Super Mario

I think it's time we had a discussion about good ol' Mario. Come get comfy.

Where do they take the series after Odyssey? Do you prefer 2D or 3D?

Realizing how few of them I've actually finished over the years. Which of NEW games are worthwhile?

Attached: 1551578750001.jpg (750x1000, 150K)

>Where do they take the series after Odyssey?
you make odyssey 2

I really like 3D World and Odyssey. What qualifies as new for you? Or do you me the "New Super Mario Bros" series?

Attached: ffee448acd95f09f9e6a3fc97d83d8f0188e73c0.png (1303x2000, 2.62M)

Odyssey is worthwhile to beat but not to 100%.
3D World is more enjoyable to 100%.
NSMBU is great, the Switch port is worth it if you have a controller with a good D-pad.
There wasn't been a worthwhile RPG since Dream Team, though.

Attached: 1541650740342.jpg (863x926, 118K)

>odyssey 2

So they just do what they did with Galaxy? I'd be fine with that desu

after aonuma straight-up said that breath of the wild 2 came to fruition because they had too many ideas for dlc, i think odyssey 2 is gonna be the obvious route for 3d mario too

New Super Mario brothers specifically, yes. Could have just typed that out. I was under the impression the console versions were good, DS was good enough, and New 2 on 3DS wasn't anything special.

Attached: fratricide_by_thebourgyman-dcjkn6j.jpg (800x800, 311K)

sauce?

>New 2 on 3DS wasn't anything special.
NSMB2 is easily the weakest game in the series. Personal ranking:
DS > U > Wii > POWER GAP > 2

Ever since 64, I have been waiting patiently for a Mario game that exists in a single open world instead of using a hub system. Something with a progressive quest like the classic Zelda games had.

That's fine. Just more of a good thing. I still need to 100% Odyssey. Maybe after I complete Twilight Princess.

Is 3D land any good? I skipped it

Attached: 57608604c220bf7601b1cd5c811f5712ddd25f01.jpg (1500x2048, 382K)

I feel like that's what Odyssey was supposed to be like, but they had to split the game up into segmented Kingdoms because they couldn't make the BotW/Zelda formula work for Mario.

It's still a score machine system. Collecting more and more moons isn't much of a real quest.

>Is 3D land any good?
it's fine but after 3d world came out, i don't see why would you play it other than for some super meryo on the go

How would you make a quest system work for a Mario game? Turn it into Jak II where you go around different segments of the world, completing different objectives through platforming challenges?

Completing one goal has to make it possible to access a new goal. In Zelda, they usually give Link new devices. Mario usually has to collect stars or sols or moons. The tricky part is making it interesting. To make it interesting, let the mechanism follow a logical narrative how they try to in Zelda. Doesn't have to be weapon based, but some kind of progression could make things compelling. Something that might be appropriate for Mario, might simply be that it takes effort to actually reach certain places, and once there, something fundamental changes. Perhaps Mario can now jump higher, or maybe a new volcano erupts and the map changes.

It's good. Maybe a bit on the easy side. Not quite as brain dead easy as Super Mario Bros U.

They could make it so you unlock new moves like Banjo-Kazooie

Attached: 3f849f0bdb6302b9f791fa181f8864152bee0f36.jpg (1404x2591, 451K)

>Perhaps Mario can now jump higher,
That's what's done in Banjo Kazooie. You would complete certain objectives in levels, and that would give Kazooie new abilities for the player to use.
>or maybe a new volcano erupts and the map changes.
Again, Jak II. When you complete an objective in an area, one section would get flooded, or a building would collapse, giving the player access to a new section in another area.

I'd be fine with both being introduced. Maybe just for one game.

Maybe. Maybe force him to swap things out in designated areas. He does already have a basic power-up mechanism with mushrooms and fire flowers and stuff. Maybe he needs a fire flower to beat zone X, but if he can successfully keep that power over a distance than he can find a secret back in zone W. Find a switch palace and then maybe freeze powers are available to be found around the map.

What's the best Sports game?

>Where do they take the series after Odyssey?
Odyssey 2 except instead of Peach getting kidnapped make the plot revolve around Pauline with New Donk serving as a hub world, with more playable characters like Luigi and Peach and more challenging platforming
>Do you prefer 2D or 3D?
2D generally though 3D is great too

Shit. I forgot about the movie

What about the Baseball games? I actually follow real baseball so I've always been curious about those

I just want a revival of the Mario Land series with playable Daisy. Or a Luigi platformer where he has his Smash Bros moveset. Paper Luigi in the Waffle Kingdom would be awesome, but they'll never do it because they think it won't sell as well as a Mario led game. They'll never do any of these for the same reason.

There's always the rumor that goes around about how Miyamoto threw a chair at Koizumi after he found out about the storybook, but it was very much true that Koizumi and the dev team had to hide the storybook from Miyamoto until the game was near completion.

Attached: Chapter5-3.png (416x240, 67K)

How do they work Rosalina into the main plot of a Mario game at this point? Unless they make Galaxy 3 I don't know if we'll ever see her with a big role again. Feels bad

>Miyamoto threw a chair at Koizumi

What?

Rosalina was pretty much created for Galaxy and to add some story to the space exploration. It was great for giving context as to why everyone was in space, why the Lumas were so important, and how Mario would advance in the final frontier.

It's just a rumor. Miaymoto doesn't approve stories in the Mario games, but I doubt he would take his anger out on his colleagues that far.

Attached: mildly_adequate_rosalina_fanart_by_weebybell_dceolu8.png (700x1000, 248K)

There's always Bug Fables coming out this year. That's the closest we'll probably ever get to a true TTYD sequel

This

Honestly l never understood Miyamoto beef with having stories in Mario games like what harm is it doing?

Attached: 7-72652_mario-thinking-mario-thinking-emoji.jpg (820x1147, 137K)

What is his involvement at this point? Don't get me wrong I'm happy with everything Miyamoto created and how he established the groundwork for so much. But I can't imagine he really does much these days other than police the devs responsible for these games.

I think I would like Galaxy 3. I really miss how the wonky gravity would affect platforming. I think the best thing to do would be to let the gravity affect more than just Mario. Have some Zero-G sections with floating items and such

Attached: 6182b2670aa3e285d955f8fdd4584169c2d66a21.jpg (2480x3507, 785K)

Because everything must be BING BING WAHOO, but then again, Mario never really had any deep story, but it was nice to get that lore in Galaxy

>police the devs
This is exactly what he does and due to the way the Japanese are about elders, no one tells him to fuck off when he tells them to do something.

Attached: 1479518809124.png (870x942, 448K)

Miyamoto believes that Mario games always have to be gameplay first, and that a story not involving "Mario saves the princess from Bowser" for the billionth time will detract the focus from the gameplay. I like the way the story was handled in Galaxy, though. It was completely optional, not necessary to complete the game, and offered a nice touch of backstory as to why Rosalina was raising this family of Lumas in space.

Attached: Chapter1-5.png (416x240, 84K)

Honestly, that's all I want in any new mainline games or RPG games some new lore that's all also don't let him touch an another Paper Mario again please I'm sick of seeing different coloured Toads all the time

>tfw we'll never see SMB2 bosses(aside from Birdo) used again
>tfw no revitalization of Super Mario Land
>tfw no new Wario Land games
>tfw neither Nintendo nor Squaresoft care about Super Mario RPG
>tfw Waluigi isn't in any Wario game, let alone a playable fighter in Smash

Attached: sad ganmo.png (536x426, 219K)

I like it when the story in games is optional but rich. I like finding lore the little bits of lore scattered around DPPT make me so happy. Contrary to popular belief, I don't like Cynthia because she looks like Rosalina, I like her because she's an interesting character that doesn't make everything about her immediately apparent and she looks like Rosalina.

He's basically Yea Forums if Yea Forums actually put it's fucking money where it's fucking mouth is and actually thought gameplay was the most important aspect of a game, instead of just virtue signalling in threads and then going to to buy the latest jrpg because of the story. Everytime I see someone claim gameplay > anything else in a thread i just laugh because I know they're just lying to themselves that they believe that.

How would they hide little pieces of lore? As much as I like the stories I think having an area in every game that's just there to dump lore on you would be kind of boring. I'm not saying the game needs Item descriptions or anything but it needs to be interesting. Maybe do "show don't tell" and hide it in the level design?

>don't let him touch an another Paper Mario again
Haven’t played any of them, yet I feel your pain

>all those anons out there who will never get their perfect Rosalina gf

>This just became SUPER relevant

I recall the story that Miyamoto will interrupt a new game pitch if the person spends too much time on the scenario, forget where I read that. Yeah, he is just supremely "gameplay first", to the point that pic related is not "hypocritical" because a movie-like presentation is explicitly part of the design. Obviously Nintendo is full of stories where that mentality makes cool games, but if anything Rosalina's room feels like the right compromise.

Different poster, I will have to look this up.

Attached: star_fox_galaxy_by_yoshiman1118-d6yonrv.png (1209x820, 142K)

That's why I brought up the champion of the games. She's initially shown to give off a no nonsense feel, but it's later shown that she's super chill as you find out later on when she just starts crashing at your villa in Platinum and in the next generations where she just takes vacations to a far off region for half the year and fucks off to the pokemon equivalent Hawaii because she got bored. Events in the games also show that she knows a whole lot more than she lets on.

Attached: 1539059555024.png (1114x1152, 688K)

Yeah that sounds fine. Would still like to see some of the story integrated into the level design itself though

I can't really think of any games that did the level design aspect well. I hear OoT did it in some places, but I feel that's just people looking for shit that isn't there.

Man, Twilight-Arwen was great to Rosalina

Attached: Rosalina_25_Expressions_by_Twilit_Arawen.jpg (1280x1582, 386K)

The only games that I think of that do good environmental design like that are Majora's Mask and Mario Sunshine. Majora definitely feels like a world that's supposed to be alive but has some eerie feeling going over it, and that's without talking to the characters. The Great Bay and the Southerh Swamp give off vibes of areas that aren't as vibrant as they're supposed to be. Mario Sunshine also does this design well, as all the different areas mesh together to give the feeling of an island with an active economy and people living together.

I'm saving this for future reference, user.

It helps that you can see other areas of the game depending on where your at in sunshine.

God I want Sunshine 2 so badly. That fucking hotel level was so good. And the game just felt good to play. Everyone meme'd about how it's a bad Mario game so now we'll never see anything like it again. Very unfortunate.

I can agree with you on sunshine, but I'm going to have to say no on sunshine. Sunshine feels alive, but it's lacking in things to find when you go slow and take it all in. I'm not asking for a secret passage to open up when I look at that pattern on the wall, I'm asking for a book that not everyone who plays the game will read to tell me about an in game location with nothing to it but being a location, in a book, in a world. I want things like that. I miss the lovingly crafted secrets that they person who made them knows not everyone will see and says "that's okay".

Make Odyssey 2.

Make Luigi playable.

Bring back more classic enemies like Boo.

When the early Mario games were being made on the NES and Game Boy, gameplay had to be the number one aspect of the game, since you didn't have any room on a 128KB Famicom cartridge to tell a story, and there wasn't much room in the instruction manual either. Back then, the game completely overshadowed the characters. By the time Super Mario Galaxy came out on the Wii, the developers had much more time and resources to focus on the game, and they had extra time to make Rosalina an actual character and give her a story that justifies and enhances her presence.

Attached: 1552793850230.jpg (1822x2048, 250K)

So essentially, you want the kind of bonus content found in Elder Scrolls and System Shock games where you find extra material that isn't relevant to the main plot or events of the game, but enhances the world and gives it extra depth?

The Enemy variety in SMO and BoTW is laughable. I do hope they fix that in the newer games.
user, I've been here the entire time discussing game world design. Please don't get upset.

Come for the Rosalina content, stay for the discussion

Despite their inclination for Waifufaggotry, most Rosafags are actually fairly intelligent and enjoy discussing things they like.

Attached: 1547449044078.png (1000x1535, 1.83M)

Fact: Rosalina posters are one of the most sane groups of people on Yea Forums and one of the few groups that can have coherent discussion without having everything devolve into "cope, yikes, have sex, dilate," etc.

Attached: 1548313177538.jpg (1000x1276, 351K)

Now he mentions it, if Wario can get a potential love interest, the sky is really the limit.

That and the instruction manual, what with Super Mario Bros. having the "turning the citizens into blocks" and "Peach can magically undo a lot of Bowser's antics" that never get mentioned again. And if anything the Rosalina storybooks were a very literal recreation of THAT, just with a bit of ambiguity to tie into the game progress. I don't recall Miyamoto objecting to Link's to Past's comparatively bloody epic manual intro.

Ha ha ha, no harm done, that was just the PERFECT response that I somehow did not see coming at ALL.

sigurd hosenfeld, appears to have died

with Zelda I think Miyamoto always intended on it being more story-heavy than Mario so it makes sense that he'd be fine with that having more to its plot beyond "save the princess"

>The Enemy variety in SMO and BoTW is laughable.
To be fair, it's not like Mario games have ever had a diverse selection of enemies. If you take all the games together, it does seem like a lot. But individually, most of the enemies within a Mario game are simply another obstacle for him to step on.

I guess my point with that post about the instruction manual was that at the beginning of the series, Nintendo had to put all their focus into making Super Mario Bros a good game. Because back then, it didn't matter how good the story was or how well the world was built, if the game sucked, it wasn't selling. After Mario became a successful series, THEN they could start making new characters and interesting stories around them

True, I do remember chuckling at some older video games with particularly detailed scenarios, so I would agree Nintendo put everything where they should have. And forget Link to the Past, I had forgotten is run by the newer Zelda games in some capacity, even if Aonuma directs.

HUH, that's neat. I can see why the artists might have though the extra green and grey would be too much in sprite form.

She used to get a thread every Sunday night. I remember when we agreed we'd do them on Sunday night to keep the underage posters to a minimum. Everyone forgot that and started making them during the day and on weekends, then we got the shitposters back.

Well, that doesn't really matter because it's summer now. So all the underageb& won't be worrying about school nights until August.

Very disappointed it took this long for someone to say Strikers or Strikers Charged, because they are both equally among the best multiplayer games of all time.

This man can fucking see into the future. It's TOO accurate

Reminder if you don't think Rosalina was originally going to be Mario's daughter then you are a brainlet
>OHASGOHG GAMETHEORY?
I haven't even watched more than 2 minutes of that video, fuck off

I played the original Strikers on GameCube at a friend's house recently, it's not as good at you remember. Strikers Charged is superior in every way.

I know, that's why I stopped making them in the summer. Things should be real nice again once August is here. It's going to be nice once I finish this class this Thursday. I've be able to focus on my 3D stuff until mid-October. I've been wanting to try some cuter stuff for a while now, but couldn't.

I hate Hollywood """"""""""humor"""""""""""
What is it with these liberals and being so tryhard, what happened to being genuine

You and I both. Although I don't know what exactly I'll be doing to kill my time this summer. 3D art like that seems fun, but I don't really have a good PC to practice on. Grinding Hackerrank can get boring, maybe I should just read SICP and K&R again for a refresher.

I've done several dolphin netplay matches online and its a blast every time. It's more accessible since there's no wiimote configurating. I think both games stand on their own. I prefer the bicycle kicks in the GC version alongside minor things, but I will admit I prefer Charged. It's just a damn good sequel. But I see it as a Kazooie/Tooie scenario where its just preference.

I want a game that allows for really challenging stuff for longtime players. I grew up on Mario, I don't start REALLY having fun til I'm near the end of the games now cause that's when shit actually offers a challenge and gets really interesting.

I get Mario is for kids and I'm not asking for them to change that, just for alternate routes and that sort of thing. Odyssey is arguably the easiest 3D Mario, and for a game that was marketed as for the 'I grew up with 64/Sunshine' crowd, it didn't feel like it was a game for people who grew up playing the series. It really felt targeted more towards new players and people who haven't played since the 64.

I might have to wait for the inevitable Mario Maker 3D to get my fix.

Stuff like story/lore is whatever but I do care a lot about atmosphere and I wish they were willing to be a bit more cool/dangerous. Again, not asking for anything inappropriate for kids, but give me way more of stuff like the Ruins Kingdom and way less of stuff like the rabbit gang.

Play Dark Souls. Best cohesion between level design and story I've ever seen. You'll miss a lot of it on a first playthrough but once you start to pick up on things it's crazy how fast stuff starts falling into place.

On that note, DS has really tight level design that also manages to be very open without falling into the wide empty "open world" design tropes. Reminds me a lot of Mario 64 in that respect, which is a comparison I never thought I'd make. I'd like more Mario games to go that route, with enough options that smaller, tighter areas are both open and immediately interesting. More, smaller, denser levels rather than a few big ones.

It can get hard to do things you like between being a full time student and work. It'll be real nice to not need to work around those hours in class.
One thing about the computer though. I started on a lime green dell inspiron that came with Vista on it years ago, I'm sure whatever potato you have can manage blender if it's been made after vista was killed

I was 12 when I beat Galaxy 2 for the first time, and it felt just like that back then. Mods I'm 20 now so please don't ban me
It really feels like all the good levels in Mario games are saved for the very end. One way to remedy this would be to have a Star Fox-like system where getting more collectibles or completing levels with faster times unlocks harder levels or more challenging routes. Or make it like Crash Bandicoot where being a certain number of levels with no deaths unlocks a hard level with a good reward.

I want to see a Super Mario multiverse game. I want them to have Mario go through different planes of existence like in Planescape: Torment.

Perhaps they could do a proper time travel game unlike the education-oriented Mario In Time.

Alright, lads. You get one more bump from me before I go to bed as I can't start goofing off in the home stretch of this class. Wish me luck and see you next time.

Good luck user, hope you do well on that class.

I'm going to have the opposite reaction and say "Mario Galaxy 2 is almost 10 years old?!"

Yeah anything like that would be good. Just whatever gets me to adrenaline pumping levels faster.

Are there any good 3D platformers that feel like the difficulty curve is designed for people who have played the genre their whole life? All of them seem like they're for kids - which I understand, but I'd love a good 3D platformer that lets me get into the thick of it right away.

9 years old, to be precise. One of the reasons I like Rosalina so much is because I grew up with the Galaxy games, and the storybook made 10-year-old me bawl my eyes out. It still makes me cry to this day.

I'm not sure if it's the kind of difficulty that you're looking for, but Jak II is pretty hard for 3D platformer standards. It's not like a curve to the hard levels, more like the game is pretty relentless with its enemy placement and very unforgiving with checkpoints. Jak 3 is also pretty fun, but 2 is definitely harder.

Attached: jak-ii-screen-05-ps4-us-06dec17.jpg (1920x1080, 248K)

Never thought much about it but growing up with the 64 games is probably why I've got a preference for Peach. Sure Daisy was in a few spinoffs but not many of them back then.

I like all three of them though.

I always got the vibe it was more of an action puzzle/adventure/zelda type of game than a straight 3D platformer. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Guess I should mention Super Monkey Ball 2 if we're talking difficult platformers, if that even counts as one. But that game goes from 'fair' to 'kaizo bullshit' pretty quickly.

Jak 1 is just Sony and Naughty Dog's attempt at making their own Banjo-Kazooie.

Jak 2 takes Jak 1's platforming, replaces the eco with guns (but you get a beserk Dark Eco mode as well), and trades the interconnected levels for a GTA-styled hub city, complete with steal-able hovercraft. It also goes from being a collectathon to having more linear-styled, objective based levels.

Jak 3 introduces the Desert Wasteland, and Light Eco powers to compliment Jak 2's Dark Eco powers. It's more of Jak 2, but they toned the difficulty down, and the Wasteland stuff is mainly seen as filler to make the game seem like it's doing more than 2.

Someone redpill me on Odyssey.

too easy and too many collectibles
great presentation though

Decent game with some good platforming segments, but 100% is just a chore. The "filler moon" meme is real, and it's just so boring having to collect the moons hidden in random dumpsters and ground pound spots. It's very much like Sunshine where it's easy to "beat" and get to the credits, but 100%ing is a total drag.

Nintendo kept posting that bit of promotional material around social media, the one that went

64 - Sunshine - Odyssey
Galaxy - Galaxy 2 - 3D Land - 3D World

To show everyone that this was the 'true' 3D Mario sequel they've been waiting for.

But once you play the game you realize it actually goes like

64 - Sunshine
Galaxy - Galaxy 2 - 3D Land - 3D World
Odyssey

With Odyssey just starting a new chain since it doesn't really feel like a continuation of either of the previous lineages, and more like it's as different from 64/Sunshine as the other games are.

I would've preferred another 64/Sunshine style experience but this is something that varies with different people. I probably would've been more receptive to Odyssey if they didn't spend so much effort advertising it as a return to form.

Hm.
How about this for a new Mario game?
>Alternate universe where Mario, Luigi and Bowser switch roles, Bowser and his Brother are the duo, Mario/Luigi are mixed together into one character, Jumpman and Peach is Toadstool, retaining the same role

Honestly, after going back and replaying Sunshine, it feels like Sunshine belongs on the top row of this image. The appear to be open world, but they don't actually involve any exploration. They just use the open levels as a backdrop for the linear platforms, or as a setpiece for the hole the leads to a FLUDD-less level. All the Shines in a stage have to be done in a specific order, and only the 7th shine (Shadow Mario level) is actually required to progress the game and open up the final level (Corona Mountain). Sunshine disguises itself as an open world game, but the platforming and level structure is very much linear.

Attached: lEnjqJ2.jpg (1920x1080, 248K)

Attached: SMB2_Mario_8_4_Blue_Bowser.png (256x224, 1K)

In terms of progression that's very true, but Sunshine does feel like it continues the movement that Mario 64 started. I think Sunshine is a bit rougher in it's movement than 64 is, but both games feel pretty similar to move around in.

The top row feels very different to move around in, 3DL/W are different but feel like they've got more in common with Galaxy's movement than 64/Sunshine's.

You are right that Sunshine is actually very linear though, way more than it needs to be. There's no reason for so many special zones to be blocked off before it's time for you to select the specific mission.

I wish there was enough activity to merit a Mario series general. Mariofags are usually pretty good about discussing the games, even in porndump threads.

I wouldn't consider this to be a porn dump thread, even if the modelfag showed up. It's just an actual vidya thread with people posting Rosalina in between.

I like Mario games to stay Mario universe rather than crossover with stuff like animal crossing or zelda, but bringing over dk, yoshi and wario stuff is welcome.

I'll never understand how the baby characters became staples. They're so boring and just one is enough.

I wish they would let main cast characters appear in main games more often. Like if they did another New Super Mario Bros, have Wario and Waluigi play a role

The first two babies, Mario and Luigi, came from Yoshi's Island. The other babies came from Yoshi's Island DS, with the exception of Baby Daisy and Baby Rosalina, which were OCs made for the Mario Kart games. Honestly, the babies feel like the belong in YI and only YI. Seeing them next to their adult counterparts feels out of place, and it's not like Baby Mario has a huge fanbase rooting for him.

Attached: Star_Children_YIDS.png (256x192, 30K)

DS version was superior to N64.

Attached: SM64DS.jpg (1024x879, 153K)

Yeah I know where they all originate from, I just don't get why they keep including so many of them in each spinoff title.

YI is probably my favorite Yoshi game but even the Yoshi series is better off just letting go of the babies and doing its own thing with Yoshi. The yarn games wouldn't be improved by putting baby mario in them.

Baby Mario and DK Jr are all the baby characters we need, and we don't even really need them. Baby Bowser has effectively been replaced by Jr.

I liked the idea of different babies affecting how Yoshi controlled in DS, but restricting running to baby Mario made the others feel like a chore to use. If you could run with all of them and if the soundtrack had more than one fucking melody, YI DS would've been a really amazing game.

I really like those renders, I'll give it that.

Though I do hate how flamboyant Yoshi became around the gc/ds era.
