When you buy a character in the pit stop it replaces the slot with a new one.

From what I can tell, the Pit Stop replaces the item you have bought with something else to buy. So in that sense nothing is time gated. Only the order in which you can buy stuff changes periodically.

I've done two races today. In the first race, 8 players, I came 2nd and got 40-something coins. In the second race, 3 players (lol scrubs leaving), I came first and got 50 coins.

I paid 40 dollars for the game I was promised, not 3/4ths of the content. Offline content is gated behind an online rotational store that you use online currency with, that will soon revolve around microtransactions. As someone with a less-than-ideal internet connection this is bullshit. This is grindy bullshit that's clearly like it is so they can introduce microtransactions. Using content that is already on the disk should never be a "network feature".

activision employee here, microtransactions absolutely 100% were planned for the pit shop, but they were put on hold "indefinitely" due to the loot crate legislation being pushed through right now. they don't consider an E-rated mascot racer being an "adult oriented game" a defensible argument so for the time being it'll all be free content. that's not to say they might not try to reintroduce microtransactions in some form (DLC packs?), but that all depends on if the bill gets through and the general climate of the industry in the near future.

for the love of god avoid online play until you've beaten adventure mode, if you just jump into it you will never finish a race because the turbo autists will be perma-boosting past the finish line while you're half-way through lap 2.

Nah PS4, the egghead was wearing the summer outfit and had the team crash kart with pinstripe's sticker. We had a few more games afterwards, I won a few but he had way more experience with the CNK tracks so I usually came in close second there.
