The puns were added by the localization team. Japan just has the same generic one for every character. Mega Man's trailer was probably done before they got that idea.

It's nice to see people enjoying these puns when the Japanese version is just always the same standard phrase.
People usually bemoan it when Treehouse adds puns and jokes in the localization that weren't there at all in the original.

Because usually the localization is killing original content in a game to make their little bullshit, sometimes ruining the original meaning. This one had nothing but "joins the battle" over and over, basically nothing, in this context its fine to "spice it up" with some western flavor.

No. You can see it in the Japanese Miis in the OP. Literally all of them just say "joins the battle" like Mega Man, Chrom, and Dark Samus.

Ryu's technically works on a meta level because he is literally a new fighter/challenger. The phrase is being used for its exact intended purpose, not so much as a reference. I wouldn't call that a "pun" but you could reasonably call it a meta joke.
