It's kind of hard to describe for me, but I guess remaining calm and mentally creating the trajectories in my mind and just letting instinct take over from there.
Panic and worry are what usually get me killed if a super tight wave is coming, so I try not to overthink it or get overwhelmed and let my natural reactions take hold so I can analyze the patterns.
I find a large part of it is mental and getting that down makes execution easier.
In a more tactile sense I would say know when to move and not move, sometimes it's best to stand your ground instead of jerking out of the way too soon.
Also make use of vertical movement, sometimes you need to go around bullets and push forward at times to gain better openings.
Don't just dodge but weave through the patterns and find the groove in the waves, every spellcard and phase has a bit of a solution so to speak so look for it as you play.

Because it's non-traditional shmup that doesn't focus on resources and stuff, which tend to be the problem in the series.

GFW is literally the only spinoff with resources

Only beaten in on normal, made it to Remilia on hard like a year ago. Haven’t played since and now I struggle just to get past level 3 on hard. Disappointing to see my skills have faded.

I fucking love 6-8 but could never get into the later ones. The scoring systems get more complicated and there’s just more shit you need to keep track of, the backgrounds got too detailed and fancy and just feel cluttered and distracting compared to the earlier almost zen-like backgrounds. I also prefer the classic bomb system instead of bombs reducing your power. Just preference I guess, but I’m kinda sad I can’t get into the newer ones.

Cho Rensha is lit. Suffers from the usual shmup problem though - later levels seem balanced around you having a bunch of power ups which means once you die and lose everything you’re kinda fucked.

Still really fun.

Anyone played any other good shmups? All I’ve dug into besides touhou and Cho Renshaw are Ikaruga and Mushihimesama. Both rely a bit too much on memorization and ‘knowing the solution’ for my taste, I like how in a lot of touhou games you can just wing it as long as you can quickly recognize patterns. There’s exceptions bit generally you don’t need to memorize much with touhou. I prefer that kinda style but lots of shmups seem too fast for just improvising to work. Anyone know a good game that does this sorta thing?

I haven’t played UFO much so I forgot about that. Maybe I should try getting more into that one. For some reason I still found it more frustrating than 6-8.

Yeah but I can’t stand the backgrounds. There’s a lot more distraction and clutter than in the old ones. Maybe that’s just part of the challenge but eh.

Also I can’t get english patch to work with that one for some reason, so I always have to look shit up to understand what things do and it’s just sort of annoying. There’s a bunch of other weird score and collectibles and stuff and I just prefer a simple clean game.

Also while I’m open to new touhou games I kinda want to branch out some more, play shmups from other series. Unfortunately I’m a retard who can’t figure out MAME so that locks me out of a lot of stuff.

Except DonPachi which works for whatever reason. That one was fun. Never got to try its more famous sequel cause of the MAME shit.

6-8 are charming and nostalgic despite the fucked up proportion. The later games have become modernized especially since DDC but the proportion gets better.
Honestly I prefer the earlier ones but I have no problem with the current ones either.

Yeah I'm using thcrap. Been a while since I tried but looking at it now it seems it makes shortcuts to nonexistent files, and clicking the shortcuts just asks me to insert a disc into the drive. I don't remember if I ever bothered putting a disc in.
Admittedly I have a tendency to give up on these kinds of things pretty fast.

Manga are mostly lore dump where the protags involved in situtation related to Japanese myth but most of the time don't really have anything to do with the main plot, or at least hard to see. In other words, it's just episodic thing. Plot relevant stuff or something interesting for that matter only happen occassionaly, that's why people say they are boring.

SSiB is the only one that's more plot heavy and FS is the one that's more interesting to me because it shows Gensokyo's darker side. However, manga endings tend to be sucked.

You say that but level 1 power and full power dont actually have that much difference in attack power. Plus the game has a ton of power ups so getting back to full power, or even just stage 3 power which is just as good is easy.

Not him, but I lunatic cleared 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 13. Clearing each game on normal was more consistently fun. I did have a lot of fun doing the lunatic clears, and the high points were definitely much higher than anything normal gave me, there was a lot of frustration too, and putting some of the spellcards to memory felt like hollow victories compared to blasting through the game blind, not knowing what'll come next and needing to wing it.
