Activision got too greedy thinking it could be their next cash cow. Fact is, while not exactly niche, rhythm games could never become showstoppers. They, specially Guitar Hero and its ripoffs, required a lot of skill.
If they were budgeted and marketed more like fighting games we might still have them today. But trying to make these skill-heavy games mainstream couldn't last. The business model couldn't sustain itself.

I saw Primus by themselves and Slayer with LoG, Testament, Anthrax and Behemoth last year. Was hoping to find something else but hardly any metal bands come to Louisiana and all the dadrock bands cost too much. Not to mention my car kinda ran shitty after the 5 hour trip coming from Slayer.
