Played through a few levels or borderlands 2 and its kinda boring. Maybe its fun playing with friends but i dont have those

2 is the best out of both.
If you really want to, just play The Pre-Sequel once for the story, then forget about it.
It gets a bit too grindy for my taste, but thankfully PC has stuff like Gibbed's Save Editor so you can just get the gear you want and get going.

Are the games strongly connected? I've never played the first one, and that collection consists only of the second and some prequel. Will I be lost if I start with Borderlands 2 without playing the first one?

Not really. The second game gives you just about enough of a summary on the events of the first, but if you need one, basically: 4 guys show up to a planet with the promise of finding loot in something called the Vault, but are tricked to face a discount Gene Worm that comes out of it.
