There is a love and hate period with everything. Family Guy was a cult classic for the first few seasons when Fox canceled it. After the reruns on Adult Swim gave it major exposure, Fox restarted the series with a new direction. Most people agree precancled Family Guy was the best with some people liking a few seasons after it. This has always been the prevailing view point but now people are distanced away enough from the bad taste they are willing to talk about it. Spongebob was a bit of anomaly since the first 4 seasons of it have always been beloved and people weren't afraid to talk or meme about it. I think its because Spongebob is a kids show and its easy to separate to justify not liking the later seasons because of the changing direction. Family Guy its much harder to sort out whats good and not because even though there is a decrease in quality, it still runs on the same formula from the earlier seasons.
