Usually just pick the characters who manage to not be annoying or unrealistic. Which means I usually just don't pay attention to most vidya characters. Vidya writers just cannot into writing.

If I had room for a detailed downside, I'd make Mari's spending more time on beautification than studying magic. So, high magical skill offset by not having a lot of magical knowledge.

I generally prefer all male parties. And theres 3 kinds of groups I'll run if possible. The main being nothing but spell casters every single one with a long silvery beard. The second is big ass orc warriors and the third is a group of idiot kids with swords. Only game I've managed all three in was dragon's dogma. If none are possible I make the party as dysfunctional as I can simply to laugh at the idea of a group that hates every member journeying together.

Most of the game would be an escort quest for the NPCs as you act like a dick because you are the chosen one and have been corrupted by the attention from it. Much of the time the kid is actively sabotaging the party from saving the world because he does not want the world to be saved because then his story would be over and he would have no purpose left as the chosen. Wholesome story of kid realizing that people can care about him for more than just his destiny, hopefully before he has burned too many bridges.
