Unironically became pretty active thanks to being free
The only catch is you need Blizzard's Battle.net launcher, and the only thing that costs money in game is skins, and Heroes for the game's co-op campaign
Andrew Wilson
honestly surprised that AoE3 has as many players as it does 14 years later, like double that of every arena shooter combined

Age of Empires 2 HD on Steam and on Voobly.com.
Just reinstalled it myself week ago and have been playing it a ton now everyday with other people.
Why would the king of RTS be bots or not popular? Are you insane? It's popular for a reason, it's so fucking GOOD. There's so much depth to AoE2 it's insane, they're finding new strats, new meta is made and shit even today. You have two popular youtubers T90 and Spirit of the Law making AoE2 related videos too that further reinforce community.
It's fucking amazing. Although most of those are playing singleplayer by themselves as weird that might sound, kinda like most people play civilization games alone.
Jackson Jenkins
Would you say it's the most tactical RTS out there?
Josiah Price
It's definitely the most alive tactical RTS to this day that's easy to pick up but hard to master.
Still the basic core of the gameplay is simple rock-paper-scissors and you need to do tons of microing to become really good but there's also more macro aspect than say starcraft.
Mason Foster
What does Yea Forums say about Company of Heroes ? Have bought it on Steam but not touched yet as I'm still working through a lot of other titles.
Haven't played them all but C&C Generals and Dawn of War have a lot of mechanics in them with Dawn of War making use of morale and cover like rarely any other RTS does. It's all about the fan mods though that enhance the basic game far better than the actual devs did it.
Jackson Rogers
*also throwing out a blind *maybe* on Cossacks that I also have bought on Steam but not touched yet. Got that recommended but 0 experience so far.

Only StarCraft. No other RTS is worth playing unless you like pretending that SC has competition. The fact not even the standard QoL features in SC exist in other RTS games to this day is proof of the complete lack of quality RTS devs. AoE is for nostalgia fags it's deprecated trash. Blizzard is cancer but they unknowingly made 2 decent RTS games despite ruining the campaign.
most overrated contrarian game of choice, CoH is to RTS what cinematic games are to action adventure. It plays itself and has barely any options to pull strategy from.

>Only StarCraft. No other RTS is worth playing unless you like pretending that SC has competition.
In what crazy bubble do you live where you think Starcraft is still relevant? Age of Empire will outlive if it hasn't already in terms of sustained popularity SC.
Starcraft is really insane micro game and if it's up someone's alley it's good for that, but AoE is way better RTS in general also nostalgiafags my ass the game has active tournaments and upcoming ''Definitive Edition'' coming for how popular it is, albeit the 3d graphics look like shit and I hope it flops.
AoE definitely has more macro but SC has ever so more micro I'd say.
Adam Wood
How does Red Alert compare to SC and Age of Empire?
Camden Adams
this is neat

Is Fire Emblem considered a rts?
Nathaniel Torres
Red Alert 1 & 2 were vastly different.
RA1:
-no unit veterancy
-flying units not directly targetable by AA units but you have to rely on them auto-targeting the AA units with their AA weapons while standing still
-Allies vs Soviets in a WW2 replacing alternate timeline scenario
-super weapons totally meh and underpowered
-addons improved the game with some fresh mechanics but not enough
RA2:
-unit veterancy: selfhealing for elite units; 1-3 ranks, each rank adds a bit more hp, firepower, improved reload time; elite = new weapon for most units
-flying units and counter units to these as generic part of the game in a variety of ways
-takes place after RA1 but takes itself far less serious
-Allied spies actually functional and useful
-better faction identity with units being more different from another depending on faction
The addon to RA 2 was just kinda meh due to mindcontrol being an annoying gameplay mechanic that basically screams "Instakill me or stay away !!!" while the RA1 addons (and the secret fun missions) were an improvement.
Unqiue to RA compared to the other here named RTS games:
-the unit movement from square to square, meaning you can't instantly make a unit stop or turn but only after it reached the center of the next close square, sometimes providing an enemy the opportunity to finish it off or damage it; on the plus side that system makes unit positioning easier.
-tanks can squish infantry. In RA2 they can even rank up in experience that way.
-while RA1 had silos that limited your amount of credits to pay unit or structure construction with RA2 removed these and thus giant amounts of resources can pile up on the player's account that wouldn't have been possible in RA1 or Tiberiian Dawn
-RA1 AI = bad; RA2 AI = okay
SC: Mostly units and strategy.
Kevin Young
You want proof? I'll show you proof!

A file name if you would.

Red Alert 2 is extremely fast paced. You can reach the end of your tech tree 8 minutes into a match. Units and buildings are in general pretty fragile. Tactics don't evolve a whole lot beyond "Spam" since you don't have any actual info on the stats of your units besides cost.
Jacob Rivera
I'm blind my dear user. I'm sorry but thank you I knew I smelled based afrobull.
I love the way he draws ropes of cum.

While this isn't porn, the artist, methonium, has made hentai doujins. You can find them on n hentai. My personal recommendation is "Ookiku Nattara!"
Kevin Cox
Believe in Blizzard. They will save the RTS genre by hiring devs from the most critically acclaimed games and working on the ultimate crossover real time tactics game that we've always wanted. On top of the amazing gameplay it's going to have sexy characters to reach the same mass appeal Overwatch did.
Ian Reed
Surprised noone mentioned Supreme Commander:Forged Alliance. If you get Forged Alliance Forever, there are still quite a lot of games.
Leo Diaz
Thanks user, would empty my nutsack to obese mango girls now

More micro isn't reducing skill, it just means more tediousness, not necessarily taking away from the other aspects of the game

Increasing the requirements of interacting with units, while preventing the automation of it elsewhere, reduces overall APM and strategy.

Actions per minute simply suggests the intensity, especially according to the playstyle.
Jeremiah Robinson
How's the playerbase for this?
