Space Invaders still holds up and it was revolutionary for the time. The guy behind it had to make a custom board to make his vision for the game a reality if I recall the story correctly, and as such it was the first game to do a lot of things, including background music (the 4 note loop, but it was still completely undone beforehand).

I'm also realizing that outside of the original (and recreations of it), Extreme, and the first couple levels of Get Even, I haven't played many games in the Space Invaders series.

Yes, but Wizardry, Zork, Sorcery, Trek, Beneath Apple Manor, Wumpus and Adventure are all much more fun games

I won't disagree because I haven't played most. Adventure (the genre) games and RPGs generally aren't my thing. Probably why I'm most drawn to one of the grandaddies of shmups (along with Asteroids) and the first game to technically have an OST from that time period. Adventure is a nice little game though, definitely one of the best 2600 games.
