Imagine control points where each team as a small army and the base is expandable.
You can sneak in the enemy base and steal some intel to weaken the enemy defense, have a payload bomb to be sent to destroy the walls and points to take over certain parts of the base.

Including competitive didn't even affect pubs, you could argue the change from ad-hoc connections to the game coordinator in pubs was a "because of comp", but they could have kept the game coordinator only for ranked if they wanted to. They just thought since other games do it, tf2 should as well.
