2: You can make use of a contactless voltage tester to verify that the power has indeed been shutoff from the socket.

Turn off the sockets on your fuse box. I'm pretty sure every house has a fuse box where you can turn off socket circuits, lighting circuits, etc.

And after doing that, if you're still afraid, get something insulating before you grab the thing to pull it out. Like a towel, or some sort of plastic grabber or something.

This, I know you already solved your issue, but when in doubt concerning electricity, always turn the breaker off, better safe than your body being found after shitting yourself and burning to a crisp.

Give it a good kick with running momentum.
That way if it wants to shock you to death, since you're in momentum you won't be killed and the shock will barely even effect you.
