I got the switch version from the sale last week. I never played the steam version but I know it’s the basis of this and other modern ports. I also know it’s a modified version of the 1997 PC game which I have played before. That game was rather shitty in a lot of ways but the music and sound was the worst. I was surprised that the Switch version didn’t have this problem. They’ve sampled all the music and sound from the PSX version, it sounds identical to the original. They’ve tweaked all the flaws to match the PSX version. The backgrounds and videos are filtered and not pixelated which isn’t a bad thing here, but I know some people like the pixelated look. Resolution is much higher which is most noticeable in battle and texture have also been smoothed which I also consider a bonus. There is also perspective correction.
IMO this is the definitive version for me. I’ve considered it unplayable and dated for years but I found myself enjoying it on the switch. I tried it on mobile a little while back but hated it. Here it’s quite fine though even if the same game.
Probably mostly the opening seeing as actually trying to render all those details of Midgar at once in real-time isn't very feasible for the detail poured into it.
