They are different things, when you chose to play as a female character people will call you a fag, the levels of faggotry will depend on how much you have to roleplay, in a game like monster hunter for example, you just kill monsters, but on games like mass effect where you can actually date people I think its a bit more gay, but I don't get why anons get triggered by it.
When the main character is a girl and you're forced to play with her I can see why someone would get pissed, but desu I've never seen anyone complaining about it, even when the main character is not particularly hot or cute like on ff6. I guess it only if the game is good or not.
