Is this worth playing? I haven't touched the Halo series at all.
Halo Wars
do you like RTS games?
if yes, then uhh.. No, not really.
It's a console RTS nigger what do you think?
It's pretty much only catering to Halo fans, and even then I'd just watch the cutscene movie on youtube.
it's the best rts ever made for consoles I'll give it that. the story isn't really directly tied to the rest of the halo series so you don't have to worry about not knowing plot. overall it's pretty ok-good if you like the genre, but like first poster says. if you don't like rts then stay away
It's very RTS-lite.
The 360 is weakshit hardware and the game suffered from it. I also read somewhere that the dev wanted to make it as complex as a PC RTS within the contraints of what gamepad control allowed, but Microsoft forced them to simplify it in order to make it extremely accessible to all audiences.
That said, the design, soundtrack and overall gameplay are fine for a playthrough at least. Lots of Ensemble Studios veterans worked on it. You'll enjoy it more if you're into Halo lore. As a sci-fi RTS, there's way better options out there on PC, old and new.
Yes.
Its okay. But if you are looking for the best of the genre, thats not here. There are 3 really great RTS games though. No more than that. They are
>Company of Heroes 1
>Age of Empires 2
>Age of Mythology
Thats it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.
Looking back on it it's a bit difficult to recommend. It's a console RTS, and pretty well-made control-wise despite this.
However balance probably wasn't considered despite the game leaning toward being multiplayer focused since AIs in these type of games are just mediocre without being given the equivalence of hacks. In terms of balance, well, each commander really only has one viable strategy each.
Still had fun though, kinda wish I hit the General rank on 360 but I didn't git gud enough to look up guides on how to cheese ranking with Commander Forge.
It's barely an RTS and sucks as one compared to even WarCraft 1 or C&C 1.
>No Homeworld
>No Dune 2
>No old school C&C
It's great and the sequel is better, though a lot of the appeal comes from how well the games translate the Halo feel into an RTS.
Great entry level RTS, if you're a veteran of the genre I doubt you'll get much challenge out of it though
The Flood sections are the least enjoyable ones in the game, but it's a fun RTS albeit an easy one. It's also amazing to call in an ODST drop pod.
What about Halo wars 2? Isn't it an upgraded version?
maximum comfy if you're a boomer, ignore HaloWars 2 though.
It's the sequel. The one actually good thing 343 has done so far.
>ignore HaloWars 2
Why?

REAL TALK
If I loved HaaH WaaW 1 should I get 2 when it goes on sale?
Halo Wars 1 focuses on army composition, managing attack and defense simultaneously, and using the terrain to your advantage.
Halo Wars 2 is 90% APM and meta abuse.
It's more complicated than the first one, but it's a lot of fun. I played a lot of Halo Wars 1 back in the day, and Haah Waah 2 has been my favorite game in the past five years. But it's still a niche game in a Halo skin.
>APM
Wat?
Actions per minute. How fast you're physically micro-managing your units. It's a test of autism.
See: Starcraft
OH FUCK
So HaaH WaaW 2 requires one to find gud and get it?
How steep is the learning curve and how bad does the AI cheat on harder difficulties?
>Halo Wars 1 focuses on army composition
You mean Anders monohog into Spartan tanks and Arby banshees right. You don't even need to build a single unit beside the arbiter in 2v2 games. And microing actually mattering isn't a bad thing. It's hard for me to go back playing Halo Wars 1 seriously because you have such less control of units in engagements. Haah Waah 2 strikes a nice balance with that.
The AI doesn't have a scaling difficulty like the first one so the difficulty caps out earlier.
APM shitfest with abilities that can kill half or entire armies.
Also poor balance.
Dont play it.
>How steep is the learning curve
It literally comes down to reading the most recent reddit meta guide and how fast you can click. Seriously. Even the maps don't really matter. They're all excessively flat and special buildings from the first game are gone.
>how bad does the AI cheat on harder difficulties?
Pretty bad. I think each hero literally has different ways of cheating - i.e. different build speeds, credit gain, and unit health.
>You mean Anders monohog into Spartan tanks and Arby banshees right.
You can do single-unit armies in any game. Warthogs and the like are just effective because of how well they shoot while moving.
>You don't even need to build a single unit beside the arbiter in 2v2 games.
Sure, if the other team is shit.
>And microing actually mattering isn't a bad thing.
There's a difference between microing being an option and that literally being most of the game.
>Sure, if the other team is shit.
That's the meta in high tier 2v2 play. Building units is actually detrimental vs funding your rage.
>There's a difference between microing being an option and that literally being most of the game.
There is a difference, and Halo Wars 2 isn't that. That's Starcraft. Halo Wars 2 is much simpler in micro compared to that. For comparison the absolute best Halo Wars 2 players play with a controller, and are probably best defined by their macroplay.
Also what the fuck nigga.
>maps are flat
You call this flat? The flattest map in the game is a remake of a Halo Wars 1 map.
>I think each hero literally has different ways of cheating - i.e. different build speeds, credit gain, and unit health.
You mean the leader powers EVERY leader has that makes them unique? Cutter has fast infantry, Forge has better eco, etc. That applies to humans and AI. The worst the AI does is have godlike splits vs leader powers on legendary difficulty.
