Lootboxes are never ok if they are paid for. If you are going to include microtransactions in your game, then you should allow players directly pay for the items they want instead of throwing money at a slim to nil chance at getting it. Adjust your prices accordingly for the quality of the item and the effort it took to create it (common vs legendary skins in Overwatch, for example).

They can shit out a loot table's worth of garbage items that take no effort, pepper in maybe a small handful of things players are actually going to want, give the desired items low odds and then that's it. It's a model that forces players to continue throwing in money not TO get what they actually want but UNTIL the can get what they actually want. For all but the luckiest of people, that means they're going to be at it for a long while and the devs won't have to lift a finger until the majority of paying players finally have everything they want, which isn't going to happen quickly.

If we've learned something from these threads is the fact that the majority of Yea Forums plays nothing but the kind of garbage that has lootboxes and the like as gameplay mechanics.

I think Overwatch lootboxes are the "least worst" of all of them, they give you a lot of them and it's JUST cosmetic items, there is no real player progression if not for cosmetics and everything else is unlocked from the start. it's a completely optional thing that you also get tons just from playing the game
