This. I tried to get into P5 for two years now. I'm at around the 60 hour mark and I can't anymore, it's so bad. I can't even call myself a Persona fan anymore. I didn't think it was possible for that team to make a bad game, but they did and it's all Hashino's fault. The man is not a good writer. He simply doesn't have the skills necessary to write good characters and a competent 100 hour long storyline.

Yeah 5 lacks a lot of shit plotwise, characters like Haru being introduced super late and given 0 development absolutely turns you off. also group interactions compared to 4 fall absolutely short, 4's character interactions were organic and felt human, 5's party lacks a lot of chemistry

I can agree with this. The soundtrack in 5 is so painfully mediocre. There's only about three or so songs that I actually enjoyed from it two of them being battle themes and just one is a dungeon theme. Meanwhile I played through P4G somewhat recently that game definitely had a much more memorable soundtrack, my only real complaint was the reuse of battle themes for the mini-bosses.

It's really fun. The feedback loop is really satisfying and fulfills my autism, and the character interactions are much better than PQ1's.

I still haven't gotten to the P3 cast, but based on what I know, I'm not too far off. Hopefully there's still a good 40 hours left in the game at least, because I'm enjoying it a lot.

They may taking about corruption, but they're afraid to actually do it.

Adachi's interactions with Dojima just give you all the more reason to suspect him. Dude is clearly miserable, making him a likely candidate for being the villain, especially since he doesn't have a social link and isn't killed (again, the only characters who have portraits and DON'T end up dying are either social links or bad guys).

It's more of the same as the first game, so if you liked the dungeon crawling Etrian Odyssey/sub person fusion aspect, you'll like this. Some of the balance changes are welcome (some more than others) to help streamline it and some of the bosses are way harder too.

But there are far too many characters in this game, half of the time I feel like their interactions don't matter because what they say feels inconsequential with having to balance screen time for 3 full casts. The only ones that have anything of substance are the P5 characters because they get a full dungeon to themselves but that doesn't really last past that. I remember people saying that they didn't like the first PQ because the writing reduced the characters down to their most basic traits but I feel that much more in this game compared to the first.

I'm playing on Normal, it's pretty tough but far from unforgiving. I've died a few times and I'm only on the second dungeon, but it's mostly just been carelessness that's killed me. I can only think of one fight that's been, like, annoyingly unfair that I had to retry several times.

Easy is probably better for a casual playthrough unless you're just naturally really good at minmaxing.

The best part is it's not even made by Shoji Meguro. I don't know how Atsushi Kitajoh managed to mimick the sound of Persona 3 through 5's OSTs so fucking well, then BLEND THEM just as well. Dude's a savant, I honestly hope he comes back to work on future games.

P4 is ugly even by PS2 standards. I agree that Vita's screen is wonderful but that's not enough to fix P4's ugliness. Plus they removed the piss filter and made everything bright as shit, killing the atmosphere the original had. The game was supposed to feel retro and, despite being set in 2011, be a mix of '50s-'70s, the piss filter did a great job creating that feeling.

I'm pretty much at the final boss, so I'll give you my thoughts. party for most of the game was akechi/chad thundercock/aigis/naoto/joker

the character writing is a little better, akihiko is still P R O T E I N man though. the main story doesn't have as good of a hook as the first one's.

the gameplay is a bit better. the characters are way more well balanced so naoto doesn't invalidate random encounters for you anymore. you need to think harder in random battles now that there's 2 more elements in play although I wish they brought in gun. I feel like panic got nerfed, it straight up doesn't work on a number of quest/mini/straight up bosses. but between that and binds the shut down game is still too strong especially since there's a party member that has a 2 sp salome's kiss early on. he has shit luck but once he gets bind arts it doesn't matter very much.

character building is a lot more restricted since you don't have skill cards anymore. instead you need to alter their persona's base skill set by consuming a rare consumable and sacrificing a sub-persona.

the dungeons are less interesting thematically but better laid out, the 4th one especially I loved.

I did, and I played P3 before it. It's not a "I'm older now" I started up P3 last week and the design holds up. P4 did as well. There's something hollow about P5 in its design, presentation, overall direction. It's hard to put my finger on, because I like the game, but it doesn't have that pull that either P3 or P4 had.

The characters get a long a little too well. I even had that problem with P4 a bit. The music is really good, but again something lacking. It feels tired. The whole game feels tired. It moves forward but there's no worry. There's no uncertainty.

One thing I really fucking hate though is the way the women act in the game. Take Makoto, like a fucking pussy outside of spikey getup but then she's all I'M GOING TO DESTROY YOU and it's that 180 the female characters have when they suit up that I find grating. Yeah idk, I guess it just comes down to taste. I felt the opposite, I marathoned the game in two weeks flat because the story kept me interested, and I loved the soundtrack (listened to songs on youtube on loop when I wasn't playing the game). The design and presentation kept jumping out at me, I found myself repeatedly saying shit like "that's a great little touch" when going through the menus or watching the battle animations.

I also thought the story was on par with P3 in terms of uncertainty and worry. The only reason I felt more "scared" of P3's story was because I was 13 when I played it, and I can recognize that much. In retrospect I really don't think it was that much more dire than P5's.

What you feel is "all style no substance". The trailers and UI visuals stand out clearly from every other game, and yet the actual in-game visuals use a very generic style. As much as I shit on P4's overly cheery presentation, it doesn't be shy and sticks to it the entire time. P5 is clearly made to aim for the casual audience and its writing suffers for it. You end up with a completely episodic format where one event barely has any cohesion to the next and mainly only exists to show off how "badass" your main characters are. You only realize the full scope right at the very end when the plot is dumped on you all in one go, making the episodic nature of the game pop up even more.

I beat persona Q2, and I thought it was pretty good. Should I go back and play the first one?

I think a lot of the same things you do, in terms of little touches, many elements of the design are well thought out. The characters look great, the animations are fluid.

I would heavily disagree about the plot being on par with P3. I wasn't "scared" of P3 because I wasn't 13 when I played it. Also it wasn't scary. I'm talking about "how the fuck are we going to stop a world destoyer" type uncertainty. It was a very morbid game, with how people wanted to die, wanted the world to end and a being answered. The characters suffered, they were angsty because of what they had lost, what they were losing. Maybe it is preference but I think they pulled that off better. P5 is still a good game, but not once did I feel any weight to the story.

I don't agree about the men in P5 acting like the women. There is a particular edge to the women that I dislike, and I see it enough to recognize a pattern.

This was my fear, as I'm currently in the process of beating it. With P3, Apathy Syndrome was spreading as the game progresses. With P4 a murderer was killing continuously and you had to stop him (from your perspective). With P5....adults are bad. If they had made the "suicides" a more front line of the plot, it might have had weight. But it's just THE SYSTEM MAN SOCIETY type shit over and over again

she was on the back line first time and I had ryuji instead of morgana. I swapped around because I needed more magic damage and the front was process of elimination since I needed 3 up front to mitigate the gatling damage.

the best way I found to do it was to set poison, cast tarunda and rakunda on the carrot that does the single target damage then spam agi on it until it dies, chunk it down as quick as possible so the party doesn't take too much damage. then exploit the ai by stalling out the poison until the fire resist is removed and spam agi on the main body. my main issue was that fire link chunked her hp so hard I could only get away with it after a boost which the gatling carrot would prevent half the time. and if I dedicated morgana to healing her then he would lose out on boosts. in my experience it was way safer to ignore fire link unless I got a boost turn.

When I first played it I was under leveled at either adachi/ameno or kusino cause I spent to much time doing social links and I just ended up replaying the game to beat it. I was on a bus trip though so I might’ve been more motivated with little else to do.

Sae isn't any more or less prevalent in the palace than other villains. She doesn't get a super dramatic cutscene where she forces someone's persona to awaken, I guess, but that's about it.

I feel like you're underselling the dialogue here, the characters repeatedly check up on Makoto and ask her if she's okay. It's not like the game paid zero attention to exploring the relationship between Makoto and Sae during the dungeon's course.

I liked Akechi as a party member, and recognizing that the casino is where shit hits the fan made his new inclusion that much more exciting because I knew what was waiting for me at the end and I was stoked to play through the events leading up to it.

Kamoshida and maybe Kaneshiro are the only two villains that feel particularly "dark".

The ending isn't even remotely whacky, everything from faking Joker's death to Shido's change of heart being covered up by the media to the entire Mementos arc was really dramatic and dark, imo. The game takes itself very seriously in its final moments.

P4 had the same issue. It started off on a somber tone with two murders in a small town and holds a rather low tone until Yukiko's case. Then it drops almost all pretense and the game goes full sunshine and rainbows. What's that, there's a psychotic murderer around? Fuck that, we need to practice for the next few days to play in a concert at Junes. Only towards the end did the game return to the atmosphere the intro had, and even then, it blows it all away with bullshit like Nanako's miraculous revival.

But there's so much of it. Only about 40% of the game is light in tone. Kamoshida starts things off incredibly dark, like you said. Makoto/Kaneshiro arc and Futaba's arc are both extremely dark as well, though. Sae's arc is where the game digs its heels in, getting you caught up on the part of the game where Joker is being beat mercilessly and supposedly murdered, then pushing the dark tone further by teasing this super satisfying defeat of Shido only to pull the rug out from under you and tell you that nobody gives a shit because the media covered up his apology.

I'd say Madarame and Burger King are the only two arcs in the game that are relatively light in tone; quite a lot at stake, as always, and the villain is still reprehensible, but the actual "crime" being committed isn't quite as personal or relateable. But again, I always felt that was kind of the point. I think the story is meant to paint the PTs as losing sight of what they should be doing as the game goes on, culminating in them going for Burger King because the fucking poll on their website told them to (literal popularity contest), which turns out to be a bait placed to ruin their reputation and get Sae hot on their tails. Once shit gets real, it stays real up until the end. The shifts in tone felt organic and well paced to me; Yusuke's arc was the only one that felt a little out of place.

A quick hint but, remember to let the characters handle their own problems.

He's really good and you can see he has talent, but his stuff is hit or miss, this is coming from someone who loves his work on even Trauma Team/New Blood's soundtrack.
