Why is any of that good? I realize there are technical limitations there and thats why it looks like shit at a glance. But the color palette is bland, even the gold and metal looks dull. It looks like all cloth is attached. The armor doesn't look good. Its like it was designed to protect him from overhead attacks only? But not center of mass? Is he a manlet? Are they all? I don't even need realism but just a hint at something that makes sense. For real though the biggest sin is lack of color. Something in that picture should stand out and the only thing that does is the hotbar.

But yeah plate armors of noblemen were decorated with various techniques. Gilding, embossing, engraving, painting and even heating up at the right temperature so the metal catches a nice blue shine.

Demon's Souls, Dark Souls (and Elden Ring apparently) feature beautiful and often functional armors. Fits very nicely into the gritty dark fantasy aesthetic.

It's a rondel (deflective circular metal piece found usually on joints such as armpits and elbows) there to protect the leather straps holding the wrapper across the the lower part of that helmet/armet. The wrapper is usually found on cavalry armors since it protects/slides off blows and holds your neck in place after getting hit with a lance near it. It's basically a miniature version of the lower part of the jousting Frogmouth helmets.

This part evolved alongside the bevor in Italy and was later supplanted by the falling buffe. All neck/jaw armors.

Medieval period goes up to 14/15th century. Where it merges into Renaissance for most European countries.

Heide knights are inspired by the late 13th century/early 14th century armors. Because it consist of a hauberk covered with a surcoat and wearing a templar style heaume. It's very reminiscent of a late crusader or a heraldic knight.
However it also features cuisses, sabatons and greaves from the 14th century. This combination did indeed happen in history because exposed breastplates were a later trend.

The one benefit to the dumbed-down movement mechanics of the sequels is that armor selection mostly didn't matter beyond what you thought looked cool. Why would it be? Sharp blades would be stopped by it just the same. Any tip fine enough to pass between the links, or any thrust strong enough to force the links open would do the same with or without a simple layer of fabric to it. You need multiple layers of fabric to cushion the blows, and stop those fine points.
