Shadow it's back to "people built a mechanism to keep you from the treasure, figure the mechanism out and open the original, intended way to the treasure.

I guess you mean those caches and "challenge" bullshits the first two nuRaider games had. It doesn't have useless cashes but there are still quite a lot of boring challenges as well as buried stuff that you can use in crafting. Problem is, you can only craft useless and ugly outfits.

Yes and this is pretty much the only thing they kind of improved in Shadow, as now you can also rappel. However, the rappeling is so god damned linear that it really doesn't amount to much.

Everything else, from animations over combat to story is a straight up downgrade.

I asked because I like very specific things about 2013/Rise and it's hard to know if the backlash against Shadow was actually justified or not, given the games are already all over the place design-wise.

Well, I liked 13 and Rise very much and I was really hyped about Shadow. I was even close to buying it at full price because the crack took so long. Boy was I disappointed from that game and boy was I glad I didn't shell out 50 shekels for that turd.
