Can someone explain to me how the hell the DOOM canon works?

Can someone explain to me how the hell the DOOM canon works?

Guy fights until his last breath except he can't even die so they just seal him up in a box because they don't want to risk it. They're so afraid they think he'll break out anyways. Which he does, but in return also opens up a portal to Earth.

>company goes to mars to establish a colony and do research, doomguy is hired security
>company finds ancient alien artifacts and starts experimenting
>turns out its not alien stuff but stuff from fucking hell they fuck it up and demons come pouring out they manage to reign it in and take some of the tech back to earth
>experiments continue on earth and mars
>something goes wrong really really wrong and portals to hell have opened up on earth and mars as well as mars' moons
>queue doomguy doing doomguy things

its not exactly rocket science OP.

Yeah except that shits been done before in 1 and 2. and then 3 happens and they're like o wait what is this? Demons? wtf. and then Nu doom happens in Mars which makes no damn sense because 3 already and Resurrection of evil already happened. So either the canon is weird or the UAC somehow forgot that theirs demons on mars NOT 1 NOT 2 BUT THREE FUCKING TIMES???

3 is non cannon and nu-doom is a reboot of 1. nu-doom 2 is a reboot of 2.

Doom 1 and Doom 2 work on the basis of basically this Except by Doom 64, the ending actually involves Doomguy saying "screw it" and staying behind on Hell in order to keep fighting demons for eternity.
In the meantime, Doom 3 happens, with the exact same premise, except the Doomguy in Doom 3 is a different Doomguy than the ones in 1 and 2 and maybe 64.
Fastfoward to this new Doom in 2016, UAC scientists find a goddamn old sarcophagus under every conceivable protection and ward that Hell could put on it, and it is countless thousands of years old, and Doomguy is inside it.

Here's the part where it gets weird, because it's unclear if this newest Doomguy is supposed to be the member of some ancient alien race of a dimension that Hell absorbed in the distant part, as some parts of the lore point to, or if he is LITERALLY the Doomguy from Doom 64, from an alternate version of Earth, and thanks to dimensional and time fuckery involved with the way Hell works, spent an eternity fighting demons in Hell, was eventually sealed for thousands years more, and was THEN found out by scientists from yet ANOTHER alternate dimension version of the UAC.

What about DOOM RPG? Is that canon or nah?

I have absolutely no idea

>Here's the part where it gets weird, because it's unclear if this newest Doomguy is supposed to be the member of some ancient alien race of a dimension that Hell absorbed in the distant part,
supposedly he is an ancient norse bererker somehow related to norse mythology. in the nu-doom 2 trailer you can see odin or thor and some valkyries fucking around. rather than just killing off doomguy odin or thor they actually talk to him.

>giving a shit about Doom """lore"""
Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important.

Tom Hall makes expanded and needless backstory and events for setting of Doom.

Tom Hall gets shitcanned from id with it explained to him that the mindset of story in a game is about as useful as a story in porn.

Doom games are released with a blank player insert and a focus on simply shooting things.

id gets bought by Zenimax. Now we have teh dooomslayerrrrr and a load of story wank.

And that's why you're Zuckerberg's code monkey now, fagit.

I never put much stock in this quote. Carmack made beautiful engines but he wasn't building the levels.

>Norse mythology
fucking yawn

Carmack is why Quake 3 exists in the form it does, that design was his idea. Carmack effectively created THE arena shooter.

Doom 1 and 2 are the same continuity.
Doom 3 is standalone
Doom 2016 is a soft reboot

Which is great. Story can be important though.

Oh yeah, games are just littered with norse mythology.
I mean we got Nu-GoW and...you know, stuff.

He also backpeddled on that quote years later

>someone seals the doom guy
not so op afterall

Hey now they tossed a temple on him

Almost 3 decades later, I realize how correct he was.

>UAC scientists find a goddamn old sarcophagus under every conceivable protection and ward that Hell could put on it, and it is countless thousands of years old, and Doomguy is inside it.
How did they get past all the security and how did time pass so fast?

They fought their way past it.
The Doom Slayer and his civilization of Argent D'nur either predates humanity or there is some time fuckery involved.

>How did they get past all the security
Samuel Hayden and a team of marines [but probably mostly Hayden] murdered absolutely everything that tried to stop them
>how did time pass so fast?
It's Hell, who knows.

>odin
>valkyries

Those are the night sentinels you stupid fag.

nu-doom is the 4th doom and a sequel to 1, 2, and 64. doom eternal is doom 5.

To be fair that was Hell's last resort. They sealed him (by dropping an entire fucking stone temple on him) because they couldn't find a way to kill him
