Yup, German is a mixed bag when it comes to game translations but I've noticed many times the translations being closer to Jap than English.

Link had a ton of personality lost in the localization. In the main quest to save Zelda, he writes that he's having confidence issues but promises to pull through for Zelda, and when he gets the Master Sword, he writes that he hopes Zelda will be proud of him.
