That was Grunty, I think.

They made his head smaller, noted by his original art designer. So that would make his body proportions bigger all around.

They shifted his proportions a bit for Smash. Mostly his head being smaller. Steve Mayles brings it up in an interview.

Anyone else think his render could be better? Kazooie looks fine but banjo looks off, he needs to be looking at the the viewer and be smiling. Alternatively just use his pose at the end of his trailer

His official render and mural art look kind of off, I think the main issue with his in-game render is that he's got a blank expression on his face most of the time

He is based on the original N64 Promotional renders, while in-game they changed his proportions to make his head fit his body

Sakurai opted not to do the same and stuck to the promo renders instead of his in-game model

Not for BK in Smash specifically I don't think. Grant Kirkhope talks about the PowerPoint doc Nintendo showed him detailing how they want composers to organize their tracks for Smash and getting back and forth from Sakurai and Nintendo to perfect the track. Apparently he had the choice of any BK song he wanted to remix and chose Spiral Mountain himself, which ended being the perfect choice by coincidence.
