Can we have a comfy Metroid thread?
I want to discuss the series as a whole but also Prime 2 specifically as I replayed it recently for the first time in years.

You can't start a metroid thread with an image like that. You're just going to attract him
I've never played a Metroid game before but I'm interested in the series. Is there a recommended playing order or should I just go by release date?
I always say to try Super or Prime 1 and go from there.

I feel like I'm literally starving for a new Metroid game. Particularly because I'm one of those few autists who actually give a shit about the story and want to see where the hell it's going to go after Fusion with Samus having Metroid DNA and being a fugitive from the Federation.
Replayed through Super Metroid recently, still as good as I remember though apparently I am not, I found myself dying a lot more often than I did when I was younger. I need to replay the Prime Trilogy though to get hyped up for 4, I hope it manages to maintain the same quality as 1 and 2.
Zero Mission is canonically the first game and also the easiest to pick up and play. After that Prime is next in the timeline, but just play Samus Returns or Super.
Metroid: Zero Mission for the GBA is your single best possible starter, it's a very solid remake of the first game. Super Metroid is better but I think you lose out on a bit of the experience by not playing the first game first.
These are the definitive side-scrolling Metroids. Metroid Prime is also extremely good but as a FPS I don't think it's the best representation of what to expect from Metroid as a whole, though it is also something completely worthwhile trying out first if you're looking for something different. Keeps the same atmosphere, exploration themes just from a different perspective.
Hello ACfag. I'm saying this early in advance.
Prime 2 is alright, but I do feel like it's a noticeable step down from Prime 1 in terms of design and polish. It's a usual case of a sequel trying to outdo the original by being bigger and weirder and inadvertently losing some of the better qualities of the original by doing so. Beam ammo shouldn't have been a thing. The temple key hunt near the end was tedious. Some of the environments were labyrinthine enough to make me want fast travel in the game. It's still cool, but a bit cumbersome at times.
