His outfit is just dark and the hair doesn't have that big spike. Him, Barret, and Aeris are the most faithful designs to the original.

Sunglasses are dumb because they hide Barrets eyes, which are key (especially since he's black, so it's harder to read small nuisances on the rest of the face)

Really hard to make a bad character design change INTENTIONALLY.
That's why Tifa's is obvious as fuck. Not even her AC/KH skins are bad. Recall that Tifa also wore cowboy attire. None of them were intentionally made to piss off fans. This new one is because TIFA BAD CENSORSHIP GOOD.
Cloud has a lot of designs yet none were intentionally made to make him look bad.
Barret, Cid, Vincent are the same
How about Red XIII and Caith Sith. Will most likely take the same approach.
