It's an archaic kanji pronounced "o-re" that means "you". All the kanji came from classical Chinese, but the hard ones were phased out over time since there are simpler ones that convey the same thing.

Only eroge. I swore off 3DPD a few years earlier and was NEET, so I pretty quickly went through all the translated nukige and all the translations that came out on exhentai each day, so I had many hours each day with nothing to do but play untranslated nukige and eroge.

Nukige are great for this because they're like 1/3 plot and 2/3 easy repetitive porn, so it's a good work/reward balance. You'll spend about 3/4 of your time trying to understand the plot and looking up kanji, then have a nice fap on the next sex scene, and then you'll see the same kanji over and over until you don't need to keep looking them up. You'll also get used to the grammar that way, too (there were a few parts of japanese grammar that my year of classes didn't teach me that I eventually figured out playing nukige).

These days I easily play all newly released nukige, only rarely looking up kanji, and I can read almost all untranslated hentai manga and doujin. The main thing I have trouble with is names. I would push my way up to light novels but I haven't worked my way through my backlog of translated LN yet, so I lack motivation.

Just play literally anything. No matter what you're fucked at the beginning, but every single thing you learn makes the next day easier. You've just gotta keep plugging away at it, studying shit and picking up words, whether they're useful or useless.

If you can commit to "learning" 20 new words a day for 6 months, you will amass a vocabulary that, while not enough to play that much of anything, will enable you to have a good time learning through continued play.

Gotta learn those 戦う's 使う's and 逃げる's before you can learn shit like 法廷侮辱罪

The story is that I got accepted to a PhD course at one of the better national universities. Will look for a job here after I graduate.

Chiitrans usually picked it up from the VN so I could copy and paste. I did some hentai CG translation for a while where I did what you described, using the radical finder, and that was really annoying but I never did figure out anything better. Supposedly a real jisho and using the radical system works well enough, but I never learned out to use it properly.

Over time you get better at recognizing the radicals and searching, but it can still be tricky. Also, be careful: mangaka and CG artists like to use uncommon kanji sometimes, so you'll spend an inordinate amount of time looking up an uncommon kanji only to find it's something ridiculous, like "naru" or "aru" that are normally just spelled out in hiragana.

1. You're pretty young
2. You have literally nothing but free time
3. You're actually supplementing this kind of shit with actual studying using actual material and not meme programs like Rosetta Stone.

Jap is probably the next hardest language in the world to Arabic or some other sandnigger squiggle language, it takes a ridiculous amount of dedication for a baka gaijin (even more so if you're 30 years old and\or a wageslave) to become even as literate as a 13 years old Japanese kid. And for what? To play some obscure 6/10 game?

Hmmm, it's tough because a lot of the stuff I played years ago wound up getting translated. Kyonyuu Kazoku Saimin was a pretty good nukige that's still not translated, and I really enjoyed Rankou!! vndb.org/v18951 but that only ever got a French translation.

Rankou!! is pretty underrated in my opinion, since it really nails the moral degeneration theme, monster rape, fantasy setting, and use of virtual reality porn games as a plot device. The art and voice acting are tolerable, considering it's an Appetite game. Definitely worth whatever they're charging for it.

Because subject object verb rather than subject verb object? It's not that big a change, and the particles make it explicit which in my opinion is a step up in ease from english where you just have to know the words.

There's a few things in there with clauses, adjectives, and adverbs but it's not hard to puzzle out if you understand the particles and basic sentence structure. Plus, spoken japanese makes it extremely clear (at least, to me) what's going on in the sentence based on stressed words and pauses between different clauses in the sentence.

Problem with Japanese, and Chinese really, is the fact you have to straight memorize a FUCKTON of symbols that are alien to you. In practice it means you really need to be exposed to the language at all times for it to seep in slowly and most people are really on basic fluent level. Trying to speak Japanese to a native who actually went to college for that shit will make you realize just how basic commonplace spoken Japanese is. Koreans' Hangul is really the only alphabet where some semblance of order and reason was put into and didn't build upon layers and layers of shit.

Are you advanced in Japanese? As a beginner I have issues with it because it's very difficult to tell what's modifying what or what things may be omitted in what scenario, so that for a complicated sentence, it's hard to be certain what's being said, or which one of several meanings is used for a particle or grammar aspect, and so on. This stuff is all 100% alien to me as an English native, but perhaps if you're not an English native, you may have had similar difficulties learning that and so Japanese isn't so bad by comparison.

The advantage of hangul is how easy it is to learn. The downside is that it doesn't carry much information.

I don't know about advanced. Keep in mind I took a year of classes before I started studying on my own, and I'd say about 2/3 of that was studying the grammar and grinding it until it became second nature. I do still look up particles from time to time, and there's a few phrases that don't make it into textbooks for whatever reason but are fairly common in the vernacular.

The more exposure you get, the easier it gets. It's a struggle at first because everything's new and you're struggling on every sentence, but eventually you get used to it and don't need to look up nearly as much. If you're really struggling with grammar, I'd buy multiple beginner/intermediate textbooks and go through them since none of them cover everything 100%, and then get one or two advanced textbooks for the really fancy grammar.

The more of it you see, the easier it gets.
What will frustrate you much more is, when the language actually starts making sense, just not when you try to force it back into English.

Learn it the natural way: by speaking, then learning to write and read what you can speak. So basically watch a lot of anime, weeb out on a few phrases, then try to learn more words. Then learn to string together simple sentences (all while learning to write out what you can say), and then move up to more complicated sentences.

Learning kanji without knowing the meaning behind them or how to read them is a huge waste of time and will discourage you.

There's literally no age cap on learning a new language, no matter what it is. The main problem is people don't immerse themselves into the language (either by moving to where it's the primary spoken language or by consuming massive amounts of media in that langauge) so they never progress beyond a few simple phrases and memorizing individual words. Especially older people who have more demands on their time and social responsibilities.

I haven't gotten to that yet, I'm only just starting grammar now that I can reliably read hiragana and katakana.

There's nothing easier about Chinese grammar.
It's just English is just as retarded as Chinese, so for an English speaker, the system used by Japanese (and Korean, Finnish, Hindu, Malayan,...) is hard because it's different.
All Chinese languages are analytical, so is English (albeit not purely).
Japanese is agglutinative. For most learners, that makes it easier to learn than English. Not so for the English.

It's because people SPEAK languages before they're written down. The reading for each of those compound kanji came before the kanji. When japanese adopted kanji from china, they were pretty loose with how they used them, so some of them were used more than once, a lot of the really complicated ones were dropped entirely, and they were replaced with more common kanji and they just changed how to read it.

This is why you should learn to speak and understand spoken words first, then learn how to read and write them. It's way easier, first of all, to memorize the vocabulary that way, and second you won't get tripped up as bad when learning to write. Reading is trickier but the trick with learning to read is just to read a lot and eventually you pick up all the patterns and remember all the weird exceptions.

Majority of compound words are Chinese vocabulary and came with the kanji themselves. 行動 is a Chinese word through and through.

Kanji is a fantastic tool for the way the language works. It's not perfect, but it works very well. Japanese is a bit worse than Chinese as the radicals which are supposed to tell you how to pronounce stuff in Japanese don't actually do that properly in enough cases that it's not worth learning them. But the way words are formed mimics the way sentences are and it's quite intuitive in that way.

That being said, there were large movements that wanted to reform radically, or even more radically adopt English or French during the 19th century because there are a lot of limitations.

I started by using realkana.com for Hiragana and Katakana, they also have an app. Learned both of them in a week and now I'm learning Kanji - knowing about 80 so far plus 200 vocabulary words. WaniKani.com is a great resource but it costs money - there is an Anki deck floating around though. It's really not that hard.

It's well studied linguistics m8. Your brain looks for the things it knows about if it can find enough of it. People trying to learn languages from the indian subcontinent stop hearing the differences between 2 different kinds of popping sound (they have a proper name, I forget it) if they can find enough of their native language.

I've considered it, but I'm currently trying to learn korean and while I know the grammar between korean and Japanese is basically identical, I worry that is my foundation in korean isn't strong enough then I risk just making myself more likely to confuse the two languages.
Once my korean is better and at least at lower-intermediate level it might be fun to see if I can then learn korean -> japanese.

There are some advantages to the micrograms though, mainly that they contain the meaning of a word rather than just the Pronounciation.
That, in theory, means that two countries could have vastly different speaking languages, but if they still used the same Chinese characters to represent all of their words then their written communication would still be able to be understood by each other.
Unfortunately it doesn't quite go that way for Japanese kanji because the japs pretty much reinvented them for their own words.

Not saying japanese is a particularly good system, I think kanji is one of the worst written systems there are, but written english is at the very last as bad. There's zero fucking consistency with how letters when placed in certain orders what sounds, silent letters are THE most retarded idea in regards to written language, and lol lets just steal words from other languages and keep their pronunciation but also keep their spelling and now you have to fucking understand spelling in other languages for this one fucking word. We do use tonal features to alter the meaning, e.g. an upwards inflection at the end of a statement can turn it into a question, but to my knowledge we don't do it quite as badly as the Chinese where a single word can have vastly different meanings depending on the inflection you place on it.

Chinese languages are contour tonal. They also raise inflection to indicate questions and such, the difference is that they notice the way the height of the voice changes for each syllable.
Japanese is register tonal or pitch-accent based. Essentially this creates a two-tone system where every utterance is either a high tone or a low tone. It's not an accented system because accent can only affect a single syllable. It's not a tonal language because it doesn't follow one rulle in the definition of tonal languages I forgot.
English, in contrast to both of these, is an accented languge. Every single word has a syllable upon which the accent is placed.

Took a month off after a solid 5 months of study. Minna No Nihongo 2 doesn't fuck around, so I've been slowly getting back into things. It's amazing how much I can comprehend now though.

Nah, a year or two back there was one of those chink sites that had a trial you could abuse for about a year straight to watch literally anything you wanted on 60+ channels, with a week's worth of on-demand, but these days there's nothing.

It's a shame, it was a fun way to find new shows. Now I just watch new releases every week or so.
