This, I keep hearing about this autochess thing and how people are copying autochess but I have no fucking idea what it is.

It's pretty much tower defense from the gameplay I've seen, using the term "chess" is just to make it seem more strategic than it is

It's played on a chess board but it's alot like poker. Think of it like poker but the cards/pieces are animated and fight on a chessboard, there is more to it but that's the gist.

Because you put units on a grid board, and "auto" because the units have simple AI based on their position and what's near them so you place them based on that and they automatically fight in the combat steps

you choose from a selection of random units every round. you buy units with gold. you get gold every round. units are level 1 to 3. you only buy level1. 3 level 1 makes a level 2. 3 level 2 makes a level 3. to get a level 3 you need to luck out and get a total of 9 of a unit. units have passive abilities that play off of eachother and autocast mana abilities. synergies. you choose where to place your units. they move and attack on their own each round. they all revive at the end of each round.

so its basically a game that is entirely based off setup? basically like a card game but with less depth?

autochess showed up on DotA2 a year ago and chinks play only that mod. Valve, Epic and other companies decided that instead of sitting on DotA and doing nothing and miss out on income like Blizzard did they instantly went in and cannibalized the concept to make a commercial game

I think it's more about the addictiveness of being a slot machine with a payoff than it is about casualization. You roll for items, you roll for heroes, you roll for opponents and their rolls.

From what I heard, auto chess is a ripoff of another dota mod called pokemon defense or something

Its p simple, each turn you buy or combine pieces trying to get specific synergies. You win money and get items, which you can give to your pieces to make them stronger. Its called autochess because combat is automated, pieces will use their skills on their own when they get full mana, you decide the placement.

If you absolutely HAVE to compare it to some other genre, its similar to card games, except you dont have to buy booster packs or any of that shit. Its fun.

Be glad you aren't. It's designed to suck the money right out of you, once they figure out how to monetize it.

You can take steps to minimize the negative impact of rng in your game.
- not depending on a specific piece roll
- keeping synergy options open
- going on a loss streak
- constantly scouting enemy boards and going for unused synergies
