Having all the young people in town settle down and get married over the course of the game really helped sell the notion that the town was growing up alongside your farm. It's part of what contributed to the great atmosphere of the early Harvest Moon games. I haven't played any of the modern Story of Seasons games, but I can't imagine how artificial it'd be in no one in town had any significant life changes after years of playing.

Story of Seasons:Trio of Towns is pretty good other than the lack of rival marriages. Animal Parade was pretty decent but it's stuck on the Wii and of course some people will swear by the original HM or Friends of Mineral Town. There's also Rune Factory 4 which is from the fantasy spinoff and it's pretty great if you can deal with more anime cliches.
