Game props and environment design still look fucking amazing, despite linear levels and unchallenging gameplay (no hard mode). The game also had the misfortune of being developed (2004-2009) right before the open-world game explosion peaked.
Side note: I never finished XIII-2 or Lightning Returns because of how bland everything felt in comparison. Do they get better?
13 is literally a hallway from 30 hours. Then there's this big open green area with nothing in it and then it becomes linear again. Making a beautiful game is easier like this. Less taxing on the system. Once you start opening up and making levels larger then graphics are going to suffer. It's not like 13-2 looks bad but definitely not as epic as 13. LR on the other hand looks pretty average.
Can I get some sweet Lake Bresha screens? That place looks incredible for 2009.
Colton Mitchell
A lot of these screenies are just of interesting models and textures. >13 is literally a hallway from 30 hours. Then there's this big open green area with nothing in it and then it becomes linear again. Making a beautiful game is easier like this. Less taxing on the system. No arguments there. But the sequel games had much smaller budgets iirc.
why do people act like 13 was some travesty for being a bunch of hallways when 10 was the same
Landon Brooks
I don't understand why people didn't like Snow
Was it because he was a chad
Oliver Stewart
I don't know why FF can't get its shit together
Austin Gray
ff13 was the final nail in the coffin for trad ff games. desu nier feels more like ff than ff does
Dylan Scott
13 was legit really fucking pretty, especially for when it came out. Still endless hallways though.
Connor Long
Literally next on the list because open-world levels were an expectation when FFX came out. FFXIII also advertised itself as being a lot more open than it turned out to be.
i never played the XIII trilogy i think its time even if its bad
Colton Mitchell
I recommend skipping all the extra hallways and collectables. You will spend less time in the same areas and battles are more challenging due to less grinding.
13 was literally never advertised as being open world or even "more open than 10". Expectation from the fans is not the same thing as advertised features.
You can't grind to a point that the game becomes easy until near the end of the game, anyway. There is zero point to not going down side paths and getting items.
Angel Wood
I remember most of the game being pretty easy with a few bullshit bosses sprinkled in. Battles can definitely take longer without leveling though.
I blame it on the battle system. FFX also still felt like an old school FF with towns to explore and stuff. XIII just kept pushing you forward non-stop, amd only opened up for a big empty green area. You never really got to take in any of the amazing scenery
FFXIII was the worst FF due to the fact that it was the very first game for (young) Xbox fans. They lopped up 13 and seeped into the fanbase and eternally made FF fandoms complete shit ever since. You can never, ever, go into a FF forum or thread without (((fans))) saying the APB system was the best combat system in the whole franchise, and how FFXIII was the best one of all time. Thanks, Xfaggots. I'm glad your system killed itself.
Wrong. X ruined the series. It started every single thing wrong with the series to this day. Flashy nonsense, no depth to combat, characters, or story. It has great music and absolutely nothing else.
Gavin Rodriguez
FFXIII is definitely a game that time has been kind to. I HATED it when it came out, but I replayed it last year and had a blast. It's super linear, but goddamn, it fucking beautiful and artistic as fuck. One of the few games from that gen that had legit soul and passion poured into it.
Julian Morgan
Not sure I fully agree. I think Square Enix just felt pressured to "modernize" ancient jprg mechanics.
The console fanboy comments were juicy as fuck when FFXIII was first announced for 360
I never understood why fans disliked XIII so much. I followed the same design as X, with a plot just as bad, but with much better combat and much, MUCH better art design.
Camden Rodriguez
Took me a while to finish it too. I do remember every Gamestop having piles of used FFXIII copies. Notably more than any other game at the time.
Is this game any good? How long are they? I don't care about them being linear, never enjoyed padded open worlds.
Isaac Wood
I like FFX but i can't deny is linear as fuck, but linear linear AS FUCK I can't understand why people complain in FFXIII but not in FFX.
My theory is that FFX had more charismatic characters. Personally i never played FFXIII but i can guess that the protagonists take everything to seriously. Not enough goofy times or something like that.
Ethan Bennett
Pretty sure a big chunk of my skepticism toward this game came from names like "Hope" and "Snow"
Controlling only one character was dumb. Giving you a game over when the controlled character died even more so, making instant death attacks just a 33% chance to game over. The crystarium system was stupidly dumbed down compared to the sphere grid. Super linear and gated by chapter progression. You didn't even need to grind. Just never run from combats and you are at the cap near the end of each chapter.
Most of my issues were fixed in 13-2. Story was still meh. Haven't really gotten into lightning returns yet.
Hudson Rivera
LONG FFX definitely has better character relations. In XIII there was too much character symmetry. All six main characters had similar, parallel character developments that led up to getting their summon. It got pretty boring by the last character's.
I wish the robot god was his default form. The pope was so generic.
Oliver Collins
Milkers-chan looks good without glasses Wish she didn't have to die
Charles Lewis
more pretty textures
What if pretty set pieces in small games will becomes a reliable way for small/indie devs compete with bloated AAA games? Or maybe within the VR audience? A lot of current VR games are pretty rough looking. FFXIII proves 10 year old tech can look great.
How's your framerate? The PC port is notoriously poorly-optimized.
Dominic Morris
>Pay up, bitch. These shots are a few years old so I don't remember. I don't think I would've played in 4k without 60fps though. Some of my last screenshots are 1080p, so I may have had issues late game. Also I usually balance things out with lower anti-aliasing settings. PC was also brand new at the time. Built for Witcher 3.
I fucking hated these things. Tedious "Kill ____ amount of _____ enemies" quests to unlock a fast-travel point. Iirc you can't do these out of order either, and if you skipped them you couldn't go back without walking the whole way.
This was in the "open world" part of the game, near the end.
Yeah it was both confusing and tiring. I don't think I even found the rideable chocobos in my playthrough. Got pretty eager to finish when I was near the end.
I remember when I thought that this looked amazing. This, Doom 3 and Motostorm made me think that graphics are finally here.
Brody Thomas
It's one of those jrpgs where you collect and train party members from random enemies, right? Motostorm was rad. I remember having an "oh shit" moment when I saw the 3D tire marks in the mud.
Yes. The dlc bosses also let you get classic bosses like Gilgamesh or Omega Weapon as party members. I approve of any game that allows me to have a Gigantaur in the party.
Cameron Carter
>Following this path sure looks like it will be worth our time!
That's a pretty good argument. You play FFXV with the official mod that gives all NPCs cactaur suits?
the sequels are vastly superior games, give them a go user. Cool thread though, FF13 was stunning to look at, holds up pretty damn well for a game about a decade old imo.
Lucas Sanchez
>This fucker again. At least I've got my sweet bear trench coat this time! I might soon. I used to be into /3/ stuff so visuals carry a lot of entertainment value for me. That's why I've held off.
I disliked how characters walked around by themselves in combat and having to slowly watch them walk straight into the slowest, most telegraphed boss attacks and getting oneshot.
Charles Hernandez
I've been avoiding screenshots of pre-rendered scenes but I had a gut feeling Yea Forums would like this one.
The walking around doesn't actually do anything though, right? It's just a visual detail that looks better than characters standing around, like in FFX or earlier.
i honestly loved them all but yes i wish the original had a harder mode to play, like having every boss use Doom like the Eidolons do so you dont over rely on medic spam.
LR is one of my fav games ever, the gameplay is amazingly fun especially for an FF game where you usually lack any real control in the middle of combat, LR lets you avoid fucking everything and the staggering feels super awesome when you like perfect block shit and counter, or break off giant enemy tails, juggle them in the air. game had a ton of fun shit you could pull off
It was possible for characters to avoid an attack by simply not being near the enemy while they attacked. This meant avoiding an attack is basically rng since the game has people move on their own. Doing the hunting missions underleveled is basically an rngfest of hoping the characters dodge enough to not die.
Alexander Butler
Awesome dude
How is it, visually? Trailers and screenshots make it looks pretty bleak and dark all the way through. I still haven't finished XIII-2 yet. Noel is pretty annoying.
I abused it by having lightning doing air attacks at the same time as an enemy did ground attacks. She did her air combos and safely avoided what should've hurt her.
Andrew White
FFXIII gets a lot of hate but it has great aesthetics, amazing soundtrack and an underrated battle system. Not to mention one of the best menu designs in a game.
It was more of a Final Fantasy game than FFXV and much more memorable.
so is the XIII trilogy like a complete game now? I remember XIII being branded as a short 6/10 walking simulator on launch and I didnt pay attention to the episodic sequels. is the complete game worth playing?
Ayden Nelson
She was supposed to be male but they change it for gay reason
Ryder Miller
>vanille was voiced by an austrailian but people thought she was faking it because her accent wasn't stereotypical >fang was the actual fake accent That's funny.
Kevin Cook
Fuck yes. The soundtrack was great
I feel like a lot of people misunderstood the battle system too. People read it as jrpg on autopilot when actually battles revolved around managing the momentum of attacks, healing, damage taken, etc over time. As opposed to using direct damage commands.
The intro credits were great as well: youtube.com/watch?v=fUyAPNzRa2E Makes me think they were trying to do what FFX did stylistically with water, but with air.
Combat system works well enough, you just don’t unlock it’s full capabilities for ages if i recall, the early parts of the game are ‘auto-pilot’, they take far too long to remove the shackles.
Jonathan Watson
Alright. That's all, folks. Thanks for watching. Smash that subscribe button. etc
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. You don't get the sentinel (like a mmorpg tank) until halfway through the game.
I got way to fucking far for how little I understood the combat
Levi Bailey
XIII was complete from day 1. XIII-2 and Lighting Returns are (unnecessary) sequels.
Oliver Kelly
They do look best on PC.
Ryan Howard
Yeah, once it does unlock I think the combat system works fine, also once you’re no longer bound to controlling what character/party the game wants you too, It gets far more enjoyable. Combo of Lightning/Fang/Hope was generally my go to team.
Henry Turner
FFVII was the worst FF due to the fact that it was the very first game for (young) Playstation fans.
Daniel Flores
Smaller budget games with more fan service and asset reuse. They might be fun but they're also there to milk off the first game.
All FFXIII have a special place for me for a great OST. Plus, Sazh might as well be the best FF character.
Adam Collins
people hate this game so much and i dont get it. it's beautiful and i had fun the tutorials go on too long, yes but the end game is the best of any manline FF game, IMO
Zachary Adams
me too, btw. it's amazing actually
James Wood
Why do they look so amazing on PC while it is not on the console?
Bentley Brown
Resolution helps.
Colton Rivera
AA and nicer shadows too
Ethan Barnes
Looks like something out of FF12
Michael Evans
>Sazh might as well be the best FF character. He was the only character that didn't act like a young Anime JPRG protagonist and I loved him for it.
They should've just made an action RPG with Lightning using all her cool, anti-gravity shit. Not like LR tho, that game was trash. The plot is beyond salvation. It's easily one of the worst vidya ever written.
Carson Jones
Third one had a new gameplay, gimmick, combat system, models and general structure Sure it looked cheaper and models were less detailed, but it was more "open", it felt a bit like Majora's Mask (with the world ending in a few days or so) and enemy encounters were also way more fun than the first two games The plot fully embraced the over-the-top Japanese retardness of the trilogy, it's now about God's personal emissary (Lightning) fighting DragonBall-tier battles to save as many souls as possible before the world ends The dynamics -and VA performance- of Hope and Lighting are very similar to the way Automata's 2B and 9S interact (they also sound the fucking same to me)
Game is set in a non-Venice, which is probably why playing it in Japanese feels slightly off; dress up was also fun
You'll need a cheat engine table to force the game to run in 4K.
This thread makes me want to get around and finally finish FFXIII which I was enjoying a lot before my HDD crapped out and I never bothered again. Just curious though, is the English VA better than the Japanese VA? Which should I go for?
Landon Perez
i enjoyed it for what it was.
Adrian Wright
It's too easy
Easton Cooper
Same. I enjoyed it pretty much all the way through. I don't get how nearly all discussion about it is negative, even on other sites.
Welcome to the internets. Where even your butcher from next door is jyet another troll.
Kevin Hill
this, also
you know how people seem to be today, they get unrealistic expectations and then get unreasonably angry about it. I think it has more to do with not doing anything with your life, but some games have really been a real let down and that sucks. Though i do think they are better than they've ever been plus playing too much
Connor Gonzalez
i like it but its obviously rush fragmented story
Landon Ward
In GDC 2017 there's hint that they are developing smarter AI for hard mode in FF15 but i guess it's been cancelled along with DLC
James Anderson
13-2 is great, didn't play lightning returns though.
David Torres
Anyone have that comic of Sazh making diamond rings and grills from his crystalized son?
