If the man was this anxious about the language/regional barrier, I don't think he'd risk any issues from said barrier with the majority of the DLC especially given they have a fixed deadline.
Its not just the musician either, Sakurai tries to get full contact and communication with the owners as much as possible to make sure he's treating the character justice and gets as much consent regarding making any changes for the character for Smash's gameplay.

They like Minecraft and have some nostalgic affection towards Crash and Banjo, but that's kinda it. A lot of the popular western characters we circle jerk about like Lara Croft, Rayman, Doom Slayer, Master Chief, etc are basically no-names in Japan. Then you have Mortal Kombat which straight up does not exist there.
Don't forget Samus as well. We need to have three female characters in Smash with beauty marks on the lower side of their face.

Lloyd is comparable to Cloud in that Symphonia was a lot of people's first Tales game (and also the first 3D Tales game) so people have fond memories of it. I'm not the biggest fan of fighting game characters actually being in Smash, because to me the whole appeal of Smash is getting to play as characters who normally wouldn't be in fighting games, or even action games really, in a fighting game. I feel like a fighting game character is a wasted pick because you already know how they're going to play and you can just play their actual game to play them.
