Start with the 1-3 collection, skip 2.

Well, as much as people hate it DmC has proven to be a good entree point for a lot of people into the series. As long as you know that what that game is isn't representative of the rest of the series. From there you can pick up any of the other games and go from there. You can start from 1 or 3.

Play 1 first, then play 3. Fuck chronology. You'll appreciate how refined the combat is in 3 more if you play 1, and 1 is a classic.
Then play 4. Just do it.
THEN you're super ready for dmc fuckin 5. The best shit ever.

gameplay wise nero isnt all that deep, dante is fantastic, bloody palace is fantastic, but the campaign is pretty mediocre, dunno how the SE characters are but i assume vergil is great

Buy the HD collection, DMC4SE, and DMC 5.
Then play in the following order:
DMC 1->DMC 3 ->DMC 4SE->DMC 5
Make sure you get to play all of the characters to get the full experience.
After that you can either go DMC 2 or DmC: DE (do not buy vanilla DmC, trust me, it's absolute shit). Only play DMC 2 if you're really curious (because it's that BAD)

It's not. In the same way people posting shittalk when anyone says DmC anything proves nothing. People get irrationally pissy if you ever say to try it but all the hello, tammeems in the world don't change the fact that a shit load of prople got in to the series because of the reboot. It may be retarded but it's accessible and a good place for anyone who isn't in it for the complex Dante combat right off the bat.
Actually, everyone knows that. It's as complicated as DMC's development history, explaining that.

Play 3 first if you want a godtier action game with a lot of heart, or 1 if you want something atmospheric and full of awkward goodness, if lackluster as an action game. Remastered/HD is fine for 3, not sure on 1.
Then play 4 and 5. Ignore the reboot and 2 unless you finish the others and really love the series.
