This got a lot of press coverage and a shitload of support from people who then went and watchted her new Tropes vs. Video Games video, Women as Background decorationg (the infamous one with the Hitman Absolution footage that people are still arguing about to this day.) The reaction was mixed, but many who disagreed with the some of the contents of it still found themselves sporting her just in the face of the torrent of online abuse she was facing.

There was only one problem. Blow up the image. Look at the times these tweets were sent. 3 minutes ago, 2 minutes. Last one from 12 fucking seconds ago. Okay, well they were sent to the official femfeq account, Maybe she saw them coming into her feed live and immediately screenshoted them and reported them. But look to the side, she's logged off. And Twitter refreshed their timer on tweets in like the space of 22 seconds. How the fuck did she get these.

And the account's clearly a burner, all tweets are new and all are directed at Anita. And isn't Kevin Dobson just the most typical white guy name possible. Now by this point uncle /pol/ had for better or worse become the face of GG discussion, when it was still kinda the the Zoe/Grayson thing. During this time a lot of weird shit was happening and was being blamed on Yea Forums. People were getting hacked/doxxed/all that nasty stuff and people Yea Forums (oddily enough, specifically the Yea Forums board, or Yea Forums lo) were also posting about it happening on Yea Forums before it happened. The problem, Yea Forums felt it was being framed. For instance when Zoe's tumblr and twitter were hacked and she was doxxed someone posted an e-mail adress on 'v' and said that they've hacked Zoe and anything you sent to him/her they'd post. Yea Forums found this suspicious and felt they were being framed and that most likely, due to various other suspicious circumstances around that, that Zoe likely was doing it to herself for attention, but that's almost another story. Same thing with Phil Fish (which always made it odd to me that gg was seen as being misogynistic, unless Fish was always a girl) although I think the hack of him turned out to be unquestionably real at least.

As a result /pol/ was in full Alex Jones, hunkered down conspiracy mode, and came to the conclusion that Anita/one of her associates (likely McIntosh) had sent these to Anita herself, Anita would then post them and the tweets would be immediately deleted. This was presumably done in order to get her name in the press as her Tropes series was experiencing a lull in rating and to get her face associated with the wave of harrasement that was apparently sweeping the video game community. It's not a hard theory to buy into, that Women as Background Detail video is the single highest viewed video on her channel. And the support she got through Patreon/Kickstarter was immense. And then a key part of the GG story as it passed from happening into internet lore was the story of how Anita threats to herself and was caught doing it, making all other threats toward her suspect.

But, of course, it's Yea Forums. Anyone can post anything and there is often a diversity of opinion, if said in the least-PC way possible. Some people even seem fairly supportive of the idea of the series. However while this thread was going on a glut of apparently sexist and harassing comments suddenly bombarded the kickstarter page. And then her Wikipedia page was vandalised, I think there was more but I can't remember it off the top of my head.

But then this became a huge news story. I remember first hearing about it from Jim Sterling, who I think was one of the first ones to cover it, but it ended up blowing up. Real news sites, not just gaming ones, were covering this hideous harassment this poor woman had received. This lead to a massive outpouring of public sympathy and her kickstarter becoming a monster susses raising over $200,000 for femfreq and the eye's of the world on Anita. Many were dissapointed with the final results in the end and there were also rumours for a long time that it was a scam and that she'd taken the money and run. This was really because she took fucking ages to get a single video out and after that her video output incredibly slow and rather minimal. I mean, it took her from 2012 to 2017 to make the amount of content someone like superbunnyhop makes in 4 months.

Also, I don't have any screenshots of the harassing comments from her kickstarter as they were almost immediately disabled along with comments on all her other videos so heres an image from Tetsuo 2.'

The problem was the thread I posted. The reason why Anita had gained Yea Forums's attention was because someone was trying to gain Yea Forums's attention. Now it looks like Anita from a distance, but if you read the thread I posted carefully this person claims not to be Anita. Of course they could be lying. Problem is that this all does look suspicious and given what happened with Zoe and later Brianna, many people on the GG side of the fence refused to give her the benefit of the doubt. Plus GG quickly spiralled into culture-war/anti-feminism nonsense once it got properly started. Part of it was due to Anita becoming the face of harassment in gaming right as GG was coined because her mug was put as header image in loads of those 'gamers are dead/over' articles. In making Anita the focus it caused much of the backlash against Anita to become part of the GG thing (the initial Zoe thing was actually different and still a complete clusterfuck of strangeness) and much of that included the growing anti-feminist movement, the skeptics, MRAs, Davis Aurini and more, and while none of those are necessarily misogynistic (other than 'all women are whores" Aurini) there is a cross-over between those groups and the the people who send random feminists rape threats on twitter.

I think one of the biggest problems (and feminists would say this is victim-blaming but I don't give a fuck) was Anita's position on the internet itself. There are no comments on her videos, no feedback via her twitter, when doing a public appearance questions have to be vetted beforehand.

...This was theorised by many on the GG side as being proof that she was hiding from criticism and that she never would answer a straight question because it might expose her. But really I think she might have just insulated herself from everything that was being said about her, meaning that the only shit that managed to actually get through to her were the threats and the praise from the press.

That being said I do think Jonathan McIntosh may have been part of it. Ever since he left about halfway through the Women vs Games series, Anita's views have been going down. And you after he left you heard less and less from the press or her own twitter about her harassement. Now she only gets a little over a 1000 views per vid. I think he was likely very crucial in making the threats and trolling a key part of the story and maybe was the one who knew how to monetise it.

That all being said Anita did face real threats and harassment on top of all this. While GGers will claim that the FBI found no credible threats were sent it still sucks being the most hated woman on the internet and having to cancel gigs before the organisers can figure out whether this bomb threats legit or not. And unlike Zoe or Brianna where it's clear that they're lying/deranged about everything, I think Anita might have just been in a bubble and unaware that what she was doing looked like a false flag.

But it was the Zoe scandal that created GG and there's reason why the places that are left discussing it all sound so deranged and almost Alex Jones-like, With Zoe what was reported in the press (and eventually recorded into history as the truth on wikipedia) and what was actually happening were two different universes entirely.

Read my next post: I argue that it's possible that Anita is just a dummy where it comes to the internet and didn't know how it looked/was possibly a Machiavellian genius who was able to turn harassment into profit. I would argue that her current view count tends to imply to former rather than the later but who knows. Again I really get the feeling that if anyone was intentionally trying to rile up the internet it was probably McIntosh.

As there is no concrete evidence that Anita harassed/invited harassment upon herself it made the GG discussion that much harder. Early on many people who weren't aware of what was actually going on dismissed the Zoe stuff as bonkers conspiracy/route misogyny hiding behind 'ethics in journalism' as an excuse. The truth was far different in that case, but due to the nature of memes, internet lore and rumour, and the fact that not outlet (including Breitbart) reported on it properly, the GG version of history also became warped and fictionalised. But when the Zoe thing was going on we had fairly good evidence of wrong-doing, corruption, mental illness, and general insanity. When focus shifted to Anita, right as GG was being coined and turning into the stupid circle-jerk it still is to this day, we had nothing definitive. We had a suspicious tweet and a weird Yea Forums thread from 2 years ago. And due to her trolling becoming such a huge news story for so many years, it automatically attracted more trolls to harass her, because who knows, their rape threat might get on tv.

The big reason why GG took off in Yea Forums was because the mods did the dumbest fucking thing they could've done. They censored and deleted discussion about Zoe. And as a result of this, threads about this got made in /pol/ and it got THEIR attention because it was apparent that censorship was happening in the site. That's the Streisand effect for ya.

Plus certain figures like Milo only posted pictures of the syringes he'd recieved in the mail. By the time he called the police he'd apparently thrown them out which arguably leads to some suspicion on his part. On the other hand it was more convincing than Zoe fleeing he home because people on the internet were being mean to her.

The problem is that Anita got lumped in with Zoe and Wu and in many circles became almost interchangeable with one another, with their worst aspects creating a kind of hyper-feminist/crybully/mentally ill/master manipulator, while the other side combined them together to create a kind of internet feminist martyr whose only crime was being a woman on the internet. Both of these takes were and are nonsense, but in the case of Zoe there's definitely some truth to it. With Wu it's easier if you just realise that she's fucking insane. But with Anita I genuinely think that she might have been kinda innocent if a bit stupid were it came to the internet. Part of it's her own damn fault but GG's focus on her means any discussion of it usually focuses on Anita and why she was this feminist youtuber was so horribly harassed by the gaming community for being a woman, sending rape threats under some excuse of it being about ethics.
