Aside from the first few minutes of a race when everyone is clustered together, the items actually feel almost like a non-factor. Once I've pulled away from the rest of the racers, nothing can really touch me. Clocks screw everyone equally and warp orbs take too long to reach you if you are actually moving along. The only way items actually have an impact, is if they are being used by someone who can actually back them up with skills. Like someone has to actually catch up and then, start missiling the guy in first in order to over-take, instead of MK where you just throw red shells from literally anywhere on the track and they auto-home in on the guy from anywhere.

Doesn't do much against a barrage of homing missiles that stop me in my tracks for at least 3 seconds. On the Nitro Fueled hud (the one with the larger end) there's a line before the end that shows the "perfect" range. You wanna hit the boost as soon as you hit that line to activate the next boost quickly and store more reserves. Many successive boosts, powerslide or hang time, will maintain your reserves longer.

The best way I've found is to hit the boost pad before that jump and maintain your boost speed till you get there. If you drop your speed at any point you won't make it.

Taking me forever to get used to the drift mechanic compared to MK series. Hitting the turn at the last bit of the hop to minimize the amount my steering angle changes before the drift engages, as well as aiming off-center as I start it to further myself from the wall as I drift back towards it. Do I always aim for lvl3 boost?

Use whatever characters you like, though I suggest all rounder or acceleration. Just focus on getting the hang of the angles you want to take when drifting, and the timing you need for the perfect boost - try and develop some muscle memory.

Maybe it'd help to practice in time trial mode, so you don't have opponents distracting you from driving properly and overwhelming you with more than you can learn to deal with at once.

It's the U-turn mechanic from CNK, which was fucking broken and feels amazing to use on speed characters

You can get a full boost meter at the start by constantly pressing and releasing the acceleration button. You'll learn the timing eventually.
