Up until somewhat recently I considered myself a pokemon fan since I was a kid. I think ORAS was when the cracks started to show for me, didn't even bother finishing it because it nearly put me to sleep halfway through. Still tried SM and still found them bad, but the weird thing is they also made retroactively think less of the previous games that I liked. I thought about the main shit I didn't like and realized it applied to a lot of the previous games too. Haven't cared about the series since, now I just laugh at them when they fuck something up.

It's a pretty rough topic to approach because the Pokemon fandom is such a broad group of people. Being in the Pokemon fandom nowadays is just being a fan of Monster breeding games in general.
I still consider myself a Pokemon fan even though I haven't bought a new game since B&W. What keeps me involved in the "community"? Nuzlockes. Fangames. Romhacks. Other series that are very similar to Pokemon.
Once something else comes along with better features that still appeals to the "Collect and battle monsters" part of my mind, I'll move on to that. When Sun & moon came out, I spent months playing Digimon Cybersleuths instead. I played Monster Rancher DS when X and Y were out, and right now I'm playing through the Dragon upstairs Monsters series.

This results in people willing to make up any excuse possible to defend the dumpster fire that is Sword and Shield. I used to be like this but luckily I got into other games when I was in my early teens and can see Gamefreak for what it really is, but those who aren't so lucky wind up like the bootlickers you see on Twitter and /vp/ who try to pretend Gamefreak isn't sitting on literal tens of billions.

/vp/ has slowly grown to hate Gamefreak game by game since ORAS. I give XY a break since it was the first 3D main game and came after Gen 5 which was excellent, but they've really squandered whatever goodwill I've had for the series. I expected another mediocre game like SM at worst for SWSH but they've outdone themselves this E3
