See, playing expert in untold and so on simply puts it (more or less) on the same level as the first DS games, the lower difficulties are way easier than that - as a means to be accessible to less hardcore players. I think playing expert just for e-cred is stupid, I play expert because I want battles to be desperate and satisfying to win.

Granted, like 90% of the game's difficulty is gaining the knowledge how to NOT get torn to shreds. Pic related, what happens to curious people in a certain post-game stratum.

I have played III and IV, I know how Etrian Odyssey works.
I don't want to play for E-cred, I really really like the atmosphere the labyrinth gives when at any moment you could be blindsided and killed if you're not careful.

I really don't like the fact that it decreases my EXP and damage though, that seems more like a hassle than a challenge.
This is a big shame, I guess I'll go for a lower difficulty because I don't have the time to spend compensating for the lost EXP by grinding, but I'm not happy about it.

from hardest difficulty available, without cheesing (everyone cheesed EO1 to 3 at some point, willingly or not)

that's entirely your choice. IMO when you play below expert, unless you avoid every random encounter, the game showers you with XP too much by just exploring a - little- and the boss battles become dull.

I remember in IV a random event in the 6th stratum where examining a certain tile in the world caused 5 flowers to show up and istantly petrify my entire party.

From that moment on, I learned not to fuck with the labyrinth, the labyrinth gives no fucks.

at this point I'm too wary of events in the labyrinth. When the "check" prompt appears and it's not a shortcut, I mark it down and check it later when I'm ready for ambushes.

Needless to say I'm always miffed when the game throws your team into a sudden no-escape battle without warning, like in V right before the 3rd boss.

harb, not herb. Harbingers are pretty awful for the first ten levels since they have none of their skills online, or really low infliction rate. Hexers and even wildlings are more useful at that point.

It's actually the opposite: the easier options increase those things. There is more too it too: anything lower than Expert gives you a free retry once you die, and you can't get the guild card badge for killing the superboss if you're not on expert

I'd gotten into this mentality with 2U, V, and X, and I went to replay 3 a while ago only to find that back in 3 if you chose not check something and then not investigate it when given the prompt the event would just disappear without any result. The people who say 3 doesn't need a remake really need to play it again and realise just how many small improvements 4 made. You can't even select multiple different items to sell at once in 3, for god's sake.

Harbingers are good in Nexus but easily the weakest in V. But V classes are pretty balanced, even there Harbingers perform satisfactorily.

I get what you mean, personally that didn't bother me that much though.
My biggest grief with the game is how sea quest NPCs soak up experience, not only making you lose a share of the XP won but also causing uneven level growth since you can't take 5 people, and Combat Study doesn't apply. Ironically grinding was faster in EO2.

I found them to bee too picky, with self-buff upkeep costs via "wasted" points and then too high of a mana cost for debuffs which other classes did better, then more mana to attack on those debuffs, etc. They run out before anyone else and I can reach the same goal easier for less with other classes

Once you beat the game you can ‘new game’ it at any point. I beat Classic, played Story mode up until you get Ricky and the Highlander, restarted and got them from the start in my Classic guild.

Combat isn't the main goal of this series and therefore expert is the best difficulty. It's all risk vs reward because you are explorers not fighters and when there's no risk you can practically walk through the whole game pressing A without thinking.
