Which games should I play and what versions? I've never played DQ before and I'm interested, but there is like 2-3 remakes per game and I don't know where to start.

Red stamp means you can start at that game.
if you want to play DQ XI wait for the switch version, it will be the most complete.
Avoid DQ 1 and 2 they suck
DQ III on the snes (translated hack)
DQ IV on the DS (the NES version is bullshit because you eventually will lose control of your characters and mages will just do dumb shit at random with their stupid AI and you'll be forced to just have a full team of warriors.)
I don't know about anything after the DS era.
but i started with 9 so what now
The just play whatever game interests you the most.
Why does it say you can't start at IX? That's what a lot of people started with considering the sales numbers
>I
Mobile. Almost feels like a long Newgrounds flash game but in a good way. You have a smallish world, five towns and a couple short dungeons, and you use clues from NPCs to figure how to proceed. Fun to play knowing it's the literal first
of its It's genre. It's a skeleton of a good jrpg.
>II
skip
>III
SNES for animated sprites, Pachisi and more SOUL.
Mobile for the most up to date localization.
>IV
Mobile for party chat and better music.
>V
DS or Mobile
>VI
skip
>VII
skip, or play after other games in the series. Do not start here
>VIII
PS2 version is SLOW and grindy.
3DS version enemies are visible on the overworld and give more gold after battles. Also battles have a "faster animations" setting which helps immensely.
If you're hardcore you can emulate the PS2 version but I really like the QoL improvements on 3DS though the visuals are slightly downgraded. Be sure to use the patch to restore orchestrated music on 3DS
>IX
only on DS
>XI
Switch, gotta wait a few months
i see 2 Gokus, 3 Gohans, 4 Trunks
Not really sure to be honest. I love 9, although it wasn't my first DQ. It's an OK starting point, but I've personally never really recommended it for someone to start there. I feel like other DQs do the job better at introducing someone into the series. You really can just start wherever though. That pic isn't the end all be all on where to start with DQ.
Ask /vg/
Yea Forums has horrible opinions
DQI&II: Snes Compilation
DQIII: Snes
DQIV: Android (because party chat)
DQV: DS or PS2
DQVI: DS
DQVII: 3DS
DQVIII: Ps2 for graphics / 3DS for more content
DQIX: DS
DQX: never ever
DQXI: Switch until a port of S on PS4/PC
Go by production order.
Otherwise your can start by:
Roto Saga 1>2>3
Zenithia Saga 4>5>6
8 is a good starter if you want a more modern DQ.
11 if you want something even more modern.
Avoid 7 or you will burn yourself, 9 is too different than a normal DQ to start with it.
why not emulate GBC versions of 1-3?
and I'm assuming this 8 "patch" requires a hacked 3DS?
Tomboy Loto is best hero
i want to play DQIV but i hate playing games on my phone, should i play the ds version instead?
Well yeah. If you hate playing games on your phone then what choice do you really have?
see also, OP, start with DQ 5, 8 or 11.
Here's the fucking guide:
I. Don't play this one unless you really want to experience a crusty-ass old-school JRPG. If you must, play the GBC version, or the NES version if you want the full crusty experience, which honesly if you wanna play this you might as well go all in. SNES version has a buggy fan translation (but that's more of an issue on...)
II. This game has a party. It's also difficult and cryptic as shit. Play GBC as the SNES version's fan translation is bugged to fuck.
III. This is the first good one and the best intro to the series. Customizable party with different classes. SNES version has better graphics, GBC has more content, you have a choice here. I prefer SNES.
IV. This game is more character driven. Structured kinda like Mother 3 with its chapters. DS and Mobile are the ones to play, mobile is the definitive version because it has party chat.
V. This easily has the best story and is one of my favorite games of all time. Can't go wrong with any version. SNES version is the crustiest though. PS2 one has orchestral music but looks like shit. I like the DS version. Mobile is the same as the DS version this time so either works.
VI. This one has a fleshed-out job system. Not as good as Final Fantasy V, but still okay. DS or mobile.
VII. This game is fucking long and grindy. Same job system as VI. Neat semi-episotic story structure. Play on 3DS to save your sanity.
VIII. The most famous one, for good reason. It's great. Good characters and a fun adventurous story. Play on 3DS, preferably with a patch to add in the orchestral soundtrack.
IX. This is like a sequel to III but with the skill system of VIII and some semi-MMO elements. Best combat in the series. Only on DS.
XI. It's like a spiritual successor to VIII. Great characters and a fun story. Insane hard mode options if you're into that. Wait for Switch version.
The order:
III, V, VIII
Thn:
9 if u lked 3 te mst
4 if u likd V te mst
11 if u likd 8 the mst
Thn te rst if u wnt
Toriyama has some serious sameface issues but they are good games.
the good ones to start with are 5,8, or 11
the really good classic ones are 3 and 4
9 and 6 are forgettable, but not actually bad
1+2 are simple and grindy
7 is the worst the series has been so far
10 is an mmo
You will miss the party chat which is a huge part of DQIV since the game has the best cast and you can read them talk all the time after each dialog.
If you go for the DS version, the game will be a little bland and more classic but the characters are still cool since they get their own chapter during the first part of the game. I did it whitout it and it's still one of my favorite DQ and I still consider that the cast is one of the best.
>people still say to start with V instead of IV
Retards.
Martina nude mod out
also
>best girl not recruitable
fuck you horii
>Martina nude mod out
It's shit though
They didn't give her Dragon Ball nipples
>XI
>Switch, gotta wait a few months
Why play the worst version on XI when you go out of your way on all other versions to advise the best one?
We all know XI:S is multiplat by now.
nes version of 4 is fixed with a game genie cheat code. the game is really good with it.
Which DQ are you guys currently playing.
9. Working on finishing post game solo. Not completely sure if I can with some of these quests, but I will try.
V on the DS because Yea Forums recommended it. They were right; it’s fucking fantastic.
And we too know that version is gonna come with QoL features, actually pleasant music and new content on top of it all, none of which is guaranteed go ever make it outside of Switch for a long while. Plus, portable is the way to go with RPGs.
Graphics is the only advantage it's got on PS4 and it's not even a big gap this time.
>skip VII
Yikes.
Don't start with 7 though. Play 3ds version when you ever get around to it.
XI is a great entry point.
I started the remake of III on the Super Famicom (I actually own the cart, but put the translated ROM into my SNES Classic). This is the only one besides IX I have yet to either play or beat (not counting X, of course).
Real men do not play remakes. Start with 5 (SNES) or 8 (PS2) if you want a comfortable introduction to the franchise. 11 if you're a real softcock and need to be babied, or the original if you're a true hard cunt with balls of stone.
>DQ 1 and 2 suck
Maybe on the NES but the Game Boy and SNES versions are far superior.
Hacked my 3DS, do I play Terry or Joker 3?
XI finishing post game, IV i just rescued the kids as ragnar, finished II a few weeks back
Are the Heroes games any good? I've played and beaten DQ9, DQ Swords and DQ11 (best game of 2018 imo), and I've really been wanting to play another one since the Smash trailer. Sadly only the Heroes and Builder games are on PS4 and Builder looks like shit. Would you recommend Heroes, or is it one of those repetetive games that bore you to tears after 2 hours? If so, should I just emulate something?
8 3ds has no random encounters, ill take that every day over the ps2 visuals
any pdfs of the art books?
Emulate PS2 English ROM of V
builders 1 is my commute game with the vita. 2 is going to be alot better, but 1 is good
I do know Joker 3 has a fan translation but I can't remember if Terry had one.
V, I'm on my way to save Debora with the kids right now. Beat the giant moose last night.
A slime will come and kill you
But it's the same version, I specifically said XI:S, it's been reported (and photographed) that PS4 disks of the "Switch" version have been circulating. I also didn't mention PS4 only either, most probably will come out on PC too.
Sure, the Switch will get it months before the rest but delayed versions aren't a factor at which is best by the simple fact that Switch's version isn't out yet but it's already recommended, so it's only fair to recommend the other XI:S versions too.
>Plus, portable is the way to go with RPGs.
Completely subjective, both a pro and a con depending on person to person (I'd MUCH rather have a comfy experience at home for instance). On top of that both PS4 and PC version can be played portably too. PS4 through Vita, and PC through any option of your choice (Laptops, or DS-like PC's)
>Graphics is the only advantage it's got on PS4 and it's not even a big gap this time.
As with any port on the Switch both resolution and framerate might be huge issues, not just poly count, LOS, or texture work. We'll have to wait and see.
Currently going through 7 on my 3DS, I'm at the island with the vocation church and I hope this part won't give me another unwinnable boss fight.
Also playing 1 on my modded GBA with an AGS 101 screen with the 1+2 Gameboy Color cartridge. It's comfy
Problem with going chronologically is 1 and 2 are basic as fuck done in the style JRPGs at large abandoned. Which, ironically, might make them fresh to new JRPG players.
Whatever ones you want and interest you.
My order was IX>VI>V>VII>VIII>IV>I>II>III>XI
Honestly mines pretty fucked to have VI and VII so soon in comparison to the others, but it made me love the less popular ones.
VI
I'm grinding Goober to the Hero Vocation. See you all in a couple weeks.
III, just got to Isis.
>started dragon quest with 2
SOMEBODY LOCK ME UP
there is zero reason to play any dq before 3
It's a far better experience to play 1 and 2 before 3.
Got Dragon Quest 8 3DS this morning. Game is really fun so far Yangus voice acting is goat. Kinda scared of using my skill points since everyone says you can fuck up using them. It's fine to just hold on to them and just grind lvs right?
That's fine, but it'll hurt you later on not having better abilities if you haven't spent them. Personally I pick 1 or 2 weapons and max out the party members personal point column.
Well I usually go for optimization and min maxing on RPGs to get that full experience. I don't mind a slow grind without abilities if it means getting the best build. Any recommendations?
Play the GBC remakes of 1-3, they're fantastic. I've been playing through those and so far, they each seem like an improvement over the last. I actually grew up with DQ1 on NES but my god is it much better on GBC. 2 has a lot of grinding but I still like it more than 1 considerably, and I love both games. So far 3 is looking to be my favorite out of the three though.
Hero can do anything really, but swords or lances are probably the best. Boomerangs are really good, but don't bother putting points into the tree. Axes are really good for Yangus, but scythes are acceptable too for the side effects. Go into humanity early so Yangus can have a heal for early game. For Jessica you can go into whips a bit for Twin Dragon Lash since it's really good for bosses but you should focus on getting extra spells from the staves tree (even if you don't actually use staves) and sex appeal. Angelo can do whatever really, I had him use bows because it was unique and eventually got some of his staves tree for the spells Jessica doesn't get.
If you want to trivialize random encounters have someone go into fisticuffs to get Thin Air. I recommend Yangus because he not only has the highest strength but since his Humanity tree isn't that great you can just go with whatever weapon you pick + fisticuffs until you get Thin Air. Everyone other than Angelo can get it though and it doesn't matter that much.
I just finished 1+2 and it's been a great ride
I play Dragon Quest XI when I'm at home and Dragon Quest VIII when I'm at work.
>mfw all these zoomer kiddies just learned about Dragon Quest after the Smash announcement
Hopefully we'll get an English dub patch for the 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI because of this popularity
what would be the point of the 3ds version when you have the switch version?
3 and 4 are the two most overrated games in the series, skip them
I just wanna have the option since the Switch's battery is garbage.
I've been playing the SNES version of 1 recently and the entire game fell apart at some point. All the doors I unlocked are locked back up and the items I had in the bank have all disappeared.
>skip the absolute best of this meh "final fantasy but worse" jarpig series
7 and 8 are the two most overrated games in the series, skip them as well
XI and V are overrates also, don't bother with them.
Fucking this
idunno why you fucks praise those
Made it to Portoga in III, talked to some NPC, game crashed and then my adventure log was lost. Fuck, that's a lot of progress to lose.
bait
You wish
Where can I grab an apk Dragon Quest 1-2-3?
Or am I gonna have to drop a couple shekels?
bait
You can still get roms for the GBC versions. They are pretty nice
Everyone's forgetting the best Dragon Quest
Do the android games run on bluestacks or nox or whatever? I hate playing games on my phone
I don't know why nobody recommends playing the SNES version of VI. It's the only version of the game were you can tame random monsters like in V. That's a big part of the appeal to me.
bait
Isn't SNES superior outside of one extra dungeon and monster medals?
SNES fanlation for I-II is horrendously buggy, hope u can read nip.
you mean for 3? From what I know, only the GBC version has a bonus dungeon but I could be wrong. And like this user said, the translation of the SNES version of 1 and 2 can be game breaking.
1 and 2 on SNES, pretty fucking cool (playing ity on a mini snes)
You are now a criminal. Look out for a van in the next coming months.
Reminder DS versions of the Zenithia trilogy have objectively inferior lower quality music:
DQV's Violent Enemies on DS:
youtube.com
Same song on Mobile:
youtu.be
That's the song you'll be listening to literally one thousand times while playing just fyi
V on the PS2
VIII o the 3DS
XI on the Switch
III on the SNES
The rest can be skipped but the Heroes, Rocket Slime, and Builders spinoffs are pretty good.
>and I'm assuming this 8 "patch" requires a hacked 3DS?
Either that or you emulate it.
I meant 3's SNES version being superior except for the bonus dungeon
>PS4 through Vita
Hope you got good Bandwidth
>and PC through any option of your choice (Laptops, or DS-like PC's)
Oh yeah, Laptops can be played anywhere indeed, it's not like it's the size of your lap or anything
I mean I get it, you do have that option as well, but it's a real hassle if you wanna play portable in either scenario
In both cases you gotta buy the equivalent of a console to act as a peripheral and in the PS4's case, you gotta have good internet connection to boot
The SNES version is indeed the best in musical and graphical terms. And according to the wiki you are right, both the SNES and GBC versions have the bonus dungeons. But only the GBC version has the monster medals
>Hope you got good Bandwidth
A friend of mine for a Vita in 2014 to, I kid you not, remote-play Destiny1 in University. Absolutely one of the worst case scenarios, online-only game, shooter, Uni Wi-fi. And it still worked fine for most of the game's content aside from Raiding or PvP.
I highly doubt there's any issue on home, coffees, metro, bus, or hypermakets. The only place here with shit net is the train, but then again I live in EU.
However let's be honest with ourselves, 90% of "portable" playtime is in the toilet or bed or somewhere in the house where connection isn't an issue.
>Oh yeah, Laptops can be played anywhere indeed, it's not like it's the size of your lap or anything
Did you miss the "DS-like PC's" part? You know, the chip that Switch uses? That was also used before? And variants of it and other chips still used to this day? I'm sure a google search will net you plenty of PC choices that aren't that much bigger than a Switch - not that I think Switch is a good portable to play on-the-move anyway.
>In both cases you gotta buy the equivalent of a console to act as a peripheral
Sure, if portability is such a big deal I'm sure I'd invest in getting one. In my case I only play at home so I couldn't care less, so Switch's literal tablet specs are nothing but a huge downside because I don't have the option to make it a better homeconsole due to its "2-in-1" nature (It's 100% just a portable but I'll concede the Hybrid meme for the sake of argument). So what you said goes both ways, if I want to have a good experience at home I wouldn't use the Switch and instead invest in a peripheral better suited for home use such as PC or PS4 for XI:S.
