I brought up Suikoden because you said Cloud is unique because he's a nobody. The standard formula in Suikoden is you get reduced to nothing, then build up to a small band of friends, then an army, then a rebellion, then a nation. And most of them are nobodies except Tir and Chris, who are decedents of a general. But they still become fugitives from their own nation.

Dragon Quest and many other JRPG series also do the nobody plot. And since you're saying it's the message and the plot twist that counts, I'd say Dragon Quest VIII does it the best. Because you go literally the whole game thinking he's nobody. Then you find out in the post game he was the real heir to the throne the whole time. But he became royalty by adventuring and earning the love of princess, not being born a prince. And all his lineage is pointless since he doesn't learn it until after he's married.

I didn't hate it, but it made me really sleepy which is unideal for slowly walking around the map in the early game.

I think the junior team developing it spent so much time and energy on background information and setting detail that they didn't really give the scenario the attention it needed.

The scenario is convoluted and parts of it are inconsequential to the overall story. It's like they wanted to make a sandbox game but made it into a linear experience at the last moment.

I own her figma figure but never got into the series, I just love her design. One of the main reasons I bought her was because she fell inline with the style I dig.

It's entirely your opinion. But Blue Fields is great. One of the best songs in the whole OST. Is it as great as the overworld theme in VII? No. But still one of Uematsu's best songs. Especially the orchestrated version.

Yeah, I actually just went back and listened to it and it wasn't as bad as I originally remembered it, it just too slow and sleepy. It's still not one of my favorites but I wouldn't say it's garbage anymore either.

the sleepiness of it is one of my favorite things about it. i remember being 12 years old back in the early 2000s while my dysfunctional family was going through some rough shit, and i was staying at this like, homeless families/crisis temporary housing, lik a small but nice hotel, and i had my ps2 as the only thing to get my mind off the situation, falling asleep with the controller in my hand while blue fields plays. ffviii was one of the only sources of comfort i had at the time. pretty hard to hear any song from this game without getting emotional. thanksmyblog

Some people prefer those types of songs. They're not intrusive while exploring. Final Fantasy VII's overworld theme is the same "slow" style you're describing. It just picks up with a triumphant mood at the end. Most of it is slow or even kind of eerie.

Blue Fields is just comfy background music. Much like this song, my favorite overworld theme in all of gaming.

I don't see how the writers are to blame for anything. Fact is Quistis is just not suited to any type of leadership role. That doesn't make her a bad person. She'd be a good secretary or assistant. Maybe not a bad councilor for troubled kids.

I'd like everyone to take a moment a consider just how much better the game would have been if Seifer was the prince(ss) instead of Rinoa. Going from hate to tsundere to interest to obsessive. Unique unison attacks like CT's X-strike.
It's not even necessarily a gay thing. Just switching Rinoa and Seifer's personalities would work, too. Compared to the absolute zero interest and chemistry they show towards each other through the game as it is. At least Seifer and Squall had emotions towards one another, even if they were antagonistic at least it's something.

It was more that Quistis was written to be a tutorial character. Most likely in the initial stages of game development, they literally meant for her just to be Squall's teacher. A character who does all the plot exposition and tests in the first half of Disk 1 (which she does). But over time, they developed her into a playable character, while retaining her role.

Despite being mostly useless after the Dollet landing, I think she was handled pretty well. Very rarely do FF games put that much level of development into a secondary character. I mean, Quistis got more than Selphie or Irvine. And they're in the main plot for far longer.
