What makes a game "pretentious"?

lead dev or main character is not a white guy

Overrated game in a shitty genre with an insufferable fanbase

pretends to be something it's not

this too

Starting with a quote

False advertising through shameless clickbait ads and outrage marketing

>no easy mode
>doesn't respect the player
>abelist

Are you a giiirl?

Rubbing a message in your face, I guess.

Or when the main brain behind the idea says a bunch of things that the game "strives for", but it's a buncha bullshit that either doesn't happen or contradicts what they say.

Games Creator acts like they're better than you

>"strives for"

If 1 important character is LGBT, isn’t white, or is a woman, it’s “pretentious” and “forced diversity”.

No, just telling you what a game can do to be pretentious

That Dragon Cancer and YIIK are the best examples of pretentious games.

They try to put their "ethics" into you.

If by “ethics” you mean penis, no they really don’t

Game came out after 2010, got popular quickly and has some kind of story

Ethics just means anything that doesn’t excite your microdick to you, dude.

I don't think he meant that, m8

Tries to sell itself more as an experience than as a game that's actually fun to play

It’s definitely what he meant. As we all know, gamers can’t think with anything other than their penis and nostalgia.

I just wonder what Ganon's up to!

The majority of western AAA video games these days are extremely pretentious, e.g. RDR2, Uncharted, Last Of Us, AssCreed.

I don't care if you disagree, it's a case of you either see it or you don't.

What's a game that has excellent gameplay but is still pretentious?

Or is that an oxymoron?

Pretentious is broadly used to mean works of art or fiction that claim to be or present themselves as being more important than they are. Some indie games are pretentious because they suffer from the developers' narcissistic fantasies.

>What makes a game "pretentious"?
When it tries to act like it's not a video game. Or when the dev thinks they're better than the medium they're producing content in.

all indie walking simulators that use shitty sad guitar soundtracks and try to be philosophical

Undertale

>What's a game that has excellent gameplay but is still pretentious?
Doesn't exist.

The most pretentious bullshit is that flash game One Chance.

the one that only lets you play it once unless you go in and delete the cookies it infects you with.

Correct answer right here.

If its made by Jonathan Blow

A game that isn't challenging and tries to sell you on its convoluted story and art style.

Pretends it's deeper than it actually is, usually by rubbing a message in your face.

*gives you game to the pope*

When there's a "moral" to the story but the story itself lacks substance.
That's how I define it anyways, most people just think "art" games are pretentious.

when i dont like it

>Games that tries to moralize you
This often happens to indie games.

These guys are a pretty good illustrative example. They made walking simulator games and to make sure you knew how fucking smart they were they'd always leave the classic literature they made you read in high school lying around.

Main character is a lesbian
Game has 10 or more minutes of cinematics each time you do something.

>Games:I think this is bad
>”AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH STOP STOP STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP”

I feel that the dragon cancer gamer is meh, because is based in a true story and the baby for the dev is dead now

Bioshock Infinite

I hate westerners who try so hard to pass vidya as "art." At least the Japs know that videogames are just a form of entertainment and they put generic garbage, just to make them nice. They think on their customers instead of trying to pass their shit as "art".

>creates your game

This
I remember playing the special edition of Bioshock and it had a "museum" special feature. You could see all of the scrapped enemy designs and some story concepts. It was all WAY more interesting than what's actually in the game. It had quotes from developers saying stuff like "as much as we liked this design, it felt too scoobydoo-ish, zo we decided to go with a more grounded approach, which we found to be much scarier."
Translation: "we weere too lazy to model a splicer/sea creature enemy, so we decided to go with the same two humanoid models and called it a day"

>Exaggereting

Watching them have their meltdown in the end was a satisfying conclusion, watching the mask break on these kind of people is a sight to see.

>That Dragon Cancer
Eh, I agree. But at the same time, quite a few loved ones of mine had cancer (One died, the other had it twice and was on death's door, and the other miraculously had it removed), so I can kinda feel for the dev. Fuck cancer.

Now YIIK? Fuck that game. It's only good for being laughed at.

how do you know when a game is pretending

>Dude robots are people too lmao

Attached: NieR-Automata-Game-of-the-YoRHa-Edition-752685-Detail.jpg (800x1004, 592K)

YIIK

game tries to use a mechanic/style/topic without fully understanding it, and acts smart by doing so.
example: cuphead.

I'm so fucking disconnected from pop culture my boyfriend jokes that I sat in a room eating saltines until I met him and I still understood that reference

How the fuck are you going to try to up your artfag cred by pretending not to get a Rocky reference

When they emphazise story/plot over gameplay (i.e. pretending to be a movie/TV series)

Attached: VinnieMP1.jpg (210x240, 5K)

Made by Kojima

Over the top plot, that the devs have to remind you how deep it is.

When it tries to shoe horn in a political message (regardless of which way it leans) where it isn't necessary for the story or game or tries to make a bland ass inclusive character purely for good boy points rather than making the character actually good. I don't give a shit about your tongue in cheek [insert political figure here] stand in being made a fool of or if your NPC is a gay otherkin with headmates. I don't want you to try and mold my political or worldly beliefs, I want you to make me a good fucking game so I can shut the world out for a bit.

Attached: IMG_1959.png (521x515, 169K)

>what triggers you
>60 replies
They do it out of spite, but playing the game anyway is next level. If you cant boomer smile at gay bullshit you're not an adult.

But YIIK is the definitive pretentious game

How do you know that a farmer is pretending to sell you a donkey instead of a horse? You look at the animal.

A poor analogy does not explain how a consumer determines whether a dev is “pretending.” I think you’re simply presenting your problematic perception of the world as some pseudo intellectual fact.

Probably one of the least pretentious games that are always called pretentious.

And I think you're retarded, if I advertise my game as something and it ends up being something completely different it's pretty fair to say the customer has been tricked.
If you tell me your game is an in depth look at war and its consequences, only to have me mow down millions of people then say "killing = bad" in the last cutscene not only did you inflate your description of your story to make yourself seem smarter you also just come off as lazy and arrogant.

What wad that one walking sim where you go through a house and it was full of philosophy books. Everyone shit on it then the "dev" went on a rampage saying everyone doesnt understand it.

YIIK, made worse by the dev being a smartass post-release.

i mean, they probably literally modeled them if they had an in game museum feature to show you them bruv but i get what you're saying

If reddit adores it

Guilt tripping you on choices.

A game is pretentious when the developer tries to make something that's not a game first, but some bullshit art without a fail condition.

No one at Nintendo, Capcom, Namco, Konami, SEGA, or Square Enix is white. I think you mean the other way around, such as walking sims that are in fact made by white guys.

Yoko Taro

It tries to be more than a game. It forces some kind of message or tries to give you something to "take away" from the experience. But its like— bro I'm still gonna take away something from your game at the end of the day. Why are you doing this?
By trying to be more than a game, it ultimately end up less like a game and more like nothing else.
You are a game. Fuck off.

But also, narcissistic self important creators make a game pretentious, ie YIIK

Bloodborne.
its a fantastic game, but i fucking hate the half baked """lore"""" and worlbuilding through vague item descriptions.

>a game about the power of friendship and love saving the day is pretentious

Trying to be all 2deep and emotional without any buildup, clues or context as to what the fuck is going on. Barely any gameplay. Alternatively, just acting like it's 200 IQ high art when it's anything but that, most recent example being YIIK. If Silent Hill 2 was just you killing Mary and then committing suicide, it'd be the first option.
