wii tapped on the non gamer market with wii sports and wii fit. much like ps2 did with the dvd player thing. the difference is that ps2 had thousands of good games while wii's good exclusives you can count with 1 hand.

N64 had a good (but smaller) library but this. ps1 had a fantastic price point and the games were cheaper due to disk. For the price of 2 N64 games you could get like 3 PS1 games. That adds up.

How does that disqualify it from winning that particular gen? If it's exclusive quality rather than sales, then 360 won that gen and the N64 arguably won its gen.

unlike most companies, nintendo only makes a game when theres a good reason to, like to bring it to a new platform or if theres just too many creative ideas for the series. despite how many games their IPs get, most of them end up being pretty unique experiences, unlike series like crash, ratchet & clank, halo, uncharted, etc. where each game feels way too similar to the last but with a few minor changes.

Nowhere near as much of a "computer in a box" as modern consoles. Used PowerPC which no actual PCs used at that point except Apple. And didn't even have an actual operating system other than an extremely barebones interface to mange system clock and save data.

Xbox 360 might arguably edge it out since XBL at least for the time was better than PSN and Xbox did have the superior 3rd party support and the more hyped up exclusive games in regards to Halo and Gears at least which both played heavily to the strengths of XBL. Also Xbox had a ton of timed exclusives early in the consoles life cycle that made it look much more appealing at least for the time.

As for the Wii it was its own beast. Probably too much of a love it or hate it console with so much casualization that it influenced the other two to adopt similar strategies for their systems. The one good thing PS3 did have in its favor is free online but its exclusive games did not match up with Xbox's best. Biggest Xbox negative was the RROD and it was a huge negative. Without that I think Xbox 360 probably definitely would edge out PS3 even with being forced to have to pay for online.

Xbox is basically handing the "powerhouse console" market over to ps5 by giving up on xbox and focusing on pc, nintendo has it's own niche in which it's very successful. So it's a tossup between those two. I think switch might have more staying power throughout the gen with revisions i'm SURE they'll release, but ps5 will probably be the go-to for your average joe as a media center setpiece. That is incorrect. At the end of 1994 (when 5th gen launched), Sega had a higher global total. Nintendo clawed back the lead at the end of 1995 I believe and then raised the distance over 1996 and 1997.

360 was some scam shit. The failure rate of that system combined with "elite" versions that came later that had the same damn defects, a lot of people ended buying two or more 360's over the course of that generation. But I guess the games were good enough for people to pony up for replacements.

the 360 was such an amazing console for all sorts of genres and the graphics hardware it had really let developers do wonders with the hardware. it kinda makes me sad to see how far they've fallen. you now realise that splinter cell, mass effect, dead rising, saints row, kotor, jade empire, dead or alive, ninja gaiden, ace combat, tenchu and many more franchises were xbox exclusive at one point. i really hope they invest in 3rd party exclusives rather than solely relying on 1st party devs like ninja theory and obsidian.

In 40 years, when those phones have the high-bandwidth wireless capability to stream 4k picture and controller input flawlessly (which is harder than it sounds) and as much power as a real PC, I have no doubt consoles will be obsolete. People will just connect their phones to their TVs. But they're no where near that point yet.

Switch wins this gen. Longevity of the 3ds on more capable hardware. Releasing quality games rather than cash grabs. Sure, some of it is gimmicky like single joycons.

But as long as Nintendo is the only company churning out exclusives in a bug-free, polished state, they will win. Sure the kiddies might want the PS4 or xbone to play CoD and Fortnite, but anyone looking for quality games will be playing the Switch.
