The fact that so many books still name Ocarina of Time as "the greatest or most significant video game or most influential" ever only tells you how far video gaming still is from becoming a serious art. Music critics have long recognized that the greatest of all times are Captain Beefheart and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Film critics rank the highly controversial 2001: A Space Odyssey over the Avengers which was highly popular in theaters around the world. Video gaming critics are still blinded by commercial success. OoT sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Music critics grow up listening to a lot of music of the past, film critics grow up listening to a lot of classic film of the past. Video gaming critics are often totally ignorant of the video games of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the OoT did anything worthy of being saved.

Shut the fuck up zoomer

>OoT sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way),
So what you're saying is that they're not actually basing it on commercial success and more that it defined how we interact with a three dimensional space in video games?

OoT did something that a lot of potential 'best games ever' didn't do; which was really helped it permeate the zeitgeist. It continued a longstanding franchise, brought it into the third dimension, on a new (pretty unproven) console, while innovating the gameplay, at a time where it could speak to fans of an older generation as well as a younger one, stiking tones of 'epic adventure' 'serene atmosphere' and 'nostalgia', all while ending up being an at least okay game.
Not too many games can compare in that sense. Not Deus Ex, not any of those "Citizen Cane of gaming" pieces of shit. Maybe Final Fantasy 7?

But there is nothing that comes close to OoT in terms of art? The way it combines story with gameplay (time travel being a direct gameplay tool) and even MUSIC with gameplay, and just how AMAZING the music and atmosphere is.

You are a zoomer ,aren't you?

Why would you make an argument, and destroy it in the same paragraph?
Does your time has such little value to you user?

Congrats for taking that long for figure out that this is bait.

who's the girl?

Art is for losers. Keep artfags away from my videogames.

reminder that the day video games are considered art will be the death of video games

Majora's Mask is superior.

To all the newfags in this thread, OP’s post is a copypasta which was originally about The Beatles.

OP has successfully baited you all because thats a pasta from a very quoted criticism about the beatles regarding rock music becoming a properly serious, valuable music genre.

Are you telling me that old academics who have never played a video game don't know anything about video games other than sales figures? Whoa...

...

who dis

Final Fantasy VII is the best game ever made and the best game it is possible to make. Better than a shitty game about a musical elf. They can't be compared.
