The studio was hired to completely retranslate the Japanese text, so if they kept lines like "I'm so fucked up" that they clearly did not translate themselves, they would risk being accused of plagiarism and breaching contract

They also went from "mustn't run away" to "don't run away" which maybe is fine but "mustn't run away" is pretty much what everyone think of when they think of Shinji that it's weird to just not keep it.

It's a new translation alltogether. "Mustn't run away" is already a weird as fuck way to translate that line. If they kept it, they run the risk of breaching contract by just copying the old script, and potentially opening up lawsuits

"I'm the lowest of the low" is a pretty poor choice. "I'm the worst" "I hate myself" "I'm so awful" "I'm a piece of shit" "fuuuuuuck" "I'm disgusting" these are all better options than what sounds like cheesy Saturday morning cartoon dialogue. In fact I'm pretty sure Ash described team rocket as "the lowest of the low" in the first season of English Pokemon.
