Thief

You can get all three thief games for $1 USD (One Dollar) each on Steam right now. Why the fuck haven't you played it yet?

Because the gameplay looks clunky and boring as fuck, literally:

>face or avoid guards
>leave the area
>repeat till you beat the game

wow you verbally reduced a stealth video game to its basic elements, which somehow means it's boring! Clearly the level-design, stealth mechanics, lore, visuals are absolutely aren't worth bringing up because this user can identify that you steal things in a game called "Thief"! Incredible!

it's a bit tedious, you have to walk very slowly and hide and wait, and hide some more

But I have and I'm currently playing through Deadly Shadow, user.

Overrated game

black parade WHEN?

Patently false. The impeccable level design and variety of tools at your disposal means that there is never a moment in Thief where your only option is to hide and wait. You're just bad at the game unfortunately :)

2>1

This year or next at worst. The Devs said they are still working on it but a lot slowly then before.

>fps

wtf I hate gaming now.

>you play the video game wrong
so you need a 200 iq to play this game?

Don't bother if you're sub-350.

No, anything above 83 should do it. Unfortunately that still leaves you shit out of luck.

games these days are nothing but cutscenes, can't jump, takes control away from you, have some hollywood hack to drive sales, aim for you and keep tapping x to win fights it's 1v10.

no thanks i'll play thief

>so you need a 200 iq to play this game?
unironically yes

damn, it's like the rick and morty of video games

>load into world
>have to make sure moodlets are filled
>gameplay is open-ended and doesn't have a defined goal.
>Challenges occur randomly based on lifestyle, like relationships, skills, jobs, etc.
Wtf, life is boring and pointless

Chaos Theory is better

The Dark Mod has one tough I don't know how far it's come by now.
github.com/fholger/thedarkmodvr

I play Thief 1 and 2 all the time, get out of my face jerk

They just don't make 'em like they used to. These games are amazingly immersive, and have some of the best level design in any game. I even love Deadly Shadows, yeah it's not perfect but there was some really cool ideas and the story is a perfect ending to the trilogy.

Dishonored is great too, and comes close to scratching that same itch, but not quite.

God, I fucking hate cinematic takedowns so much.

Do you think I'd get in a ton of shit from Eidos if I made a Thief 2 ripoff?

>I even love Deadly Shadows, yeah it's not perfect but there was some really cool ideas and the story is a perfect ending to the trilogy.
Honestly I've been so abused by sequels to my favorite media at this point that it really puts DS in a better light. A lot of it was fucked but they did somewhat invoke the atmosphere in places, we got to see the Keeper sanctum and follow that lore for the first time, and it all book-ended nicely for Garrett and the City.

considering arkane did it just fine..

>better than most
>most
It's still the best stealth game, and arguable the best game ever made.

btw.
Play Plague Tale. Not really a Thief experience, but still an amazing game with stealth elements. Solid 8/10

Plague Tale looks how I want a modern Thief game to look. It has great art design.

Actually the best stealth game is Skyrim.
Buy Skyrim.

i really like the level design but the gameplay feels off desu
its still not better than metal gear

Looks cool, I've never heard of it. Kinda afraid of some reviews calling it story driven though.

Agreed. They managed to shed more light on Garrett's character without completely butchering him or coming across like fanfiction. Plus they kept up the trend of focusing on a different faction in each game. The hub level was a great idea that they executed decently well, and I really liked the faction reputation stuff too.

Removing rope arrows and replacing them with Spider-Man gloves was dumb, and some of the level design felt a little dumbed down, but otherwise I really like it.

You dumb fuck don't even understand the concept of IQ.

Dying to a guard in DS for the first time and subsequently beginning a mini-quest to escape prison rather than having to load a save was one of the coolest and most surprising moment I've experienced in a game.

the sitting skeleton that throws his head is the true spooky moment of the game

It's linear as fuck. Worth playing but only for like $20.

I don't know, Thief 1 in particular has really vibrant, gaudy colors. I haven't seen much of Plague Tale but that screen doesn't look the part. It does look good though.

Deconstructionists think they're smart because they can take something apart, but they're absolutely retarded when it comes to putting anything together. Even a coherent thought.

Now you have become Yea Forums, destroyer of fun.

Reminder that Thieves' Guild is severely underrated.

I hated the first time I played Thieves Guild, but once you realize how the tunnels are connected it becomes really good.

If you play on PC there are mods to fix a lot of the console issues as well. Like the levels being broken into two, and theres one that makes the mission breifings more like the first two.
The third one is a weaker game overall than the first two imo - sorta falls into the uncanny valley of gaming eras - but still better than most games from any era.

>so you need a 200 iq to play this game?
Unironically it is not going to be a fun game if you don't have patience and problem solving skills.

Getting the best completions -- and doing the ghost runs at all -- requires almost superhuman autism to watch guard patterns (which are insanely dynamic for 1998 AI) and figure out which tools to bring and how to use them to accomplish objectives.

On the hardest settings guards notice shit like your moss arrows' moss on the ground and the fact that a window is open that wasn't open before.

Thief 1: Song of The Caverns/Return to the Cathedral
Thief 2: First City Bank and Trust
Thief 3: Overlook Mansion

Yep the art direction was pretty good.
The game took me completely by surprise, considering "literally who" devs and no prior advertising.

It is a story driven game.
But its a pretty good story with a lot of action and puzzles in between. No walking simulator or anything like that.
There are few companions who you meet along the way. All can do certain things in different situations, several types of ammunition for your slingshot (think water/fire/rope arrows in thief games).
Anyway you should try it.

I've got spooked by those undead things in Thief on the second level or something like that.
It was in 2010 and those things are so uncanny that I can't stop being spooked by the game itself

Thief 3 actually worth playing? Heard the levels are tiny because consoles.

the more you play the smoother it gets, much like Gothic actually

>the more you play the smoother it gets
Except for III.
I dont know how many time i tried to played and was immidiatly thrown off by the way the game's engine handles everything.
Microstutters, jerky animations, etc.
The engine in I+II was much better.

I bought Thief Gold and enjoyed it but between the zombie enemies/levels and just not liking first person games much I didn't finish it. Still clearly a great game and worth the dollar I spent. I'm probably just a pleb in stealth. I think I'll try Dark Messiah since I like action games and if I like that I'll play Dishonored.

Attached: 1532132089898.jpg (624x448, 54K)

Depends on what you like about Thief games.
Thief 3 has the best music and story in the series, the atmosphere is top-notch as well, however the physics and the movement aren't that good.
>Heard the levels are tiny because consoles.
I thought the levels are actually decently sized (not as big as in previous games, but they are still fine), they are just broken up into chunks separated with loading screens, but there's a mod that joins them.
I don't like it as much as TDP/TG, but it is still a wothy sequel.

Have you been born handicapped, user?

Arx Fatalis is also worth checking out if you like Thief's atmosphere.

WHICH THIEF GAME SHOULD I UNIRONICALLY GET ANONS? AND IS THERE A MOD I SHOULD DOWNLOAD TO MAKE IT LESS POOP ASS?

Dark Messiah is amazing, it's a game that's right between Arx Fatalis and the more linear modern shooters

I feel like the best thing Thief did for me was make me aware of Arkane since they seem to have made a bunch of games that are like it but more to my taste. I hope Deathloop is cool.

You might enjoy Thief 2014.

Sord, Bonehord, Return to the Cathedral, Mage Towers

Thief is unironically one of the scariest games I've ever played, and I've played a decent amount of horror games at this point.

thief 2. there is a version on piratebay with tafferpatch that is great

What FM?

1 (Gold) and 2, though maybe it's probably cheaper to get 3 as a bundle.
The instructions in pic related for T2 are somewhat out of date but by the time you're done with TG you'll know enough to figure things out.
Don't fall for the HD texture pack meme, or Enhancement pack meme, or the full TFix meme.

Most to fix compatibility issues (both Thief games were released before even Windows XP), fixes graphic issues, adds support for widescreen resolutions, and fixes a lot of issues with textures and updates some.

In other words, they keep the look of the game intact while making it widescreen and way more stable.

People who play Thief without the original default (and HD) textures are the worst.

It implements an engine patch that adds compatibility to modern OSs (although I've heard vanilla Thief works well on Windows 10) and screen resolutions, adds some grafics settings (mostly not worth using except for disabling texture filtering if you're into that), and greatly eases the engine's limits (which is more relevant for fan missions than the main games).

Dishonored is fun to fuck around with powers in but don't go expecting more than a puddle-deep universe

>Into the Maw of Chaos
>>bad levels
I understand why some people dislike T:G because of the supernatural stuff and all that, but that spooky atmosphere really makes it more unique compared to Thief 2.

I feel like the most underrated or underappreciated levels in the series are in the second game, in the form of Precious Cargo and Eavesdropping.

i liked how there was a mix of stealth maps are 'tomb raider' maps. only being stealthy through the entire game is kind of fatiguing and being able to beat on skeletons of beastmen was a nice change of pace. especially when you notice that thief has surprisingly good melee for how basic it is.

I like the idea of large levels with a ton of replayability and multiple targets per map like Hitman 2016/2018. My only concerns would be not enough maps (6 wouldn't be enough imo) and not enough variety (Castles/manors/banks can only be used so many times).

It's amazing how they managed to make these two games, that are probably my top 2 favorite video games, while having constant financial/technical issues and churning through programmers, encapsulated by the fact that they were already rushing to get T2 finished by the deadline in 2000 (as shown with Masks/Casing the Joint levels)

It's decent melee, but the game still encourages you to sneak.

Especially in a level like Escape. You can kill the Monkey Beasts, but given how overpowered they are, you have to pick on them one-by-one and try to be stealthy as possible through the level still.

Besides, playing through Thief Gold while doing Full Ghost + Full Loot is a lot of fun and a challenge, I encourage everyone here to try it.

>masterbaiter is back

Attached: 1553775042206.png (550x201, 32K)

The ONLY objectively bad level in Thief is Undercover because it's broken

Anyone else go full nuclear once you get to Escape?
t. Garrett "flash grenades in pagan parades" T. Affer

>mfw this mission
This mission is pure cancer and absolute hell to ghost through.
You can tell they threw shit on the wall with this mission and rushed through it, when the original release had 25 loot unreachable and stuck underneath the floor.

Attached: kidnap.jpg (1920x1080, 180K)

I tried my best to stealth through the first section, but when I got all the loot scattered around Constantine's Mansion upstairs I just flashbombed and ran myself towards the exit.

All of them, and the newdark engine.
For thief 3 you want the sneaky upgrade I think it's called.

I dropped the game on this level the first time I played TMA.

Attached: 1503805702825.jpg (1024x1004, 106K)

What's broken about Undercover? You just need to know how not to alert the guards before getting the Talisman, and the mission is perfectly doable.

Well if it's thief 1 garret he can bunnyhop faster than either of those dudes. But if he's up against guys with guns he's fucked

Is Thief gold the definitive way to play it?

It feels like there's a lot of specific unexplained rules you have to follow for what is and isn't acceptable behaviour to avoid being detected

you took their hammer and stuck around

Yes. With TFix. You can ignore the HD texture stuff.

Pretty much. see

You can speed around the level and no one can hear you if you're good at the game

The feedback system in Dishonored ruins it imo.

So how bad was Thi4f exactly?

This. THI4F was just grey and grimdark and looked nothing like old Thief

one cockring out of five

I'm trying to recreate the explosion effect as seen in the 'Tools of the Trade' trailer (youtube.com/watch?v=00DjTZ9cKmc). Do you people think/feel this is the right size for the explosion sprite? I'm not sure.

Attached: dump032.png (1920x1080, 433K)

stop bullying that burrick you filthy taffer

Pretty fucking bad. To the point of feeling like a insult instead of just a shitty sequel.

In French, this game would be called Voleur but the thing is: there's no French version!
Meanwhile, Dishonored 1 & 2 have full French audio and text.

It looks dated as fuck, isn't streamlined at all, gameplay is clunky and probably slow as fuck. I still have to beat the modern era Thief, which I loved when starting out, but similarly to Dishonored and Mankind Divided I just get way too hung up on doing perfect runs to really get through those games quickly. I'm surprised I ever managed to beat Human Revolution as well as some Splinter Cell and Hitman games.
Any solution for this? I like to go for perfectionist runs that are either true ghost as far as possible (don't get spotted by anyone, don't touch anything except mission objectives) or lethal takedown stealth runs. I also tend to go back and get all achievements, if possible, so overall that makes my game clear incredibly slow and my first playthrough a pain. Second and third playthroughs are often where I really take off.

I tend to prefer replaying System Shock 2 but Looking Glass really were ahead of its time, specially when it came to sound design. Even today devs still struggle.

>isn't streamlined at all
What does this even mean?
Also nobody cares about your blog.

>he actually liked nu-thief

Your opinion is trash. That game has some of the worst level design and audio mixing I've ever experienced in a game. The only decent part of it is the bank heist DLC mission.

I actually did get 2 a couple days ago and I really don't understand the first mission. Seems like literally every single threat is just a guard walking up and down a long hallway, seems impossible to knock them out or get past them without getting caught.

Game literally just wants you to knock out half the map with your blackjack.

>shitting on a game you've never played
typical no-taste, no-brain zoomer.

Am I supposed to run up to them? Seems impossible with how short some of their walk cycles are.

because all modern day gamers are retards who get off to BING BING WAHOO

You really shouldn't bother with Thief 4. Even if you ignore how much of an insult it is to the franchise, if you take it at face value, it's ungodly bad. The audio design is fucked, you'll hear a guard right next to you when they're actually on the other side of the map, different guards will say the exact same phrase at once so it looks like an amateur choir. Travelling around is incredibly linear and it's just a chore to pad out. Level transitions are fucking annoying the first time and they only get worse when you're doing it 50 times because it's the only way to get to certain parts. Quests are terrible, writing is terrible, worldbuilding is nonexistent, Garrett sounds like a cosplayer trying to do a bad batman.
But it's not so bad that it's enjoyable, like Ride to Hell. It's just badly designed and annoying at every turn. Seriously, don't bother.

Just go a different way if you're stuck. That's the beauty of Thief's level design.

Looks gud

There is no "different way". The only other way is literally a tight hallway with a guard booth that spots you instantly if you get even close.

Thief 4 is infinitely clunkier than 1 & 2.

>Hide in the shadow
>Knock them out as soon as they pass you
But it's more enjoyable if you want to leave everyone untouched, or as many as possible. Try to find alternate routes. Every level is filled with them.

Just be careful, you can crouch walk up to them mostly. It's good to get an idea of how much noise each type of floor makes.

Carpet = you can literally just run at them when their back is turned
Wood/stone = move slowly when you're close but otherwise you're ok
Marble / metal = nothing is safe except creeping forward in slow tiny increments. Use moss arrows or avoid

>Game has been out for 21 years
>Some people still didn't git gud yet
just kill yourselves already

There is a French version though, dubbed and everything.

water arrows are your friend.

Fuck Thief. It took me 4 hours to get past the Cathedral level in the first game and I make it to the final level on the second game and my save gets corrupted. WHY the fuck would I even want to purchase the third one?

Not the original, just the 2014 one.

Attached: nope.png (300x75, 16K)

>4 hours to get past the Cathedral level
but that's the fun part, finding the loot necessary to complete the level, checking every nook and cranny.

What hast thou... built, Garrett? When the time comes to review thy life, with the Master Builder afore thee, and the question is asked: what hast thou built, what will thee say, poor Garrett? For thou art a man of... destruction, not construction. Tis the biggest sin of all. Build thyself today a good house, that would please Him much!

Attached: karras.gif (256x256, 40K)

>shitting on
Sure, I pointed out how it looks and a couple of other things I can tell from watching gameplay of it, because at some point I took a serious interest in it.
I never managed to get into old entries of franchises even if I loved later games, I just hate bad graphics way too much. I couldn't bring myself to play any old Fallout games or the old Deus Ex games, even though I know how groundbreaking the latter were at the time.
I feel this is similar to people who say they love the original Star Wars or 2001, which were no doubt great achievements at the time, but are near unwatchable as a modern viewer. I respect them for what they are, but I can't force myself to enjoy them out of respect.

Is this just for playing fan missions?

*blocks your path*

>What hast thou built, user?

Attached: father karras.jpg (852x1136, 269K)

yeah, so you're a no-taste, no-brain zoomer. Why the fuck did you reply to me, cretin?

Even from the first 5 hours I spent in the game a while back I can see how everything you say is entirely true. Still, I like how there are ways to completely avoid any and all confrontation and still steal pretty much every single thing. It's what I want from a Thief game. The art design is great. Not sure if I'll ever go back and complete it, though.

> Quicksaving
Into the trash. The presence of this mechanic instantly ruins any stealth game.

It's amazing how the maps add to the storytelling and the lore in a seamless fashion.

Attached: haunted cathedral.gif (990x700, 369K)

Sorry I didn't understand you with that lisp. Maybe you need a machine to speak for you?

It's easy to steal everything because it's modern guard AI, where they'll face a wall for twenty minutes while yelling "I SURE DO HOPE NO ONE COMES UP BEHIND ME AND KNOCKS ME OUT"
In 1 and 2, there were some situations where I'd be going up to knockout/steal them when they suddenly turned around because they reached the end of the room, instead of what happens now where in between each round they'll stay still for a while.

>Brother Garret, I'm Mechanist.

Is that in Quebec? Looks sort of like it, going by the license plates.

You can also get The Dark Mod for free. It's the Thief 3 that Thief fans have been waiting for (that's already been here for years).

I still think it's stupid as fuck how I can shoot a guard in his unexposed face with an arrow, and he just takes it.

It's a stealth game, I understand, but why is Garet some kind of anemic AIDS patient? He's still a full grown man. There's no reason why he should not be able to murder a guard with a sword, if he successfully sneaks up on him.

Which makes it a little weird to call the game 'immersive'.

Can't think of a better stealth game.

If you draw the string completely an arrow will kill an unaware guard in one hit. An overhead bash with the sword will kill even haunts in one hit.

>I still think it's stupid as fuck how I can shoot a guard in his unexposed face with an arrow, and he just takes it.
but you are able to, if the guard is not alerted.

which makes your post, and you above all, pointless.

>unexposed face
Does Thief even have location-based damage?
An arrow will definitely kill an unaware guard in one hit though. It's really the awareness level that determines the lethality of a hit, not your own aiming ability.

A charged backstab from stealth will kill basically anything.

>Does Thief even have location-based damage?
you mean the location from which you fire an arrow, or location on which you hit the enemy?

Because if you fire an arrow at an unalert guard anywhere but the head, you won't kill him I'm 80% sure but I haven't played the games in a while so don't know for certain
Head is the most sensitive part of the guard, while everything else you need two hits.

I loved my short time in Thief:Gold, but I ran into a technical problem on the 3rd or 4th mission (where lockpicks are received). The game wouldn't let me save at all, error was supposedly not enough memory on a 2tb hdd. I tried making a .cfg file like steam said but it didn't work or I did it wrong. Have any of you modern fans run into this problem and solved it with a patch or similar edit?

Locational damage seems possible. There is a tutorial on TTLG for Dromed. I remember seeing a zombie lose his arm after being hit in the Thief HD mod trailer .

What do you mean "most" and "stealth games?"

The Dark Project is the best computer game of all time.

Only mongoloids disagree.

Did you download TFix? I never had any problem on any machine as long as the up-to-date patches are applied.
Aside from that, try it on another drive. Don't know how to help you otherwise.

Lost City, hands down.

>TFix Lite - modem connection? hard drive too small for the extra 100MB of resources? absolutely no interest in any tweaks, enhancements or mods? extracting this 6MB package into a full, working, complete oldDark install of T1 or TG will install NewDark and apply all the basic fixes that are required for it to work properly. unsupported, use at your own risk.
Looks like the solution to my problem, thanks friend

Just make sure you note the steps in or else the game will crash on startup.

The only Metal Gear game thot really can stand up to Thief is Snake Eater, and Thief is better because of the atmosphere and level design alone.

Clearly, you've never played Metal Gear Solid V. Heh

Google: Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Creating a Mission for Thief 2 by nicked

I don't think headshots are required at all, a fully drawn bow should kill most unaware enemies no matter where it hits. The exceptions are tough enemies like haunts and burricks but they still go down to a full backstab. I still have never noticed location mattering at all

No it doesn't, and no it won't. You can say what you want but I know how to read the fucking alertness on the UI. Don't pretend like it's difficult. The game is just not immersive whatsoever.

Friendly reminder that there's a coop netplay mod for Thief 2 now.

I really need to invest more time into Dark Mod. I just never gave it its due. Maybe I'm lazy and haven't downloaded enough missions.

Spoonman's missions are gud.

>alertness on the UI
w-what? are you thinking of a different game user

HE'S AN APEBEAST
APEBEAST
APEBEAST
APEBEAST
APEBEAST
LOOK THERE'S AN APEBEAST

holy fuck, hype

>Le Corbeau
Fucking redditors.

I really enjoyed the challenge of this game. There is virtually very little information you have to go by when infiltrating property to steal treasures, you get basic details and the rest is up to you to find a way in... Games that really required you to think.

Pirate the gog version. it's better and LGS has been dead for almost 20 years.

Are there any good custom levels for theif? Would you also recommend any graphic mods?

It's old and janky.

controls like ass
SS2 is better

>Are there any good custom levels for theif?
Tons, what kind of level you want?
>Would you also recommend any graphic mods?
No they're bad.

It has the same controls as SS2.

>So how bad was Thi4f exactly?
It has some good ideas. But it is a severely muddled game with clear production issues. The plot is incoherent nonsense with an ending that feels assembled from cut pieces of early drafts of the game. I think it's worth playing overall, though. It's not a bad game overall. The stealth design is decent, albeit overforgiving. To be honest, a lot of its design issues are shared by Human Revolution. It's just that Thief fans were more sensitive to the formula and why it worked. Human Revolution absolutely butchered the stealth design from Deus Ex, but fewer people noticed that.

Thief 4 is excellent once you tweak some of the UI and settings anybody who thinks otherwise is a pleb

Also, even though its like 5 years old now it still has some of the best lighting ever. Game is beautiful

Here's something to get you started. Also check out the 20th anniversary contest missions:

yup

It made people like Thief 3, that is how bad it was.

....why are you moving your mouse? You know this is not your head, right? You are moving your hand... to simulate... your head? are you sane?

Anyone making a map for the 20th anniversary contest of Metal Age? I hope we get just as many maps as the first contest.

Of all the shit stealth games you picked the very worst of them all? Good bait.

People always liked Thief 3.

Not him but nope

Basically the only people who didn't like Thief 3 were the purists who didn't like Invisible War, either.

I hope you're not implying that was a minority of people or something
Thief 3 was just as shit on as anything until muh Shalebridge Cradle meme finally caught on after years of being forced

>I hope you're not implying that was a minority of people or something
It was a vocal minority. No different to the Crysis fans who hated Crysis 2.

whatever zoomer, it doesn't even matter anymore. Enjoy your revisionism. Thief 3 is still fantastically mediocre.

>whatever zoomer, it doesn't even matter anymore.
I'd argue that in Thief 3's case, the game was always liked, and over the years it has become even more liked because mods have addressed design issues and technical limitations in the original version. if Deus Ex: Invisible War had shipped an SDK, we would have seen a similar trend.

>not The House of the Widow Moira

too spooky for me, I already own the first two
if it weren't for those fucking spiders, I would actually attempt to beat them

That's why you can customize everything, you foul nigger.

Looking Glass Studios deserved a better fate.
