No, the orphanage thing is dumb and unnecessary and the time kompression is shoe horned into the plot. There isn't enough of a connection between Ultimecia and Squall, specifically her desire to conquer the past and future and Squall's hiding from the past and fear of the future. The pieces are there but the story needs some additional work to weave it all together.

It wasn't really complex. It's just that a lot got lost in translation. FFVIIII had one of the worst localizations of any FF. "Sis Ellone! Sis Ellone!" God that was so fucking terrible. And the scene where Seifer joins Edea in the TV studio was so butchered it was hard to tell what the fuck was happening. It sounded like his personality just did a 180 because he popped a mentos. They really needed to do a second-edit over that entire translation before releasing it.

Give Ultimecia some more backstory. Have her motivations mirror Squall's. Utlimecia feels trapped by time and so should Squall.

FFVIII is a lot more liked now than it was back in 1999 or whenever. The reception in the US was not favorable. It sold well because it was on FFVII's heels, and the PS2 didn't have the buffet of games that modern consoles have. FFIX pretty much flopped because of the stigma caused by FFVIII which is pretty funny because FFIX was really one of the most flawless executions that Square did (this was the last game Square did, as well). It's only major flaw was that fucking card game. But compared to Triple Triad, no card game ever stood a chance anyway so they probably phoned it in.

While I agree with you about the ending and personally ranking 8 the second best final fantasy myself, the ending is meant to signify that their actions had lasting consequences on the world. Nature won in the end and cloud and his gang made it possible, it's very likely in that cutscene they were all dead by that point.

The junction system is fixed by merging it with the materia system and removing draw completely. All drawn GFs become new dungeons and card mod turns items into AP for specific materia. For example, dino bones give AP to gravity materia.

Rinoa being Ultimecia is the one thing that would make that snorefest of a story unique.

Removing junctioning would require you to include all new armor and weapons in the game. How Squall learns limit breaks would need to be reworked. Here's a better solution

In the original game some abilities are locked behind levels but the only one that matters is ammo-RF on Ifrit (pic related) and you can get it with Seifer during the Dollet mission. The solution is to force players to gain some levels to get the better abilities. For example, if Ifrit's HP-J wasn't learned until he reached level 10 that would make a no-level run more of a challenge.
