Breath of the Wild & Skyrim

How old are you? It matters because depending on your age, you will view this game as either a simplistic FPS or one of the most revolutionary games in the history of video games.
I'm guessing you're under 25.
Also go fuck yourself.

Attached: 1516525448012.jpg (499x449, 55K)

I'm 27, go ahead and name one thing that Half Life 2 revolutionized and before you say physics puzzles I'd like to remind you that gimmick is dead because it's shit.

Storytelling in FPS games

The entire Smash Bros saga

trolling

humanity in NPCs; facial animations, reactions to things, in game conversions, etc

revolutionary =/= good

Great, so we now know who to blame for every fucking FPS wanting to be a goddamn movie

Deus Ex came out 4 years before Half Life 2 and has a way better story than Half Life 2 has.

Your favorite

Storytelling as in the way the story is told brainlet

Physics interaction with the environment that wasn't just for show, non cutscene based story telling, blending horror with fps are a few things I can name.

did some youtube eceleb make a video about this? why are people making daily anti HL2 threads?

Battlefield Earth in video game form is apparently good because muh environmental storytelling. Also because zoomers like you were too young to play System Shock 2.

Doesn't sound like you're saying I'm wrong though

>the last good FPS to cone out
>overrated

Yes, anything japanese

just because it was "revolutionary" doesn't mean it's actually a fun game to play in modern times
the most fun thing was the physics engine, which is totally broken and has insane exploits

Half Life 1 already did unskipping scripted pseudo-cutscenes, what did Half Life 2 do, you're going to have to be more specific.

Attached: 220px-Half-Life_Cover_Art.jpg (220x315, 33K)

unskippable*

Name a better single player fps since then

Attached: james_point3.jpg (723x528, 101K)

Game was mediocre but the Source Engine mods made it worth it.
I think of HL 2 as a glorified tech demo.

It was revolutionary in a great way you disabled piece of shit. the storytelling is extraordinary, the technology behind it was fucking bleeding edge at the time.

Half-Life 1 barely has any story at all, HL2 was the progenitor of the "cinematic experience"

Halo 3

MGS3

>What ifu I copy Jamesu Bondu?
OMG KOJIMA YOU GENIUS

Halo 2 is more like modern games than Half Life 2 is in that sense and came out first.

I feel like the Havok Physics was way better implemented into Source than it was in the Creation/Gamebyro engine.

Half Life 2: Episode 1
Half Life 2: Episode 2
easy

Vampires the Masquerade Bloodlines, where that actually mattered, used the Source engine first.

HL2 would be better if it didn't keep locking you into room to listen to pointless exposition just so they could show off the tech.

Shitting on HL2 is a good litmus test for how much of a fucking zoomer fag pleb one is. You must be 18 years or older to post on this board.

The music, characters, atmosphere, story, sound design, visual design, pacing, and level design are all fucking amazing and cohesive. Not every game has to be enjoyable for the exact same fucking reasons.
Name a game that's more holistic and has a better flow. You can't. Just because there are one or two things about it that aren't as impressive as they were at release doesn't make it any less of a game. HL2 doesn't just have soul, it *is* soul.

>Name a game that's more holistic and has a better flow. You can't.
RE4.

>Shitting on HL2 is a good litmus test for how much of a fucking zoomer fag pleb one is.
Based

Except those escort missions fuck everything up, unlike the segments with Alyx where the AI is actually well written.

HalfLife2 is very overrated but it's still good.
Ocarina of Time, Fallout3, every Naughty Dog except for Jak and Daxter, every Square Enix JRPG other than Secret of Mana, FF9, and Chrono Trigger, and every Diablo game are more overrated.
HalfLife1 already did that though and did it better.

None, it was really just a cope for PC fags who missed out on the greatest 3d console generation.

The entire "characters walking while giving you dialogue sections that you can't skip" started with HL2.

literally the first thing that happens in half life 1 is an unskippable tram ride pseudo cutscene

It's a "fine" game, I'd play it before I ever played something like... Timeshift ever again, but I'm not going to put it above Metroid Prime 2 or Fear in terms of decency. It's nowhere near DOOM, Duke or even the original Half Life in terms of great though.

Shut the fuck up zoomer

>Storytelling in FPS games
IMO the worst thing to ever happen to them. What a waste of fucking time. What happened to telling the story WITH the game instead of stopping for it?

Attached: sanic_wry.png (172x166, 34K)

Super Metroid.

Metal Gear Solid 5

im not a big Square fan but what did Secret of Mana do so much more right than any of their other games and Chrono Trigger? ive only played X, XII and XV

HL1 is a better game in every way.

Half Life 1.

Not the physics puzzles, but the physics themselves are used in meaningful way all the time. Gravity gun is still one of the most innovative weapon in any video games, and it's only works because of its physics.

Why do VaIvedrones pretend that Half life 2 was the first game with meaningful physics gameplay?

Dark souls

Well said

Fuck off molyneux

San Andreas.

Basically anything with Nintendo
Metal Gear Solid games
Sonic games
World of Warcraft

Why do you keep making this same thread all the time, op? Gaben hurt you or something?

Anti valve fags are cringe. Get it over doom clones are boring.

I'm 26 and valve has never made a good game. Ever.

Ok zoomer

Deus Ex is not an fps

no

I still fucking hate this game because it's thanks to this piece of shit that we have video games and I fucking hate video games. Also because video games exist we have this fucking board full of retards who probably think this is loss.

Attached: Screenshot_20190621-211301.jpg (1440x1046, 41K)

The fuck happened to Yea Forums? Posting a thread like this a few years back would be just be bait

Yes.

Attached: Pic very related.jpg (1280x720, 78K)

I'm 18, I bought HL1 and 2 when I was like 15 and I liked it. First time I genuinely enjoyed an FPS.

This is still probably one of the lamest and most overrated games ever. All you do is stack blocks so you can make other blocks disappear. How the fuck could anyone find that entertaining?

Attached: Screenshot_20190621-212714.jpg (1440x689, 219K)

What counts as overrated?

Half Life 2 fans were fucking annoying for like 5 years, but that's long since past and every one I know has since had every shred of enthusiasm they had for Valve and the series sucked out of them, to the point they see only flaws.

zoom zoom

I will never understand this "RE4 has bad escort missions" meme. Ashley stays behind you, ducks when you aim, and you can lock her in a dumpster if all else fails.

Maybe they played the Wii version, where there's a 50/50 chance she'll duck, equally large chance she'll run straight into your shotgun and get instakilled.

Ocarina of Time is the most overrated game in history.

Skyrim
DOTA
LoL
WoW
Fortnite
FF7
Smash Bros
MechWarrior

HL2, compared to these, is nowhere near overrated

I know this has to be bait, but for a second you got me.

> people bitching about escorting Ashley
Hello, I would like to introduce you all to a game that had escort missions that WERE legitimately fucking awful.

Attached: Brute_Force_Coverart.png (220x312, 159K)

>goalposts
he proved you fucking wrong.

It doesnt matter if HURR STORYTELLING IN FPS SUCKS. HL2 revolutionized it. Stop coping. Apologize.

>What happened to telling the story WITH the game instead of stopping for it?
...That's your argument against Half-Life 2 of all games? That Half-Life 2 doesn't have enough environmental storytelling?

Attached: Docks_overview.jpg (1263x720, 614K)

Spoken like a true patriot

Attached: thank you.gif (718x404, 3.86M)

>zoomer pretending to be a boomer
HL2 is overrated as fuck, the only really good part of the game is ravenholm, after that it's just one vehicle segment after another until the end.

>Not every game has to be enjoyable for the exact same fucking reasons.

Yea Forums doesn't understand this and literally thinks that the quality of a game is determined by how closely it resembles Dark Souls.

That's why Yea Forums hates everything that's in first-person.

zoomers unite

Of the two long vehicle segments, one is before and one is after Ravenholm.

Doom. It really is that simple.

Attached: 1560531195899.jpg (640x295, 65K)

Facial animations dont add much to gameplay, reactions to things are simplistic when compared to hl1, in game conversations were only between npcs. The only times they do interact with you is when they mention you, look at you, and go back to talking among themselves
Some physics are good but when its forced on you too much, especially with puzzles, then it gets obnoxious. And fps games after never had as indepth physics so it never influenced anything with it. Hl1 already did no cutscenes and plenty others. Cutscenes wouldve been better cause you can skip those. Ss2 already did horror fps
Its environmental story telling. Even if you, yourself, can barely call that a story. its better than forced in your face story
You cant seriously defend the pacing when the airboat section happens nearly right after the 30+ minute walking and standing around at the start
I dont care if you love the game, i just want to be convinced not to hate it

half life series is a meme, nobody has actually played or enjoyed them unironically

Can we agree that episode 2 was peak half life?

required internet access :^)

Half life 2* that is

Zelda BOTW
Persona 5

It's funny how the highest quality model of Gordon Freeman to date is in FFXV

Attached: FFXVWE_steam_bonus_beauty_shot.jpg (1200x675, 223K)

I don't think it's overrated because it definitely had a major impact, it just hasn't aged well in many ways. HL2 is worth playing because the atmosphere, worldbuilding and environmental storytelling are great, not because the gameplay holds up 100% of the time.

>shooting is somewhat mediocre
this is partly because half the weapons available don't feel powerful thanks to weak sound design/visual feedback and bullet-sponge enemies who barely seem to react to taking the majority of a mag's worth of 4.6x30mm to the chest. The pulse rifle, SPAS, magnum and shotgun kick ass but the rest of your choices are pretty lacking.

>game often devolves into a physics engine demo
I get that the point of puzzles is to provide breathing room between action sequences, but many of them feel redundant and contrived. In a game that values worldbuilding as much as HL2 does, you should be giving me convincing reasons for me to be doing what I'm doing or it breaks my immersion.

I'd argue that HL2 isn't even the best way to experience HL2-style gameplay, not only do the episodes play better but there's also millions of quality mods that blow the base game away in terms of gameplay, map design, visuals, etc. Having said this, sequences like crossing the railroad bridge, Nova Prospekt and the battle for City 17 are still tight as fuck to this day and are definitely worth playing through.

DOOM

Attached: 1309899285001.jpg (785x731, 101K)

I don't remember any escort missions from that game. There was a section where you escort some dude but that was the last five minutes of the actual level.

Fallout New Vegas
An average game at best shilled to death on Yea Forums

boomers are quite easy to bait

>Storytelling in FPS games

Fully modeled

Attached: 1536216520944.jpg (703x1025, 120K)

BOTW yes, but Skyrim isn't highly rated, just popular.

>Storytelling in FPS games
Quake and Doom already existed, though. Just because Gabe shat the concept up doesn't mean he innovated.

tf2

It got 95 on metacritic you doofus

Are you talking about cutscenes or something? You're choosing the wrong game to rib on if that's the case here.

>storytelling
>quake and doom
I don't think "are you a bad enough dude to shoot the demons" can be considered storytelling in any respect.
